I was looking for something to do near my airbnb cause the bar I *intended* to check out that night (Cotidiana, which I do strongly recommend) was annoyingly and unexpectedly not open. On my way back from that bar to my airbnb, I saw a sign that said "rooftop bar", and said, hey, might as well at least pop in to check it out. The space is pretty gorgeous (mostly because you can see all the roofs of all the buildings around it, which are surprisingly pretty given you can't really see them that well from the ground). It really needs to be a bit brighter, though - I get they're going for ambiance, but I *literally* had to use my phone's flashlight app in order to be able to read the menu. So that was fun, especially since nobody spoke that much English when I was there, nor seemed particularly interested in being helpful regardless (my wife speaks a bit of Spanish, and her questions were generally answered curtly and unhelpfully, notably when I asked her to ask what "mezcal buen bicho" was, and the guy replied "it's mezcal" and then just walked away. I know it's mezcal, clearly, but why was that listed as "mezcal buen bicho" and the other drink with mezcal on the menu just listed as "mezcal"? Apparently it's just a brand of mezcal (I just looked it up), but yeah, not super helpful.
Anyway, the first drink I tried was pretty good, though not amazing - tried the "Romerito Reyes", which according to the menu, was mezcal with rosemary and ancho reyes, so I dunno where all the fruit flavors came from... not remotely what I was expecting, but it was still tasty enough for $130. Tasted like a good mescal margarita with a touch of rosemary in it. That one came super fast after I ordered it (took a while to decipher the menu, not to mention just physically read it), so I was confused about all the crummy reviews of the service at that time. Then they took my menu when I wasn't looking, and it took like 10 minutes to get a waiter's attention to get one back, so yeah, kinda see what they were saying now. Then as mentioned, they were pretty lousy with answering questions about the drinks, and it took forever to order a second one, as well as to get the check, so yeah. Service seems... variable, like they have too much on their plates (and also just might not care that much).
Anyway, the second drink I tried was more flavorful, though they immediately took my menu away again after I ordered, so I couldn't write down any details... but looking up the menu on yelp now, I believe it was the Pibirita, from mescal with jamaica and passionfruit. Still fruity and sweet, but I could taste the mescal a bit more. It was enjoyable enough.
So anyway, 4 stars for the drinks (the two I tried were pretty solid, even if Cotidiana nearby does similar style drinks way better for about the same price, other than the part where Cotidiana is apparently closed on Sunday), 5 stars for the ambiance of the rooftop space itself, and yeah, 1 star for the (lack of) service, with extra negative bonus points for doing the thing (apparently oddly common in CDMX, but way more annoying when the service is this lousy) where they ask you verbally how much of a tip you want to leave, hover over you while you select a value, and especially egregiously in this case, there isn't even an *option* to not leave a tip, the options were "10%", "20%", and (in Spanish only), "enter a different value", so you have to spend extra time very obviously selecting to not leave a tip, while your waiter (who recall, absolutely in our case didn't deserve a single peso, but got 10% anyway for this reason), literally stands over you holding the device with your card in it. read more
