The Trek 520s were a very nice bike for what we were doing. Water proof panniers for our gear was a nice free bonus. Lodging selections were perfect and they were flexible with our preferences. Our transport to the starting point was great. The not so good: One of bikes suffered a front brake mechanical leaving us to unhook the front brake and complete most of the ride without a front brake. Not really the fault of West Ireland Cycling, as it checked out fine before we left. The staff did follow up with us and make every effort to accommodate us - so this really isn't that bad or their fault. Overall, we would use WIC over and over again.

I emailed the shop a few weeks back to ask about availability and John promptly responded and was so helpful! We made it to the shop today and John had two bikes and a child seat waiting for us. He helped us find a nice route to ride and we had a great time. The shop is a really quick walk from Eyre Square too. I would definitely recommend renting bikes from there during your stay in Galway!

My brother, 14 yo niece and I took a 2hour surf lesson with Bens in Lahinch on a whim in July 2014…read more It was amazing, mostly due to great attitude of the staff, a guy called Mike who sorted us out and the owner Ben who gave us the lesson. He is the most highly qualified instructor (level 3?) and vowed, he told us, to only let his instructors have a maximum 6 students at a time, with smaller groups the norm. He was able to give us instant feedback on every single wave we tried (and sometimes succeeded) to catch. We were all novices, though comfortable in the water, but made good progress, I'm convinced because of his instruction. DONT try surfing without first getting a lesson, as there is a lot that is counter-intuitive to us beginners. Ben himself is an absolute gent, good crack, and a very clear instructor. They also give instruction all the way up to advanced level, are open year-round, and he is expanding this year having bought a new premises to move into right beside the beach. I cant think of anything negative to say. The beach itself is very safe, with shallow waters that go out for hundreds of metres, professional lifeguards on duty, and a friendly vibe from all the other surfers and schools around. Non surfers, wives, kids, can enjoy the beach too while you are 50 metres away paddling on your board. Bens also does bike rentals, rock climbing and kayaking and this part of county Clare is perfect for those types of activity. Can't recommend this guy and his business highly enough.

That's important to me because last year, I had a disappointing experience with a different bike rental shop in Westport that only had a hard, thin type of seat that left bruises because it failed to distribute my weight across a wide enough area, leaving me hesitant to plan any other bicycling adventure vacations for a long time. I'm glad I eventually got over that negative experience and gave this much better business a try. It was everything the other experience should have been. Because of the size-inclusive bikes offered at Rothaí Inis Oírr, my husband and I got to see a shipwreck, a lighthouse, a castle, and a fort. Maps, helmets, and route advice were provided. We watched a dolphin splash fishing boats, and rode through a maze of beautiful hand-stacked rock walls to a glaciokarst landscape overlooking the ocean. It was so beautiful and magical. Incidentally, the bike shop's inclusiveness covered such an expansive range that they were also able to fit my husband's unusually long legs onto a bike that wouldn't hurt his posture. They had children's sizes, and adult bikes with accommodations for carrying kids too young to ride their own. They clearly put a lot of thought into making sure everyone could join in the fun. I was beyond impressed and intend to recommend this business to all of my friends.

DO THIS WHEN YOU GET TO INISHEER. This was my third trip to Inisheer and my first time renting a…read morebicycle there. It was so, so worth it. Never would I go back here and not do this. For only €10 you can have the bike for the ENTIRE DAY. The horse and carriage rides are €50 and only take you to a few places. The best part about the bike rental is that it's all based on trust. Be a nice person and do your part to keep it this way. You don't have to sign forms, you don't have sign insurance cards. You just show up, ask for a bicycle, hand over €10 euros, and then receive your key to exploring this hauntingly gorgeous island. Without the aid of a bike, it's difficult to see the whole island, as it will take about 1.5 hours just to cover the most popular parts on foot. With the bike, you can race out to the shipwreck and down to the lighthouse in no time. You can feel the glorious breeze against your face, suck in the fresh air, feel your heart pumping -- you can gaze out at the endless stone walls, crumbling castles, verdant pastures and white cottages as you think about just how lucky you are to be experiencing this all. Sure you'll huff and puff up some major hills and feel the burn in your thighs as you press up the incline to O'Brien's castle...but it's all worth it in the name of exploration and inspiration. I highly recommend renting these bikes. And I highly recommend visiting Inisheer. It's peaceful, untouched, soulful and desolate all at the same time.
