Weinstube Metzinger - The decor - traditional German grandma-esque.

    Weinstube Metzinger

Through the magic of Yelp we found Weinstube Metzinger after a visit to the Ehrenbreitstein…read moreFortress nearby. Touted as a "wine bar" on Yelp we approached the restaurant with visions of young and hip Koblenzers sipping on the latest Rhein-area vintages. What we saw instead was a demographic that was nearing or beyond the age of hip replacements gathered in large boisterous groups, digging into their schnitzels. Granted, we had gone in at the early-bird-special hour, but Weinstube Metzinger was decorated in a way that would appeal to the traditional German grandparent set, complete with plastic pumpkins on the table and homey wooden chairs and tables and brown/orange glazed tiles. None of that pulsating techno music you'd hear at your typical trendy wine bar. If Winestube Metzinger were to have a soundtrack, it would be a happy song played on the accordion accompanied by the sound of tinkling wine glasses and choruses of, "Ja, ist gut!". At about EUR3 for a glass of wine, we could afford to have more than one, and most patrons of the restaurant looked like they have. The restaurant is run by the Metzingers, whose family seal is shown on the front page of their menu. A short "welcome letter" on the first page of the menu tells of the family's commitment to and pride in their restaurant. The menu was in German, and the server apologized for his poor English, while we apologized for our poor German. (The server, probably the son, even apologized for asking if we wanted bread.) Not knowing what to expect, we ordered a small portion of schnitzel in mushroom sauce and two glasses of Riesling, which we were told was the driest whites they had. My halb trocknen (half-dry) Riesling was great while the trocknen was a little too dry for our taste. The HALF portion of schnitzel because two good portions, even after it was divided expertly onto two plates for us. Having had the same dish at Movenpick in Munster several days earlier we couldn't tell the difference in the mushroom sauce, though the schnitzel was prepared differently. The half portion of schnitzel - only EUR7. As the restaurant is small and the kitchen family run with one server working all the tables, some may find the service a little longer than usual. But Weintraube Metzinger is a throwback to the days when a friendly neighborhood restaurant was a home away from home, where the restaurant proprietor welcomed you, like family, and knew your kids names and what they were up to. By the time we left at about 7:30pm the place had filled up with several large groups who all seemed to know our server/owner personally. Not a typical stop for the average American tourist, but a great way to experience Germany and German hospitality if you are in the area.
