Had to cancel a summer trip to Cabot due to travel concerns over COVID 19. So my son and I took a 'local trip' to Southern Pines/Pinehurst instead. Loved Dormie Club. It's a big golf course. Although long, it was playable, and In excellent shape. Clubhouse folks were nicest and most welcoming on our trip. Felt like we had the golf course to ourselves. Their clubhouse is under construction, but not a distraction for us. Glad I got to play this one before it goes fully private. read more

Played this course on 3/30/19 with a group of 20. We were charged $175 each for the round and quite frankly this course did not even come close to hype. Based on the course conditions and greens this was a $50-$75 course at best. Quick update - no response from the course. Down to one star now. read more

First, the course is in a lovely setting and the staff outstanding; BUT spoiled by construction and noise everywhere. We were not prepared for this which seems unfair considering the price charged to play. It was really quite aggravating when you are trying to play your game and a large dump truck comes rolling up alongside the fairway, dust flying and very noisy. By the time you are green side, the dirt is being dumped and many workings are talking and shoveling. Not my idea of a great experience. I have played the best golf courses in North Carolina, and this isn't one of them. It shouldn't be considered in the same category as #2 and Linville Golf Club. Don't believe the hype. Dormie is a great golf course with a fun layout. The greens are funky and not in the best shape, but still rolled ok. The rest of the course is in great shape. The course is visually intimidating off the tee with the landing areas framed by waste areas. This course is severally lacking in amenities and shouldn't be considered upscale. No towels, scorecards or tees in the carts. The range balls weren't stacked, nor were they free ($5 for a small bag). The clubhouse has minimal food and drinks. The turnhouse has no food and only snacks and drinks. The bathrooms were porta-johns. This was a golf course. Nothing more, nothing less. If you want a fun, hard layout, definitely give it a try. But don't expect anything more than that. And don't buy in to the hype. read more

Wow - I am surprised by all the negativity. My group of 8 played here recently and enjoyed it. The course is challenging but fair. We look forward to playing it again on our next visit to the Pinehurst area. I liked the fact it was all about golf. Our starter gave us a tip sheet. On the 600 yard par 5 we talked to a couple of marshals who offered some tips on how to hit our second shots. They were very friendly. They had bottled water available on the course that is complementary and was appreciated on a hot September day. We will be back next year. read more

Golf course wise I personally love the layout and it's very fun to play. Fifteen of the eighteen are really good holes. It's always in good condition every time I have played it which is about ten times. I realize they have undergone a new structuring with ownership and are trying to make the place what it was intended to be which is a destination. I had a group of 8 this past weekend and called the pro shop to get a tee time. With their new crazy in my mind access policy, they wanted me to book through a member or one of their corporate partners. They wanted me to call Talamore so they could turn around and call Dormie to book a tee time. How ridiculous is that? I'm on the phone with you right now, have 8 players and want a tee time. We ended up heading to Mid Pines just to avoid this ridiculous hassle and had a great time there as always. The gentleman on the phone reinforced they will be absolutely 100% private in 2021 which they have always said since they opened. I hope they finally get their act together as the course is too good to be managed so poorly. They try to create a principal of scarcity and elitism with their course. Like I said the course is awesome and fun to play but when you have #2, #4, Country Club of North Carolina, Forest Creek, Mid Pines and Pine Needles next door you have some pretty stiff competition and there are just too many options to put up with their bs. It's sad because of all the places that need the money the most it's Dormie Club. I sincerely hope their new managers with their new national membership can right the ship because again the place is too good to have been managed so poorly. Even if I never play the course again as a native North Carolinian and one who goes to Pinehurst 10 times a year it is a unique asset to the Pinehurst area and I truly hope they succeed. read more

Wow, I've never seen such mixed reviews on single course. I found strains of truth in all of below, but overwhelming factor in my positive review is the design aesthetic. I loved it. I like, also, Mark Rothko paintings and know people who think his work is simplistic/overpriced for something a talented 10th grader could do (in their opinion). Unlike some of the reviewers below, I am not a single digit handicap. I'm a good two digit. Therefore I appreciated the ability to play the course strategically despite lack of length off tee. All the holes - except #17 - can be approached via the ground. Recovery shots around the green have several options usually. Really enjoyed my round. Thought value was great. Staff could be better, but lady behind lunch counter was quite pleasant. read more

Don't bother with old reviews The course is in great shape, which is awesome considering how little rain the area has had in recent weeks. There are tee boxes for every skill level. The course is spread out over several acres doing a fantastic job of using the local topography. Natural sand cart paths are fine with us. This is about the golf, not the asphalt or fancy amenities. Play it while you can. It will be going private in a year or two. PS: The last 2 years I can attest that the customer service is excellent. read more

