The gin selection is exceptional and there's always a gin of the week, which is a great opportunity to try a gin you may not have encountered before. Society also now makes their own tonic syrup in house, and I believe they're the first place in Hobart to be doing that. ALL THE KUDOS! It's such a special sort of offering and shows how much they care about their drinks. Also back to gin again, Society do gin tasting platters... correct. Half nips of four different gins (be it a Tasmanian platter, an Australian platter or a tailored platter) with a splash of tonic and a garnish to suit each different gin. A really fun way to try a few different variations in one sitting, because gins can be so different! I LOVE GIN! There are always plenty of events happening at Society too, all posted on their facebook, from regular weekly events like Tapas Tuesday to one-off events like fundraiser dinners and spirit masterclasses.

When you went inside it was enormous though. I got a good vibe from here, the interesting antiques and art, the fermented veggies and preserves for sale and lovely staff. Between us we tried the beef short rib with veggies and horseradish sauce (best, ever!), the fish fingers and chips with a pea smash (that is, salmon fish fingers), a rigatoni ragu and the chicken with salsa verde. Anyone can go for a meal. They have regular menu and also specials on a large chalkboard. Most go to socialize and drink in the bar area but on the parking side front there are a dozen or so tables for dining. They were having a raffle when I was there and if they called your number you chose something off a table. I saw the second winner choose a six pack of beer. The food is pretty good, but the fun part is watching the locals. It feels like a trip back in time. The menu here is like many places in Tasmania- fish,seafood, beef , with some chicken like Chicken Parmi as they call it here. Like everywhere else, loads of fries. Nubeena is a tourist area in the far south. There are a few towns a wee bit farther south but basically south of here is open sea all the way to Antarctica. The two of us were the only tourists in the place. Everyone seemed to know each other. As is the case most everywhere here you order at the desk and pay, and when ready its brought to your table. The lady at our hotel suggested this place when we asked about evening dining as most places in Tasmania close EARLY. In small towns the majority of places to eat serve breakfast and lunch only. 16:00 or 16:30 hours seems to be a common closing time around the island.

Then again perhaps they just don't do vegan food well there and can only be trusted to do well on their specialties. That's why I gave this four stars -- because I get a sense that most of their menu items they probably do well, but there's a few duds on the menu are that are probably not in the chefs wheelhouse.
