The irony of this business is my wife really liked the first guy who came out about a year ago to do some work. Though he was not very friendly at all he was competent and reliable. I thought he charged quite a bit but have not had to use an electrician for a while. Recently we needed some work so we called them but did not get the same gentleman we used in the past. Instead I got the owner (Joe) on the line. He said he happened to be just up the road so could swing by to take a look. I interpreted this as a friendly (no charge) drop in since he was down the street. He looked at the problem spending about 20 minutes and he also helped me take a look at a project we were doing in our garage. He was not able to fix the issue we needed fixed but said he would send someone out the next day. He was very friendly when he came out so did not expect any issues. The next day a young guy came out, was very nice and immediately found the problem. The problem was a GFI switch that was tripped in the crawl space under the house. Took him all but 10 minutes to fix it. He even wondered out loud why the owner did not fix this the previous day when he was here. This guy told us he had to charge $125 for a full hour even if he was only there 10 minutes so my wife asked him to replace a few switches which he did and all was done very well. The issue came when he "wrote up" the bill. He left the house to go to his truck to write up the invoice and came back. I used a credit card so just handed it to him to swipe on his handheld machine; he did not warn me that the quote was not more than double. When I looked at the receipt I saw a nearly $300 charge that I had just paid for! I thought for sure he made a mistake as the invoice said " 2 hours" for that same day. When I asked him about this he said his boss told him (when he was in the truck) to charge me for his hour the previous day . Keep in mind he offered to drop by saying he was just up the street, and, in my opinion, he could have easily repaired the problem the prior day but instead told him he would send someone out the next day. He never said anything about charging me for his drop in and the young guy the next day never told me up front he was gonna charge my card for more than double the quote and the understood charge. I called the owner who insisted he needed to be paid for his time the prior day. This was the owner. He did help me look at the work going on in my garage so I let it go but I will never ever use this company again. I hope they are happy to get the extra $150 or so cause it cost them an otherwise happy customer and also one who will never recommend them. Interestingly, I needed an electrician again only a week or two later and called Moss Electric who were amazing, trustworthy, fair in pricing and over delivered on service. read more

I had used Dr Electric several years ago. I was pleased, and called again early March of this year. I explained to Joe what I was wanting, Rather than having someone come and give a quote, he stated on the phone that is was a fairly straight ahead job. His quote was $200 on the low end to $350 on the top end. It would take an hour to 2 hours max. He would have his electricians pick up what they needed. CONS: 1. His electricians had no idea what they were suppose to be doing. Their work order for me what someone else's. 2. They did not have the supplies they needed. 3. I was charged for the time to go back to Nashville & back to Franklin to pick parts they should have already picked up. 4. They asked if I had tools so they would not have to go back to their truck, asked to use my vacuum to clean up, and left tools which they said they needed and would pick up. (they have not) 5. The 2 hour job took at least 6.5 hours & cost me a day of work. 6. The $350 job ended being over $600. PROS: My house did not burn down. This could have all been avoided with an onsite quote. I was told they are in the area everyday, so it would not have been inconvenient. The most frustrating part is being told by Joe 3 times that he has not seen the ticket and he would get back with me. It has been a month, and I have heard nothing. If you like being over charged, and being lied to about following up, the Dr is for you. From my experience, the Dr is guilty of malpractice. read more

I like Dr. Electric. I like listening to his weekly radio program. He obiously knows his stuff and is up front with people, so you might say I'm a fan - but I'm still going to shoot straight. I'm just going to preface this with I'm not an electrician (obviously) and I don't know what's 'common' in the industry. Pros: * Workers called ahead and were there about 20 minutes later. * The guys assessed the situation and made short work of adding a new flood light to a new location. * Total cost came in nearly dead on to Dr. Electric's verbal estimate. * Fair pricing and quick work. Cons: * Billing starts the minute the workers start driving your way. If they're 30 minutes away - you're paying for that time (This is called a "truck" charge (it's about $1 per min). I guess others might call this a "trip" charge. Maybe this is common practice, but you need to know about it going in and they don't disclose it over the phone. So make sure you're near Hendersonville (Dr. Electric HQ) or near their last job. * The Dr. Electric scheduling system leaves a bit to be desired. I tried scheduling my appointment about 5 days ahead. I was told by the owner they don't schedule that far ahead and to call back on Friday for a Saturday appointment. I called on Thursday (thinking it was Friday!) for an appointment the next day (Friday). On Thursday evening when I'd realized what I'd done I called to correct my error and schedule for Saturday morning. I was told Saturday morning was booked (wait, what happened to only booking a day ahead?) but they could get to me Saturday afternoon. I had a birthday party to go to so I asked about Monday afternoon. They booked it. On Monday afternoon no one had shown up, so I called and the owner forgot we had talked! I like these guys, but that was frustrating. Just seems like they're making it up as they go and writing it down on post it notes. Well he got some guys over pretty quick despite the mix up and those points are listed above in the Pros section. Overall I still like Dr. Electric. I would use them again, but the scheduling part was probably the biggest let down of the whole experience. read more

This has been my go-to electrician ever since we moved here over 10 years ago. They always do an excellent job. This time, however, I got an unpleasant surpuse. They charged me for the time it took to get to my home. The job took 50 minutes and was charged for 90 minutes (1.5 hours). So I the charge for travel was about the same as the time it took to do the job. I will think long and hard about using them again as long as this practice remains. Very disappointing. read more

My rental company used Dr. electric. Been dealing with them for a month and a half over an issue. They said the issue was with the electric company, and it's been a month dealing with the electric company as they continue to tell me that it wasn't an issue from their side it was an issue with the electrician.Then they were supposed to come last week and I waited all day and never received a call (I have a picture of my call log if anyone is interested that shows no calls were received). After a week of still not receiving any phone call from them to come and fix the issue, I contacted my rental company again. They said they thought it had been taken care of. They never heard back from Dr. Electric and assumed the job was complete. They gave me the name of Dr. electric and Joe, the owner. Joe was extremely rude and said that he had called me numerous times. I never received a phone call. He said that they only call once and they don't leave a voicemail and if you don't answer then they move onto the next job. It's not their policy to contact the rental company or to try to contact you again. Seems like really bad customer service to me. But his work loads gonna be much lighter now. Since I played the recording of the phone call to the rental company, and shown them my call log, they've agreed that they're not going to use him anymore. Proceed at your own risk. Seems like they want to charge you for a visit, then scapegoat and blame electric companies or customers instead of fixing the real issue. read more

We hired Dr. Electric to run electricity from our building to a sign to uplight it. I was quoted one thing, but the bill turned out to be double the estimate. I was given a reasonable explanation and paid the bill. But a week later the trench they dug to lay their conduit caved in and revealed that they had cut one of our roof drainage pipes in three places. I called Joe Makrey and he said they can't be responsible for what they don't know about. However, the crew knew the first time they broke the pipe - it shouldn't have been broken two more times. AND the crew never told me about it. Didn't tell Joe either until I called to question him about it. Had I been notified, I could have at least asked them to leave the trench open until a plumbing crew could come out and lay new pipe. Instead, they covered up their mistake, hoping we wouldn't find out. I now have an estimate of $1700 (about what my original quote was for the electrical job) to retrench and lay new pipe. Very disappointed in this. read more