No offense, but I would totally disregard the review below. I'm a 6.5 handicap that came down to Pinehurst to play 6 courses; honestly, Dormie Club so far has been my favorite, and here's why: 1) It's the best layout I've played (#2, #4, #8). I played from the tips, and certain holes take your breath away from the tee box. If you go and play it, you'll see what I mean 2) Compared to #2, it's actually a creative layout. I felt like half of the holes on #2 felt the exact same; not one hole out here looks like any other 3) It's hard. If you want a cake walk, don't play here. If you are a golf enthusiast that likes a challenge, play here 4) I actually found the staff quite friendly (maybe they read Iam's email?) - we had free bottles of water across the course and people who circled around, checking in to see how our rounds were going If you can deal with the lack of ball washers and a glorious club house, you're going to relish this course. I hope I get a chance to play here again. At this point, behind #8 and Dormie Club, #2 is a distant third. read more

Played 27 holes at Dormie today. Very positive experience. Apparently ranked #2 in NC in 2013. Great property in great shape. Greens roll perfectly. Would have given 5 stars but the only negative is the Blue Tees slope 130 @ 6576yds are way to hard for any golfer who doesn't drive 250yds consistently. Lots of carries over water or ravines. Seems the slope is too low. White Tees slope 124 @ 5910yds has several par 4s over 400yds and therefore 5 par 4s under 300yds. Too quirky. They have tried to make a hybrid blue/white but it doesn't really work. What they need is another set of tees...and I think they know it. A number of blind tee shots and a lot of severe uphills. No two holes are the same. Very few amenities but friendly staff. Small rustic clubhouse. Interesting and challenging! I would definitely go back. read more

Had a great experience. I see complaints on service, but service for me was fantastic. Pro shop, grill staff were fantastic. This is a purist's course - quiet, minimal information as far as pin placements, yardages, no gps on the cart, etc. Just golf. Greens and fairways were in great shape. Course map/yardage book is a photocopy of a hand-written/hand-drawn booklet, which is awesome. Very much enjoyed this experience. Great track! read more

Beautiful course that is, unfortunately, terribly diminished by a TOTAL lack of infrastructure and friendliness! By no infrastructure I mean: no ball washers (and I do mean NO ball washers), extremely minimal food at the turn, no water aside from the single bottle of water they give you when you arrive, no tee box markings except for a nearly-invisible gray concrete pillar at each tee, and really bad (bordering on childish) directional signage. The staff is arrogant and totally not helpful, bordering on distainful of your presence. Oh ... And no coolers! I understand this course was built to compete with Pinehurst #2, but #2 has no reason to be concerned about the competition. Heck, even the Dormie entrance looks uninviting. This is definitely NOT a do-over course for me or my buddies. read more

Great course with a challenging layout. Challenging !! Greens are well kept for our round Feb 21, 2018. Several odd things to note. There is no pin position sheet for players. They only do that for tournaments, we were told. So, figuring out where the pin is can be a bit difficult and time wasting. (slowing play). No beer at the clubhouse. Open for how many years and no beer license ?? Don't let the stated yardages on the holes fool you. The short holes are uphill. A short par 5 (# 17) goes steadily uphill and finishes with a 3rd shot up a cliff.... A ridiculous hole 10 from the white tees of 600 yards. The blues and blacks are further back. Course some what has a feel like Tobacco road although fewer blind shots. Greens with lots of contours and hard to hold at times. some contours remind the player of moguls on a ski slope. Worth a play and if the above issues are addressed, worth multiple plays. read more

Played back in February and loved it for a first try. Loved the creative shot options. Definitely better to miss left on approach as most shots feed right. You can draw or fade off the tee, better land on the runway, waste areas if you miss No rough to speak of but like #2 the fun starts when you get to the green. Not as severe. Several sets of tees to pick so get the right one because distance is not the advantage here. Having fun is. Playing 36 this weekend at 95 degrees and bringing a cooler full of water. As someone said. Don't believe the hype. I can find lots of golf courses scattered through the southeast that are pretty much shorter versions of this. I like the lack of amenities. The greens were fast. I like that I could walk for $50. I hate cart paths so that was nice. I like that it's basic. And it's a great value at $50. But. It isn't special. I was expecting special. It's not pinehurst 2. And not even pinehurst 4 or 8. It's not top 25 in the state. Little things. No cups on putting green. Greens that are too undulating. No strategy off the tee, although there is a lot into greens. Too many blind shots. I shot 1 under from tips. It could have been mid 60s if I made anything. But if every 15 footer breaks 8 feet it's not very likely you'll make much so I didn't think it rewarded good play. It's a fun course and good to play with a bunch of buddies so you can laugh off the greens that are I guess a mixed attempt t Augusta and pinehurst 2. But top 25 in the state. Not to me. read more

