We were doing some shopping in Doylestown this past Saturday, and Doylestown Bookshop was one of the many surprises among the shops we visited. For modern bookstores (in our post-Amazon world), it's an enormous independent bookstore: well-stocked, expansive, well laid out (not crowded). I loved their huge Staff Picks section - their many staff members suggested books than run the gamut from YA to romance to literary fiction. They also had an area of goods and tchotchkes, making it a great shop for buying gifts. If you need a book (or want a book - since you can never have too many?) and are in the area, I highly recommend Doylestown Bookshop for a browse. read more

Really enjoyed our visit here on a stop on a road trip. The selection and store is surprisingly vast! Small sale section in the back. Decent kids section. Cute items like rifle paper co gift items. I snagged a new first edition signed author edition of a popular adult book. My favorite part was noticing the bathroom had a changing table, some diapers and wipes for babies. My wife is a bookstore snob and has to visit one whenever we travel. She loves the locally owned bookshops and always supports them. Some are better than others but this one was worth the visit. My wife is an avid reader and her face is constantly in a book. We found this bookshop in the heart of downtown Doylestown and had to visit. This is a locally owned bookshop, large in size, and with a great selection of everything, including small gifts. Each section is largely displayed so you can find your poison. I bought several boxes of Christmas cards that were 50 % off while my wife bought several paperbacks. We learned they have authors that come visit and other events, like Blind Date with a Book. A nice vibe with pleasant staff. There is ample street parking but public lots in the area. read more

It's a nice clean shop in the center of town. I bought some puzzles and books. The puzzles [sold as new] were used; the inner piece bags were ripped-open and many of the pieces were already together. Yuck. read more

I've gone here several times over the years but most recently I went for a book launch! I don't know why I hadn't previously looked at their events because there is already an author event that I want to attend in February ! The book store is fairly large and well organized although I will admit I get sucked very easily into the books on display! I also just signed up for their rewards program which is exciting - I didn't know they had one! It's a great place to get books or other gift items I've even managed to get postcards here for my postcard swap I had done a few times! Overall a great spot! read more

This is both my local bookshop and one of my favorite places. The owner is such a kind and genuine person. Moreover, she works with a team of friendly, well-read and welcoming employees. The Doylestown Bookshop is invested in the community, and did an outstanding job communication with and among its customers during the pandemic that so dramatically impacted this community and area businesses. A great local resource we should treasure and support, the bookshop is - to my mind - part of the heart of Doylestown. I look forward to continuing to patronize this locally owned business as well as sending friends and family there for a unique and enjoyable "local" experience. Oh - and pre-COVID - this was a go-to spot for events and author readings you might expect would only be possible with a much larger type of organization. I hope that will resume one day. read more

This is the epitome of a local bookstore. Located right in town, this thoughtfully curated, quiet and comfortable store is a regular spot for me. They stock and discount all the best sellers and more importantly the staff curate an eclectic and representational sample of books. Cannot find what you are looking for, they will order it for you. Do not know what to read next, look at the wall of staff recommendations or the display of indie bookshop favorites. They also have a terrific selection of cards, gifts, children's books, puzzles, and games. If you are visiting Doylestown you will love this shop. In a world where everything you want or need to know is literally in the palm of your hand in the form of a mini-computer (a.k.a iPhone/android), who bothers to go to a bookstore anymore? You'd be surprised! Only a few "big chain" bookstores still remain, you know the ones I'm referring to...they serve the "crack" coffee everyone's addicted to and expensive chocolates too. Let you get your fix while you pick up a book. Always seemed a bit overly decadent to me. And I'm a coffee lover too. And every time I stop by one, I would end up buying more than just books. Ugh! The Doylestown Bookstore is a small, privately owned business. They may not have several floors of books or endless categories of odd topics; However, what the lack in volume, they make up in a courteous and a welcoming feel and a wonderful staff! The store fits beautifully into Doylestown looking slightly antique with a tin ceiling, carpet flooring and couches/chairs scattered about. The children's section is simply adorable and packed with outstanding reads for all ages including magazines and the latest hardcovers. If you can't find what you're looking for, the owners will gladly order books for you. As far as prices go, I'd say they are competitive. Amazon, they are not. Then again, if you want someone to throw your latest bestseller hardback at your doorstep, maybe you should purchase from Amazon and miss the fun of the Doylestown Bookstore experience. Your loss. Parents beware !! Do not let your children into this store unattended. My 14 year old was sold an adult book, rated as "suitable for 22 and over" on the Target website, with no adult present and no questions asked. When I called to clarify what their policy was, I was told there was none and that they would willingly sell any book to any child with or without an adult's consent. What a disgrace ! read more

