This place has a metric ass-ton of costumes, it's hard to know where to start. Speaking of ass, I was half-assing my outfit for a party.... I just needed a mask. That's all, sadly. Which kind of sucked because from giant M&M outfits to period pieces, there's a lotta razzle dazzle in here, it's the sort of place you come when you want to one-up everyone at your ex-girlfriend's Halloween party and nothing less than the best will do. I actually wish I had that kind of party to go to because dreeeesss uuuuuppss! Ah well, Halloween is just around the corner.

Two levels crammed full of costumes from every possibly historical period, right through to Star Wars and Star Trek and you-name-it-they-got-it costumes. Friendly, attentive staff make the burden of choice easy as pie and their helpful knowledge is abundant and impressive. Great pricing and an excellent hire policy round out the the experience to make this a 5 star business in my view. Truly awesome.

It was also a nice walk down memory lane to visit. Kmart was part of my youth growing up, having a store within walking distance during my pre-driving days. Unfortunately, they were on a slow than faster decline, culminating in their closing their last mainland US store in 2024. But here in Australia, they continue to be a large presence, with 214 total stores, 52 in New South Wales. I was curious about the history of Kmart in Australia: -- first one opened in 1969, as a joint venture between Kmart US and Coles Meyer Australia, with Kmart US owning 51% -- in 1978, Kmart US traded its share in Kmart-Australia for a 20% share of Coles. -- in 1994, Kmart US solds all of its shares, making a Kmart-Australia a completely separate entity. I did buy something here: been looking for Pokemon trading cards for my daughter, and found a collector set here with many expander decks for retail price. Pokemon cards seem to be popular again, and haven't been able to find any without significant markup. Checkout was self, but I needed a lot of help since the item was security secured. They also scan your receipt for any purchased items as you leave the store. Wouldn't say the workers would add to the stereotype of Aussies being so friendly. Didn't see any 'blue light specials' when I was there. Later learned that they had them very early in their existence in Australia, but they went away once it broke away from the US mothership.

Sydney had lost one of her raddest venues and a place renowned for putting on ace performances, plays, sales, exhibitions and just about anything else you can think of. It was making way for a bakery. Now, I'm all for baked goods, but Sydney can't afford to lose little gems like this that add something irreplaceable to the fabric of this damned fine city. Huzzah, then, that District 01 has risen - phoenix-like! - from the ashes of corporate suckitude and is reincarnated in Randle Lane, a small, clean alleyway near Central Station and the place is cooler than ever. HUZZAH I SAY. I attended the relaunch party last night and while there were canapes and live tunes and drinks what I really got excited about was the venue: a white-walled space ready to be transformed into whatever, whenever. A blank canvas waiting for imagination to recreate it into anything the user desires. Light globes hang low from the ceiling. Entry is up the stairs of a repurposed loading dock. And . . . there's just something about partying in a secret alleyway that makes me feel cooler than I probably (er, actually) am.

This is definitely one of those places you've stumbled upon by accident and you want to keep it a…read moresecret. Down a little alleyway off a quiet street, there's a set of door with a sign on them that reads "District 01". Inside is a converted warehouse with white floors, walls and ceiling and a few stacks of white pallets. I was here for a Yelp event so the projector was beaming District 01 offers with intermittent Yelp logos. The night was fairly warm and humid but the venue remained cool enough even though it was packed with people. This is defo worth keeping in mind if you're an event coordinator/PR/marketing peep looking for cool, new venues for events.

After going to a dress-up store that offered a rental for $80, I walked along oxford street to find some inspiration (not that type of inspiration) and entered Smart Dollar to see what they had. I was after a Mexican cowboy outfit, and found exactly what I was looking for, it was $21.95, and although it said 'keep away from fire' I bought it, and survived the night. I left the store with shot glasses, 10 for $3.00, straws, plastic cups, napkins, and other great party supplies. They also had a great array of kitchen supplies that I will think about going back and getting, as I'm keen to see what the quality will be like.

Even though that doesn't seem be the way in this Darlinghurst variety shop, I can still appreciate a bargain when I see one. With an array of random odds and ends, this catch-all shop is a good place to look for that strange item you don't know where else to find. With Halloween approaching, the novelty of a store like this goes way up. Need some devil horns? What about a fairy wand? Smart Dollar has these items, as well as all the other cliche spooky necessities. I personally purchased a quad pack of craft glitter for $2.50. But trust that it took every single bit of will power to not walk out of there with a japanese lunch box and a 10 pack of pocket tissues.
