Truly Scrummy - Yummy Brie, bacon and cranberry panini

    Truly Scrummy

So with half an hour to kill before a hair appointment, I popped in to Truly Scrummy for a brew and…read morea bite. Boasting locally sourced food and home baked cakes, scones & tray bakes, it was a fair bet that I was going to like the place, and I wasn't disappointed. I was greeted warmly when I came in, I ordered tea and a toasted teacake and was invited to take a seat. There are 8 tables with 3-4 seats at each, so a decent amount of space. It's completely open plan so you can see the food prep & cooking area, I watched the two chefs chopping veg and putting in a big pot on the stove, and preparing the pastry cases for some kind of quiche or flan, and the smells were just delicious! My tea arrived in a teapot with a separate pot of milk, which always makes me happy as I'm dead fussy about my brew. My teacake was large and generously buttered which, again, pushed my happiness buttons. As I supped I eyed the scrummy looking cakes and tray bakes under the glass domes, slightly gutted that I didn't have time to indulge today. Perusing the menu it looks full of delights, from breakfast staples with a local emphasis (like the griddled dry cured yorkshire bacon sandwich, or the local pork sausage sandwich) to paninis, jacket potatoes, wraps, soups and much more. The loss of one star comes purely from a pricing front. £4.20 for a bacon sandwich or £6.80 for a panini is just a touch over the limits for me. Perhaps that's a little unfair as you can clearly see (literally!) the care and attention that goes into preparing the food. Who knows, perhaps when I come back and eat more, and I definitely will be back, I might eat them and decide the quality justifies it, but until then, four stars it is.

The cakes are really delicious and generously portioned and the savoury food is nice too, although a bit pricey. The surroundings are so beautiful, gorgeous architecture and if its a nice day you can sit outside on one of the tables on the patio area, surrounded by lovely flowers and with a view of the Abbey over the road. So come for an afternoon in lovely Kirkstall and refresh yourself at the Gatehouse!

Sunday is a good day to call in, as they feature a roast dinner, so we figured we'd try it out. The venue is amazing, nicely spaced tables and two beautifully restored rooms. I noted the menu was small but perfectly formed. My wife and son had grilled sandwiches and he managed to wolf down his very tasty looking lemon drizzle cake before his chicken and chorizo wrap arrived. I opted for the roast beef and it was a good choice. Very slow roasted brisket arrived in a long chunky strip, accompanied with mashed swede, roast potatoes, mange tout and a very yummy Yorkshire. The gravy was fantastic, no doubt thanks to all that slow roasting and I think it'll not be long before we return. Special mention of the pistachio cake, sadly not available today, but if it's on then grab a slice...you won't be disappointed.

    Far Headingley

This is a relatively new spot in Headingley town, and one that I should really frequent more. In…read morefact, one that I would recommend to even non-locals to LS6, as my experience here was dandy and it's not somewhere you'd think to go - so allow me to place it in your mind thoughts for future brunching. I'd spotted them crop up on Yelp a few months back, and had bookmarked them in my head. I love brunch, and I don't know of many places in Leeds that serve it, so it had to be visited. The chap and I made the trip up a few weeks ago on one semi-sunny Sunday, a short but pleasant constitutional from my house, and wandered in. Being as the windows are single pane, and the kitchen gets hot inside, the windows were completely steamed up and it was quite warm inside. That mattered not, as they have a few seats al fresco, which still feels like a holiday to me, even if Otley road is busying away right next to you. It afforded us the opportunity to watch a plucky crow investigate a bin whilst we waited for our order, which is an added bonus. (Not one I can promise you'll have when you visit, mind.) I'm not sure if I mentioned how much I love crows, but that's for another piece of writing. I ordered a coffee, cherry cola of the Fentimans variety (the best one) and the French toast with bacon and maple syrup. The chap had eggs, although I'm sure if I recall correctly, he was tempted by a breakfast burrito. The food arrived fairly quickly, and I've nothing but praise for my French toast. It was as eggy as you like, crispy in some places, soggy in others, and had a plentiful pot of syrup to accompany. The bacon was perhaps a little too crispy for my liking - I've one or two fillings that I always fear breaking - but of course, I ate it all up. I'll just ask for it a little softer next time. You can partake of more English style eats here, bacon sandwiches and the like, but really it's all about the brunch. And with cushions, magazines, papers, and other cosy accoutrements inside, I can see this being a warming little spot come the colder weather. Until then, soak up that sun, and grab an afternoon treat!
