Apple bus

This is a such cute farm. I love the ambience, view of nature and the service. The ride on the Apple bus was fun and they had a good bunch of apples to choose from. The ground is a bit uneven so make sure you don't trip.

Red Haven peaches! When they are in season, this is where you can pick your own. They are so delicious! Throughout the seasons there are other fruits and berries available for u-pick so check their website often so you don't miss a harvest. For example, they have blackberries, Marionberries, raspberries, nectarines, peaches, several varieties of apples (honey crisp, McIntosh, Golden delicious etc) and lots of pears. Rows and rows! Each labeled with the variety. When you enter Douglas Farm from the main road, the drive is gravel and you then enter a shady area where you park. To the left is their farmers market area with pre-picked seasonal produce. Depending on the month you are there, you can buy fresh beans eggplant, beats, corn, peppers, apples, pears, gourds, just to name a few! Past the stand are the rows and rows of the orchards and to get out to the u-pick area, they transport you in small buses. It's so beautiful and peaceful in the orchards. Unlike other farms on the island, I didn't see any area where you can sit and picnic. Prices are fantastic! If you are buying in bulk to make jams, pies, crisps and such, a stop at Douglas Farms a few times throughout the season is a must.

Came here because boyfriend found this place to "pick something", and we ended up with tons of fruit + a mini adventure! We came here on 9/3, in a quiet weekday afternoon. Boyfriend wanted to come to Sauvie island for some U-pick action, so we came. It took a bit to drive thru the dusty rocky entrance, then you entered this parking circle surrounded by trees. Which was quite nice. We walked to the stand, asking what's available for picking. The girl attending the stand said most of the farm was closed. BUT if we wantED, they could drive us to pick some pears in a buggy. It was a hot day, and the girls looked reluctant to take us out. So I told my boyfriend lets go somewhere else. "No i want to ride the buggy!", he said to me. To my surprised, one of the girls came back to picked us up in a buggy! It was a bit of a drive to the pear trees, but it was worth it. The trees were full of beautiful pears. Conveniently, there were some fresh red apples for picking as well. From the pear point, we were picked up by "the uncle" in an air conditioned vehicle. He asked if we wanted some peaches. Just when I was thinking "didn't we passed the season already?", my boyfriend shouted out "Yeahhhhhh!". The the bus took a 180 degree turn to the peach trees. Again, to my surprise, we were surrounded by plenty of peaches! Most of them did start to turn brown, but we managed to pick about 20 or so. When we returned to the bus, uncle was no where insight. Just when I thought we got abandoned, he emerged from the trees with arm full of peaches, picked just for us! Overall, we got a good mixture of crunchy red apples, sweet hard pears and delicious late peaches, plus 3 sweet corns grabbed from the stand for about 26 bucks. I wouldn't say they have the most chatty, friendly staff. However, I was impress with the price, fruit variety and generosity of the staff. So yes I'd definitely come back again. As for my boyfriend, he thought the buggy ride was rad!

I came here to go apple picking with my family and it was a wonderful experience! You have to drive down a gravel road to get to the farm and once you pull up, they have a decent amount of parking available. You'll be greeted with a small farmers market on your left with produce, boxes and wagons. Due to liability, you have to be bused to the apple trees and can't walk. The bus seats 14 people so on a crowded day, it may be a little slow. We went on a Sunday afternoon and the crowds weren't too big. We could only pick two kinds of apples since the other kinds were either not in season or not ripe yet. However, we did come home with about 18 pounds of apples which only cost us about $24! You definitely get your money's worth! We also ended up buying 2 squashes that were huge from the market which were only $2 ($1 each). I did hear that the apple pickings are slim or no longer later in the day towards 2pm so I suggest going earlier in the morning!

I like this years strawberry fields location being just past the NEW baby Brahman cow. He's soooo cute! The berries are sooooooo good!!!! The Gift Shop has some cool new treats. The dips and beer breads look good. Fun to look at the biggest selections of salt and pepper shakers anywhere around. Oh the signs keep us laughing while we shop. The Patio Cafe' and Coffee cart are a must too! You can't go wrong with anything you order. My go to is the Turkey Panini but the Whole Farm burger is a fav of my family too. Looking forward to picking fresh flowers next month, or is it August?? Thank you Pumpkin Patch for your friendly staff, fun activities and a great place to spend the day!

I tried their "Ryan's" apple cider, which is just stored on the shelves in the store, and it had clearly fermented at some point. I ended up having to throw it away. I'm guessing since the store is open air, it gets warm in there at times. I also picked up a frozen chocolate cream pie, and when we got into it, it tasted like it had not been properly kept frozen for its life, and was claggy. My partner and I both had to spit out our first bite and toss the pie.