Everything you want in a local bookstore. Big store with lots of good sections (e.g., kids, grades 2-3, 4-6, young adult, etc.) and plenty of seating near the magazine section. I feel that this store has some room for improvement. Their selection of modern fiction is reasonable, but beyond that there isn't much to look at. It is a pretty big store, and yet, it feels like they don't have a lot of non-fiction. For example, their politics/current events section was crammed into a few shelves on the wall. If there's one thing I feel should be expanded. Still, there are positives. I had a specific book in mind that I wanted to get as a gift and they had it. They also have a wall of recommendations, and a good number of them. All in all, I'd recommend going here, especially if you know what you're looking for. This is the cutest small-town bookstore I have come across in a long while. That being said, I wish the selection was geared toward a few more classics, and there was more in the way of hard-backed books. Upon speaking to the owners or employees I have found they will accommodate such needs by way of a special order, but I just wish they were in stock. Also on my wish-list is a cozier place to sit and peruse the books you intend the purchase- right now it is a few sets of tables and chairs- when a cushy couch would be much more inviting. Highlights of the store include a vast repository of Bucks County writers, and Bucks County topics (examples include the works of James A. Michener as well as a coffee-table book on Bucks County Gardens), tons of modern fiction, a cute children's literature section, and a great stationary, wrapping paper and gift card selection. As previously mentioned, the staff is knowledgeable and helpful. There is also a frequent customer reward program which is nice. If you live near or around Doylestown, I recommend stopping in to support this local gem, but unfortunately you might need to go to a Barnes and Noble or Amazon.com for nonfiction or classic books- especially if you are a book snob like me and prefer hardcover. read more

This is always a place I stop by when visiting my parents. Growing up in Dtown and going to a CB school, it was easy to get my summer reading books each year--they were always stacked right in the main area, ready to be ransacked by teens and tweens of the like. I was even here at Midnight Madness, awaiting with most of my family for the last Harry Potter book to come out so we could buy our copy. I've seen this place changed around over the years, but I do think that it has been all for the better. Sure, they will not have all the books that a B&N has (but do B&Ns even have everything you want? No.), but I would rather support a local bookstore than the larger chains, without a doubt. Even if you were unable to find the book that you were looking for, take the time and walk around. Check out the staff picks, look in the poetry section, the fiction section, or what have you. UPDATED APRIL 7, 2011 This place is the BEST. A nice little cool, comfy town. No stress, lots of great stores in Doylestown. This Doylestown Bookshop is a nice store. Nice people, friendly and professional and helpful. For me, being used to different bookstores, unique ones or very large ones, the store is a slight disappointment. I would have liked more. It is an okay bookstore if you happen to be here but it is not one that you would travel to see or use. For neighborhood people it is fine, simply because they do not have to go far to get to the bookstore. You can make this a day trip if you drive there without making the bookshop as your main focus. Doylestown is a cute little town with interesting sites. So, it is a nice day, and end it off by checking out the books in this store. ADDED: This little town is especially nice to visit during the Christmas season. And it has a cute little bookshop also. read more

When shopping here remember that you're in Doylestown so you will pay more. When I first walked in I was greeted kindly but not asked what I was looking for. I looked about for a about 10 minutes before asking the cashier if they have postcards. They did in a little makeshift cafe area. This is the place to go if you want Bucks County postcards. Nice small town bookstore. Store is nicely organized, clean and comfortable. There is a couch and some other seats and tables near the front window. I personally don't read a lot of books but my nephew does. We picked up a few books for him. This store has two entrances, there's the main entrance off of Main Street and you can also enter through the back. read more