I find the lack of amenities to be a huge plus. I love the sand cart paths and the absence of anything other than golf. Played here several times in March 2017. Cold March for Pinehurst. New Ownership. Very Accommodating. Simple clubhouse/bar/deck. Golf is first class. One of only 2 or three Pinehurst courses with bent grass greens. It has everything . Short and really tough par 3's and 4s...a few real brutes for Par5s. Not just a bombers course. Need local knowledge for greens( always look where high ground is helps!). I have seen a few green fee complaints in reviews. dont think they are justified. If you are on a budget, there are many other options in Pinehurst. In season, their top fee is competitive with like rating wise courses. I found golf course, especially for March, to be in excellent condition. Shot quality is high. Can play low shots/runner on several holes and then again, especially 17, you must get the ball in the air! Will be back this fall and look forward to playing there, having a 19th hole with a good smoke on the patio and listen to the pines sing in the wind! read more

What a disappointment! I look forward to playing great golf courses and I was shocked that we were charged $175 for what the Proshop attendant said was the 2nd best golf course in NC! The first hole was overseeded for the appearance of having green fairways... that was the only hole that was overseeded! The starter was arrogant and unfriendly to our entire group. The tee boxes were shabby and tee markers just thrown on the ground. Greens were in terrible shape. It might be better in mid season... but this course was ridiculously over-priced and over-rated. For a good solid time with golf friends... stay away from this golf course. read more

Took customers for the second time. We really enjoyed it the first time we played it two years ago but not so much today. Paid $105 a person and the club pro had an attitude before we even left the club house. My customer asked about range ball and the pro acted like it was an inconvenience to tell him that they were on the range. Played in front of the Sunday Shoot-out but quickly caught the group of college women golfers. Play was extremely slow. After 13 holes, the women and their coach decided it would be okay to play a seven-some. After playing behind them for 3 holes and waiting on the 16th tee for 22 minutes, two cart boys came out. they radioed in that there was a seven-some on the course. they told me that this wasn't allowed and went up to split the group. The group went to the next tee and the pro showed up and removed them from the course. Finally!!!! The pro road back to us and informed us of what had transpired. when I told him that it was too late, he sarcasticly stated "it's never too late" and rode off. His attitude is definitely an issue. When I went into the club house after the round to discuss the issue, he was nowhere to be found. Customer service isn't their strong suit. We love the course, but it may be a long time before we return. read more

Absolutely incredible golf course. If you are looking for a challenge, and a relaxing day then Dormie Club is the place for you! Unfortunately, they are aerating the greens on June 23, 2014, but it will be back up and running in about three weeks. No complaints about this course, I would definitely rather play here than No. 2. Yeah there isn't a fancy clubhouse or some amenities, but this place is the most incredible golf I've ever played. Will 100% be back on my next vacation to Pinehurst, can't wait!!!!! read more

Was supposed to play Dormie Club today. Had a 7:48 tee time. The guy to open the shop arrived at 8 am and offers no apologies. He just started in with "our first tee time is 8am and no carts today, you have to walk". How about a phone call the day before to advise?? He admitted he saw the tee time in there system. If your first tee time is 8 am, why are you arriving at 8am?? I have played here before and the service has always been subpar. There are many great courses in Pinehurst area, so pick somewhere else to go. I would suggest Talamore. They understand customer service!! Will never go back to Dormie and they will probably be out of business if that level of service continues... read more

Our group has been visiting Pinehurst for 20 years on our annual spring trip and this year will be our third at Dormie. Great layout and only due to a change in the business model of this club are the public even able to play it. Great course to take a caddie or walk. Before anything else, I want to say I liked the track as did the rest of the group. The staff experience, however, was without a doubt the worst I've ever experienced. Showed up 1/2 hour before our tee time to find locked gates. We were first tee and it wasn't a huge deal but we did drive around a while trying to find another entrance. Finally returned to the mapped address 10 minutes later to find the gate now open. Then it took about 1/2 hour to check in 12 golfers..I'm not sure it was the system or operator, but really took a long time. After our first round, we enter the clubhouse to get something to eat before our afternoon replay round only to be told there was no food available for purchase. Questioned how that was possible, and asked the closest place to get a quick sandwich only to have the rocket scientist tell us she had no idea. We drive around in the middle of bum$#@% and find a subway about 10 miles away, and load up sandwiches for the entire 12. Upon our return, we find the group that had finished RIGHT AFTER us enjoying their Dormie made sandwiches. It turns out the rocket scientist who told us nothing was available to eat was also in charge of opening the kitchen, yet seemed to forget to mention that was also part of her duties and that sandwiches would be available within minutes. From that point forward her nickname was "hammers", because she clearly was as dumb as a bag of hammers. When voicing our displeasure about the significant inconvenience, we then got the pleasure of speaking to what I can only assume to be the general manager. He was not only not sympathetic but rude an offensive. Given the lack of play we saw as well as those described in some of the other comments, I can only assume the unacceptable customer services is probably going to put this good track out of business. read more