This farmers market is a little less hectic I'd say, and I dig it!…read more Nestled in a square parking lot, next to a few small businesses and a New Seasons, is the Orenco Farmers Market. Many times I've seen it and many times I've avoided it. But now I regret not checking it out the first time they opened up a few years ago. Here's a few tips and details: * Parking * Most folks park in the New Seasons parking lot, or down the residential streets. The times I've been here, the lot has never been full. So I've never had any issue finding parking. * Favorite Vendors * ~ The Pie Guy - out of North Plains. If you yelp that, you'll see why he's different. Love their variety of pies. ~ Pilgrim's Roasted Nut'z - Another North Plains favorite! You can literally go nuts buying more than one bag. ~ Kookido - UGH, mochi-filled cookies! I'm a mochi lover and chewy soft cookie kind of guy. These are heaven in a container! ~ Pablo Munoz Fruits - I'm all about their peaches and berries! ~ Martinez Family Farms - Come here early for these guys. They always have a long line to pay. ~ Favorite Produce - I dig their fresh flower bouquets. ~ Helvetia Vineyards & Winery - Another local wine favorite. Try a sample! ~ Baird Family Orchards - mmm mmm, gotta love them peaches! Especially their Sweet Sue yellow peaches. ~ Our Little Farm and Nursery - Haven't bought anything from these guys, but they're the ones that freshly roast peppers. People love'em! ~ Slow Rise Bakehouse - Located out of Forest Grove. Check out my ROTD for them ;) ~ Thompson Farms - The "pear guy"! He's picking bosc pears soon. I cannot wait! ~ Papa's Sunflower Seeds - Flavored roasted sunflower and pumpkin seeds. These are the guys that do team fundraising. ~ Ochoas Catering & Events - Necessito burrito! They wrap up fat burritos (and more) and their salsas are simply el mejor! For the most part, if it's a hot summer day, the market can close a bit early due to excessive heat. I've yet to go here on a rainy day. But in closing for my next visit, I'm trying the pasta lady, the hot sauce guy, and the fresh mini donuts. Oh and the mouthful momo stand. Support your locals folks!

It's a good opportunity to support local and small. Parking wasn't an issue as there is desinated parking areas in apartment lots in front of the market. My favorite part was the local food vendors! We grabbed momos (delicious), tacos (best tacos in Oregon in my opinion), and hummus. HIGHLIGHT OF MY WEEKEND! S/O to Ochoa Catering and Events and Hummus Spot for putting my partner and I in our taco and hummus era. The service from these vendors were great and it was fun chatting about how their business started. Orenco Station - Hillsboro market is laid back and a good break from the hustle and bustle of city life. We will be back!

We found out about this hidden chestnut orchard on the last weekend of the season! I emailed the…read moreorchard to confirm their hours of operation for U-pick (since it was the final weekend and rain was in the forecast). I received a quick response from Andrew Robello, the owner, he confirmed they are open, rain or shine! I was so excited to take my mom on this adventure! Next day, we arrived bright and early. We were greeted by Andrew's mom at the bucket station, she was such a sweetheart. Such a nice family! As we ventured into the chestnut grove, more families arrived. This is a fun outing for the whole family. Just keep an eye on the kids. Bring kitchen tongs or thick garden gloves to pick up the chestnuts. If you've never seen the needles of chestnuts, you're in for a prickly surprise! Be careful and get ready for a fun scavenger hunt! You can easily fill your bucket within half an hour! This can be good or bad. Good because you know what you're doing and you arrived at the perfect time to collect fresh dropped nuts. Bad- because you're picking up any nuts you find and not checking for signs of rot. Since you're buying per pound, I recommend you do a quick squeeze and eye inspection for insect holes. If you hear or feel air from the squeeze, it's not fresh or about to rot. If you want to keep your chestnuts for several weeks, it's best to find the freshest nuts. Confession time....we spent nearly 2 hours leisurely enjoying the hunt. As we realized how much time has passed, we stumbled up an area scattered with fresh jumbo nuts! Holy moly! Guess what we did.... We dumped our bounty and filled our bucket with the fresh jumbo nuts! We kept some of the best looking smaller nuts. We had fresh chestnuts for over a month and shared it with friends and neighbors. Since this review is so so late, I can't remember the exact cost and weight. I do remember they gave us a nice season end discount. They are so sweet! Regardless, the time I shared with my mom scavenging the chestnut groove is a priceless memory I'll always have. Thank you for helping us create new memories, Robello family! See you in 2025 season!

No Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's Day dinner can be complete without chestnuts. The best…read moreI've found in Portland come from Cascadia Chestnuts' stand at the Saturday Portland Farmers Market at PSU. Cascadia Chestnuts is a certified organic orchard growing select French and Italian "marrone type" chestnut cultivars. If you've been to Italy during the holday season and bought a bag of chestnuts from a grizzled vendor roasting them over a grill, they were likely called "marroni." The ones Cascadia grows and offers are the real deal. My Sicilian family would roast chestnuts in the oven on a cookie sheet, after first giving the shells a small slice so they wouldn't burst, and then snack on them after the dinner was finished. We had a tradition on New Year's Day involving the first roasted chestnut we selected. If it was good and peeled easily, your coming year would go well. If it was difficult to peel, expect difficulties. If it was partly rotten or even thoroughly rotten, well, you can figure out the rest. Delicious, quality chestnuts, locally grown. And no bad ones in the bunch.
