I also noticed that this library does some wonderful community engagement activities and is conveniently located right off Route 11! I like the programs that the library offers, like the after school meal program for under privlidged kids that they hold 2 days a week. The materials selection is not as big as you would think, considering the massive size of the building, but I can understand, considering that the library had to be rebuilt a few years ago due to a major roof collapse during a bad snow and ice storm. I guess they are trying to rebuild their collection. There is a plenty of parking available in their parking lot, and they also sell coffee, tea, and snacks to help benefit the library. Very nice place to hang out. :-) *Top-notch bathrooms. They are very clean.

I greatly enjoy the Osterhout's annual used book sale which is the largest in the area and typically held at the start of summer. You can take home an entire box full of books for very little money. This summer I found a used book for sale that I had previously checked out of the library some twenty years ago: a crime novel by Max Allan Collins entitled Spree. It was the same copy, now with a badly cracked spine and loose pages, but I bought it for nostalgic reasons. I'm also very pleased with the Osterhout's selection, particularly in regards to stacking rare and hard to find materials. I was searching for a book published in the 1970s but now out of print. Used copies of this book were selling for around $150. I was able to find a copy in the Osterhout's nonfiction section and am one of the few who had the pleasure of reading the book without spending an arm or a leg. I won't mention the title of the book in case some unscrupulous reader wants to check out the book, never return it, and sell the copy for profit. There was a time when I was obsessed with the concept of nuclear war and worried how fallout would effect our planet. During the height of the Cold War a number of films were made about this subject including the BBC television movie "Threads." "Threads" was know for its unflinching look at nuclear fallout and is regarded as one of the most dark and depressing films ever made. "Threads" was released on VHS shortly after its television premiere but had long since gone out of print by the time I wanted to see it. After scouring the Internet for a copy of the movie I finally found the VHS in the video section of the Osterhout. "Threads" has since been released on DVD and is now widely available but thanks to the Osterhout Library I didn't have to wait years to see it.

Located here are his grave, two statues, a sculpture with information boards, and an additional piece yet to be revealed. The area is quaint and quiet for the most part. Of the statues, one commemorates his participation in Football, with the other commemorating his participation in amateur athletics. The sculpture with the information boards was deigned by Kenrick N. Higa, but built by students at the local vocational tech school. Information boards surrounding the sculpture provide detailed information about Thorpe and have been kept updated. Two minor concerns I would mention is the grave could use better sealing around it, and some of the concrete sidewalks are starting to wear. Is the Jim Thorpe Memorial worth checking out if traveling though the area? Yes, it's worth stopping by. On the other hand, if you are making a special trip here, you need to plan other activities around the area as a stop here will only take around 15-30 minutes.

His remains, and a giant memorial stone, sit in the center, and are surrounded by statues of him as a football player and a triathlete. The statue of him playing baseball is still under construction, still under construction but if it's as nice as the other two, it will be a great addition. We spent at least 30 minutes here and I learned a lot about Jim Thorpe. I especially liked the section that discussed his twin brother and the thunder and lightning sculpture. I came away from this memorial with great respect for Jim Thorpe and utter disgust for his third wife who would sell his remains to this town to make a quick buck against his family's wishes. I'm also pretty disgusted with a town and it's people who would pull a stunt like this just to get a little extra tourism. Jim Thorpe seems to have been a philanthropic and kind person who worked hard and genuinely cared about other people. It's sad to think that he will spend eternity in a strange place so a few people could make some quick cash off of all he achieved.
