Great place to relax and enjoy good beers!

Great place in Decatur! Tasted a variety of beers & found one I really liked and I'm not a beer person. The band playing on Sunday afternoon was good. Bartender, Matt, was great! Will definitely recommend and revisit when I'm in my hometown again. Impressed by the cleanliness of the establishment and obviously well cared for by those who work there. A great place to go for all ages!

Solid new craft microbrewery in Decatur! I'm impressed with the decor and the quality of beer. My experience with new breweries has been that they need a while to get the quality up to snuff, but I visited this place the week they opened and was blown away by what was on tap. While they don't have a kitchen, they did have a food truck onsite which was a huge plus.

There are rules that have to be followed for the safety of all. This is a place for grown folks that just want to get together and chill without a couch. There is no booze or a kitchen but they did have snacks and drinks for sale...and they allow food order/delivery. When we arrived were greeted immediately and all expectations were conveyed upon entry. We signed a waiver and received instructions and tips on how to throw and play the games. We were given opportunity to ask questions and were able to call for referee assistance to address the issues of great competition. It was all fun and laughter as the professionals threw their axes in the lane next to us. Did you know there is an ax throwing league? We'll, there is but they didn't need a handicap like in bowling so I didn't qualify. Anyway, we came out for my sons 30th birthday and I promise, I let him win in honor of his special day. There were four of us in our group and I scored a consistent zero so the others wouldn't feel intimidated. We played several games that included the ax of different sizes and ninja stars...or whatever they are called. The stars, of course, was my favorite because I was able to get them to stick to the board more often. If you've never thrown an ax before, you should this. It's competitive for sure and a good workout for the arms, back and core...and it's a lot of fun, even when you consistently score low numbers. I had a blast and we'll be coming back sure. Thumbs up to Real Axe Throwing of Springfield, the city of Springfield and the entrepreneurs that keep bringing us fun things to do in Central Illinois. Real Axe Throwing of Springfield puts Springfield on the map.

Even though it completely destroyed the building, it wasn't the end. This story inspired us to come to check it out. After poking around in Decatur awhile, we came for the awesome beer. It's kind of a ways to get to Assumption, on some lonely highway. The restaurant in town, DJ's has some of this on tap. Because this place is only open Fridays and Saturdays, you can go there when the brewery is closed. The brewery was open though. It's about $5 a pint. They have a pretty large variety. I had the 1905 Citra. This is an IPA, and wasn't crazy hoppy. Has no food except maybe chips. They however allow customers to bring in food from the restaurants around here. Good beer. It's also a good story and gives this rinky dink town of Assumption something to be proud of. This is worth a drive to check out what they have become even with a setback.

Just outside Assumption, Illinois is Cypress Grove Farm, where "belties" - a traditional Scottish…read morebreed of beef cattle properly called the Belted Galloway - are raised. Cypress Grove has a farm store as well, and as of 2019, a side business as a brewery. A bit of digging through online newspaper articles showed that the owners were partners in the original iteration of 1905 Brewing Company in town, but left the partnership when that bar burned down in 2019. Now they make beer out on their farm, offering it by the cup, crowler, and growler in their farm store. Plenty of picnic tables and lawn chairs were spread under large oak trees on the lawn. They have food trucks on the premises on select weekends; for our visit, just brats and chips were available, plus meat and cheese from the farm store. Guests are warmly greeted, and welcome to stroll around the property to see the fields and cattle. During our COVID-era visit, masks were worn indoors and parties were safely distanced outside. The beers we tried were excellent, including an Irish Red, a "Trials and Tritical-ations" experimental pale ale, and a couple sours. We took home some crowlers, including a "Pork Snout Milk Stout" which really is infused with pork... interesting, but not for me! Cypress Grove was definitely worth driving a few miles off our planned trek through Christian County. It's a lovely setting with friendly folks and great brews.

Thankfully we still were able to get one cider, and they had a selection of other beers. The cider was tart and refreshing, and I really like the berry mocktail, which had ginger beer, and a mix of berries in it. As for food, the Nashville hot chicken sandwich came with a lot of heat which was great. I got the dry rub version, which is spicer than the saucy version. The horseshoe sandwich is a local favorite, which is an open faced sandwich with sliced bread topped with meat (we got the angus beef), fries, and cheese sauce. It was quite heavy and creamy because of all the sauce. Overall we enjoyed our meal and our server was very friendly, although service was on the slower side.

The building is beautiful, the location is perfect, and we thought, "Hey, maybe those bad reviews were just people having a bad day." Spoiler alert: they were not. Service started strong. We were seated right away, and they even brought coloring pages for our kids -- a nice touch that gave us false hope. Then the food arrived, and it was like watching a plot twist in a bad movie. I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Pony Shoe. It came out looking like someone microwaved a bag of frozen chicken tenders and tossed them in buffalo sauce for moral support. The cheese sauce might have been homemade -- it was grainy enough to make me believe someone whisked it themselves -- but there was barely any. Also, who hides the cheese under the fries? That's the star of the show! I had to beg for more, and even then it arrived lukewarm, much like my excitement for the meal. My wife ordered the Pork Schnitzel with "spaetzle." Except it wasn't schnitzel; it was a pork cutlet that had clearly seen the inside of a freezer longer than most people's leftovers. And the "spaetzle"? Nope. Straight-up spaghetti noodles. The mushroom sauce tasted like it came straight from a can labeled Cream of Disappointment. Two of the kids got cheese pizza -- or as I like to call it, "Frozen Circle of Regret." My son's "chips" were somehow both soggy and chewy, a texture I didn't even know existed. Frying them until they're crunchy shouldn't be rocket science, but here we are. Everything was bland, flavorless, and missing any sign of seasoning. The best dish of the entire meal? My daughter's burger on her Pony Shoe -- mostly because it resembled real food. And just to add a little flair, nearly every plate was dusted with dried parsley. Because, of course, nothing says fine dining like sprinkling dried parsley on frozen food. This place has serious potential -- it's got the space, the charm, and the perfect downtown vibe. But if your secret ingredient is "frozen," no amount of parsley is going to save you.