Dormie was in good condition, despite the fact that it had been rainy early on in the week. It was very disappointing that the quality of the staff inside didn't match the layout. The gentleman working inside, who claimed to be the "manager" was incredibly disrespectful. He treated our group very unprofessionally and was not the least bit welcoming. His attitude towards the guys who were playing was hard to believe. Although, the majority of the 9 players we had enjoyed the course, there is absolutely no way I would give money to this place ever again. Of the hundreds of times I've played golf, in places all around the world, I have never had a worse experience with a professional in the shop. Stay away. read more

As a local who has played Dormie Club many times, the range of comments about the experience are both right and wrong. Some observers don't seem to distinguish between the course, the amenities, and the quality of the customer service. The observations about questionable customer service are historically accurate, but don't reflect the current state of affairs with the new ownership that took over in 2018. There is a new approach at DC that is as good as any in the area. As to the non-golf course facilities, the are best described as rustic. A modest clubhouse with rocking chairs overlooking the 18th hole is about it. If you are looking for a resort experience, you will be disappointed. But you if you looking for a great golf experience, this is the place. One of the best quartets of par threes anywhere, ranging from 100 to 240 yards (play the tees that fit your game). Par fours that offer a bunch of ways to play them, including close to the ground. Generally generous fairways that give the opportunity to take different routes to the green. Of course a hole or two that won't fit everyone's eye (number 10 comes to mind for me). Really hard holes tee to green, with gentle greens and short approaches to mulitiered mogel fields. And not a house to be seen on the course. In short, the golf is challeging, fun, hard. The kind of course you could play everyday and not get bored. read more

Need a new understanding of "customer service" as all we received was incompetence, would highly recommend changing the golf pro if you want a future without foreclosure. We booked a golf package to enjoy multiple courses in the area. We showed up for a tee time 1 hour early to find out that they overbooked and ran out carts. So we waited past our tee time 40 minutes to realize we won't get a round in as are only option was now to walk. So we asked what they could do for the massive inconvenience they have caused and obvious disappointment and the answer was nothing and that is wasn't their fault. So not only did they penalize us as the customers for nothing within our control but they refused to rectify the situation. The simply reality was the minute we passed the tee time they should have refunded our money and said play free as many holes as you can and we'd love to have you back. Is it really that hard? Apparently for this pro and course common sense and courtesy for your customers isn't par. read more

This golf course is great. The course was designed by Coore and Crenshaw to be as many of the courses in Pinehurst were originally built to incorporate the natural sand base landscape into the course. So because of this I think some people go there and get disappointed. There are no paved cart paths, no big club house just a great test of golf with beautiful natural views. If your looking for a good test of golf and a course with great line and tones of natural elevation changes then play there. If you need a big club house or you don't understand what it was intended to be then don't. Golf course in the Pinehurst area are better conditioned than most course in the country. read more

I would not play this course again if offered for free. Played on March 3rd. Had to use cart path only. Could not find cart paths on most holes and the ones we did find were like mud roller coasters. Holes were difficult to identify. Signage was very poor. No rakes in the bunkers or on our carts. Could not wait to finish round and leave. read more

This course is a classic Coore & Crenshaw design, so if you have played there courses before I would definitely recommend Dormie Club. The layout was very pristine, but the greens were roughed up. They aerated the course one month ago, and the greens have recovered well, but a lot of spike marks are noticeable on the greens. It is still bearable, and the greens rolled pretty smooth. Definitely worth the play, but a little overpriced in my opinion. read more

Excellent if you're a golfer. They put all the money in the course not in the fancy clubhouse as a lot of courses do. I really recommend getting at least a forecaddie for your round. I found everyone very friendly and accommodating. It is my new no.1 in N.C. right behind Tobacco Road. read more

Well Crenshaw has done it again. I've only played 2 of his courses and both have been total disasters distance wise. Sugarloaf Mtn. in Florida is no longer open. Come on Ben 5 par 4's under 300 yards from the white tees and a par 5 at 601 that plays longer than that. We played on Wed. 5/20/2015. and it took us 5 and 1/2 hours to play. We waited on every shot and spent time on the tee boxes with the foursome ahead of us. Need to get some rangers out there for sure. I would not play it again for sure. read more