We've been going to this bookstore for more than 15 years. Have never had any big issues--other than the normal bucks county retail experience--not helpful, not friendly, not knowledgable. I spend my money here and not the big box stores (or Amazon) for a reason, being a business owner I believe it's important to support small business owners. I spoke to a manager recently about an issue and was surprised by their lack of caring and professionalism. Next time, I'll order from Amazon. read more

I go to this bookshop often, I have been more impressed with the service lately. I like their kid's section, bargain books, new releases, staff picks and magazine section. I also like that they can order a book with no obligation to buy, I like the reader's rewards, its great to get a $10 gift certificate once having spent a certain amount. I am going to try a book club, they have many there which is nice. I went to a writer's group which had autographed copies available, I also went to a great book signing which was great. Exactly what you would hope for in a small town bookstore. Pleasant, knowledgable staff in a friendly, comfortable atmosphere. The only issue I have is that due to their size they do not have a huge selection. They can order anything, but I usually need the book immediately, or I'm not sure what book I want. I want to browse first, and they have limited inventory. None the less, my husband and I stop in around once a month and find something interesting to buy probably half of the time. Visit the bookshop for the second time today as a birthday present to myself. I wish it were closer so I could visit more often. There is nothing bad to be said. The people are friendly and welcoming, however, they leave you to browse without being pushy and in your face. If you have a question, they will gladly help out. Wonderful place. My mom and sisters go there frequently, mainly to purchase their school-required reading books from a local, small business. I go there because they seemingly always have what I'm looking for, and sometimes something new catches my eye and I'll sit down and browse. The people are always nice, and no one has yet bugged me about bringing in coffee from Coffee & Cream (which I somehow always do). I do wish they had some comfy couches or something better than their chairs, but I guess that's just more of an incentive to actually buy whatever you're reading and take it home. I'd give it more than 5 stars, because recently, I had to call a bunch of independent bookstores in the Philadelphia area to see if they'd want to carry a few copies of a book (written by an author whom I'm supporting through internship work, Philadelphia Stories). Many places have been rude (understandable, given our current economy and its unfriendliness to small businesses) but Doylestown came through. The person I spoke with was super nice and supportive, and made my phone-phobia go away. Although I don't live in Doylestown anymore, I'll continue to go here every time I visit and I really wish Philly had a place as cool as this. read more

Surprisingly rude service. I approached a woman who was standing near the register, not on the phone, and before I could say a word, she said "I'm busy, I'm already helping someone." This is the second time I've had this happen here. It's not like they're ever swamped in there; apparently the people can't multi task even a teensy bit. Selection is small and prices are high. Doylestown Bookshop is everything you'd want in a bookstore! I don't usually write reviews but in this case I want people to know how wonderful this store is. Its a cozy, small town, family owned business. The staff are so helpful in finding the perfect book and there's so much to offer everyone. I hear folks all the time that go out of their way to visit the Bookshop when they're in town and claim it's their "favorite place!" What other store elicits those kinds of responses?? It's the kind of place where a mother and her daughter might be curled up on the floor reading a favorite book because they just couldn't wait to get home (or to a chair.). And for those Amazon lovers, check the prices again. Lately, whenever I compare prices, Doylestown Bookshop prices are comparable if not better than anything online! This place is a gem! read more

Awesome local book shop - I found it 18 years ago when I moved to Bucks County and it's my go-to place for buying and browsing.

Not my absolute favorite bookstore, as I'm a romance reader and they're admittedly on the slim side for romance pickings, but it's a great little bookshop that definitely earns its community support. The staff is knowledgable and supportive and the selection in most genres is excellent -- especially children's, YA, literary fiction. Special ordering is a breeze, and, unless you go on a busy evening, the rear lot provides some parking. They also host a lot of signings and talks. read more
