Indian saris, fresh durian (!), small appliances like rice cookers and of course, every spice, vegetable, seafood you associate with anything Asian. Dong Xuan mostly specializes in Viet items, but make sure to shop around to compare prices. We shopped for ingredients to make Filipino pansit and they have everything here. Sometimes called Berlin's 'Vietnamese mall', the Dong Xuan Center has been visited by practically everyone in Berlin. There are even guide tours! The internet had promised us that this compound of warehouses would fulfill all of our Asian food needs on the cheap. As Seattleites, we are used to a high level of Thai and Vietnamese food and Germany's attempts (although infinitely better than when we arrived in 2007) are generally disappointing. Unfortunately we weren't blow away by the produce on offer or prices, but there were some crazy unusual sights and products. Need a spiked hat? They have it. Beach towel with a tiger? Hell yeah. Want to see a giant carp butchered in front of you? But, of course. A meal of pho after a day of shopping was also only partially satisfying. An over-sized bowl was only 6 euros and had a few tasty add-ins, but even-worse-than-usual service and an odd beef didn't do it for me. Tips for Visiting: Dress warm in winter. Beware the crowds. Due to some rough handling by AA baggage tossers, one of our luggage got damaged on our flight into Berlin, lost a wheel and cracked the opposite corner. Launched yelp and this turned up when I searched for "cheap luggage". With this unexpected expense we only allocated around 120 € to spend on a replacement. I was so glad that prices throughout the first 2 warehouses we looked into where bargains. The 28" to 30" hard case luggages were only going for €25 to €50. At those prices, I don't have to worry if it doesn't hold-up any better than the one we replaced. We ended up with a descent looking 28" hard case w/ built-in locks (too bad they're not TSA locks). Priced low enough that my wife bought a nice hand bag, 2 x iPhone and iPad cases using some of the leftover money. The quality and build I think is on par to any China made products currently offered at Amazon or eBay but priced 25% to 50% lower. Having a weaker euro to the dollar certainly helped lower the prices. read more

I had the traditional pho at this place, and it came out very fast and had a nice flavor. To my own disappointment, I went a liiiittle overboard with the red chile peppers and the sriracha, so after those flavors soaked in, I had a hard time sipping the fiery broth. But before then, the soup was very good. Not the absolute best pho I've had in my life, but worth a stop! I also had a mangosaft (mango juice), which was just the thing I needed to balance the spice in my mouth. I assume it would be delicious without your mouth on fire, but I'll have to go back to find out. read more

The Asian cultural and commercial center "Dong Xuan Center" is probably the largest Asian supermarket in Berlin. The center consists of three large halls, which are located on a approximately 88,000 square meters large industrial terrain where over 170 dealers offer a variety of Asian products (textiles, footwear, fashion, toys) for sale. Certainly an interesting place, but each hall basically has the same sorts of things. So after wandering through a few you get the general idea. I guess I"m more curious about how this place is run and the economics of the stalls and different halls than I ever was in buying anything here. But certainly worth checking out if you are looking for some inexpensive cloths or other house hold items. The one grocery I looked through was pretty standard for fired, caned, and frozen items as far as asian markets go. The produce was ok, but as a wet market it wasn't really that good. However, the restaurant in hall 3 was a treat. Some very good Bun Cha is to be had at this place. I'll have to see if I can post a review on that alone as to me it is pretty separate issue regarding the food and the market in general. read more

3 giant halls of cheap goods just like a market in Vietnam. All kinds of kitschy knicknacks. There is a huge shop that sells only plastic flowers. You can't help be ask yourself repeatedly who buys these stuff ? We had Banh Cuon at one of the outdoor stall for snack. It wasn't as good as the ones in Vietnam but at least it is made fresh. Fun place to spend an hour and imagine yourself visiting Vietnam for just a minute. read more

Big asian market selling wide range of goods, mainly vietnamise shops. Don't expect high end good , be prepared to bargain as majority of goods don't have price tag. Nice restaurants to have authentic vietnamise food. read more

Dear Berlin Tourist Board this should be on your list! There is a very large Vietnamese community and this is where they come to buy and dine. Let's call it shabby chic to be polite but the atmosphere sold it to me. We went to a Vietnamese Restaurant and enjoyed the food plus we bought some food as it is much cheaper than buying it in town. Sometimes you need to visit to a place several times before you get a real feel for it. This is one of those places for me. I have been here many times, drawn by my love for unknown (to me anyway) types of food. I would come here and buy a selection of things that I'd never seen before, bring them home and cook something. This place is huge, 7 or so warehouses full of shops, including the food shops (the main reason for my visit), although it is also interesting to see the large East Berlin Vietnamese community going about their business and to try out some Vietnamese home cooking in the restaurants.The surrounding area is unattractive, but interesting to see if you have never been to this part of town and you like urban adventure. You can buy clothes and there are also hardware shops but on the whole the quality is not very good, even tacky. In some of the shops the owners like to follow you around like you are a thief, you may be thinking that perhaps I look like a thief, I assure you neither I or those with me do. If you have a penchant for Viet pop there are also one or two music shops. The food shops vary in price, content and quality so it is a good idea to shop around before settling on something. The shops here are more expensive compared to other Asian shops I use in Berlin and to be honest I have no idea why, since the places I normally go will no-doubt pay higher rents. Go here if you want an adventure, eat some barbecue pork and buy some strange fruit. I have had my fill now and will only go there if I can't get what I want somewhere else. read more
