While this artist's studio…read moremight have once enjoyed some prominence, it struck us as little more than glorified after-school care...under the eye of a slightly crabby individual who, evidence suggests, has probably been doing this a decade too long. What can we say: at close to $200 for 8 classes, we expected more, especially when said classes are offered for young kids of 6 and 7. When money changes hands, one comes to expect a certain amount of flexibility from the staff and, above all, patience with young, energetic minds that may not immediately fit into rigid routines and methods. We wanted our child exposed to more art, not more rules. Budding artists need to get their hands dirty, to experiment, to try, and to fail. Sorry, but this isn't that place. Onward.

What I really liked about the class was how structured it was and how much they learned about different art techniques. The children also learned about the history of the carousel. The class itself was structured, there were clear expectations and the teacher gave each child individual attention throughout. I was present for most of the classes and I felt that all the children were engaged and excited about their project. I would likely recommend the children's art classes at the Eastside Art Center.

Our…read morecity is lucky to have such a top notch liberal arts school within city limits, which allows for diversity, youth, and innovation to thrive in the area. The school was founded as a coeducational institution in 1877 by Helen Adelia Rowe Metcalf, who sought to increase the accessibility of design education to women. Today, RISD offers bachelor's and master's degree programs across 19 majors and enrolls approximately 2,000 undergraduate and 500 graduate students. The Rhode Island School of Design Museum--which houses the school's art and design collections--is one of the largest college art museums in the United States. The Rhode Island School of Design is affiliated with Brown University, whose campus sits immediately adjacent to RISD's on Providence's College Hill. The two institutions share social and community resources and since 1900 have permitted cross-registration. Together, RISD and Brown offer dual degree programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. As of 2022, RISD alumni have received 10 MacArthur Genius fellowships, five Primetime Emmy Awards, and three Academy Awards. A 2016 analysis of the most successful American artists at auction found that the vast plurality held undergraduate degrees from RISD.

In short, this is the single best place to go gift-shopping in town if you're looking for something really, really special or unique. I've purchased several of those marvelous RISD totes here - they come in fun color combinations and are very attractive. They're a great hostess gift or birthday pressie, and I absolutely love mine. Sure, some of the items are on the pricey side, and there is no parking, but this shop is so lovely that is almost feels as if you're still in the RISD Museum that it's attached to. It's a great place to take out-of-towners for souvenirs or to pick up a gift for someone. Truly.

My friend and I were visiting Providence and Newport for a weekend, she wanted to stop by the shop to see if she could find a nice souvenir. She didn't end up buying anything, but I did. Many of the works inside the store are made by alumni of RISD, including the ceramic sculpture I bought as a souvenir. They have your usual museum gift shop fare, but they also had some exceptional works of various sizes and prices and tastes. I definitely recommend visiting the shop if you're visiting Providence!

An emergency left me in the ER with doctors and nurses asking me whether a small piece of dried yellowish paint was acrylic or oil, artist or other-- I had no idea. The only thing I could think to do was hurry to an art store and ask if they knew. My first stop was Michael's and the glazed over distant look in the employees eyes told me that I was wasting my time there. My brother-in-law shops at Riverside Art so I thought "what the Hell..." After just a few minutes of crumbling, smelling, and diluting they were able, with 100% confidence, to tell me exactly what kind of paint it was. Because of the strange color they were even able to give me a specific brand. Not too bad when all I brought them was a piece of dried paint and a whole lot of anxiety. They took a genuine interest in my problem and did the best they could to help me-- for that I am very appreciative and have been recommending them to everyone who asks me about art or framing.

Very disappointed recently - paid for a custom mounting of a canvas print - I gave careful instructions on my request - when i went to pick it up, I found that the image on the print was bent around the edges of the underlying frame. The painted image just ends in space - When I mentioned this, the young lady was dismissive - " these things get stretched when they get mounted" - Understood. So they actually mounted it on a framework that was too small. Too bad for me. I don't think it is reparable. I dont mind if mistakes are made. Just be respectful.
