Absolute 5 star experience here. We entered right at they opened at 11 on a Saturday. I told our…read moresever that I had an event coming up at noon so we'd be ordering right away, and by golly, the staff took care of us. Drinks, followed by poutine 5 minutes later, then food about 10 minutes after that. We were all done within 30 minutes! The food was fantastic, too. Delicious poutine, with oozy gooey squeaky cheese curds. I had the smoked fish salad; it had the right amounts of everything and felt like a distinctly Duluth dish. My husband had the fish and chips. I had a bite of his fish, and it was perfect, with great batter and flavor. I would happily come here again on a visit. I can see why this is a city institution.

Intrigued by their homemade wild rice burgers, we decided to visit Fitger's Brewhouse for a dinner…read morewhile in Duluth. When we arrived a bit after 7PM, we had quite some trouble finding parking and ended up having to park a couple of blocks away after circling for 20 minutes. Walking in, the place wasn't too busy, perhaps 50% capacity. We were interested in ordering the fried cheese curds, but the server told us they weren't battered in house, so we passed on them. Smoked Fish Salad (Market Price, $18.99) - This is a pretty salad - all ingredients are arranged in rows along the dish. Mixing things together is a bit of a pain, but I appreciate the dressing on the side to add to preference. The dressing is an interesting blend of mayo and other ingredients, perhaps BBQ sauce, that make it slightly tangy and very sweet. There's an undertone of smokiness throughout, which tastes somewhat like liquid smoke rather than the dressing actually being smoked. It is on the sweeter side of dressings. Other than greens, there's a row of wild rice, dark and snappy, completely broken cultivated rice. There's also a bit of house smoked trout, nice and smoky. (4/5) Classic Wild Rice Burger ($16.99) - This is one of the tallest burgers I've seen in quite a while, mostly due to the inclusion of fresh vegetables including onion and tomato, and alfalfa sprouts. For some reason instead of using larger tomatoes, they use small roma tomatoes, including three small slices. They also used red onion that's chopped into a variety of different shapes instead of whole slices. It's really strange - I guess this saves on cost? Unfortunately smaller pieces means things fall out while eating. The patty is larger than the bun. It has plenty of broken wild rice bits giving some additional crunch and that signature wild rice taste. It's charred on the griddle well and it keeps its structure, not falling apart or becoming mushy at any point. I love how it's distinctively a rice burger and doesn't try to be a meat substitute. Two slices of American cheese are melted on top that gives some fattiness to the dish. The bun is toasted without butter and there's a flavorful garlic mayo spread on the top. It would be nice if they had also applied the sauce to the bottom bun as I found the patty to not have enough moisture or fat incorporated. The burger comes with some thin commercial fries. There aren't any issues with the level of fry and they are otherwise unremarkable. (4/5) Fitger's Brewhouse serves some solid good old fashioned Midwestern American food. Not much else to say. We're in Duluth, MN for a few days and we were looking for some inexpensive food for dinner. I…read morewent online and found Bulldog Pizza and Grill up by the UMD campus in Duluth, MN. It was a large place, a tad cold (but that's ok!) and not busy. We ordered a Swiss Mushroom burger, a Rueben Sandwich and Onion rings. The burger came with seasoned fries that were excellent! Crispy, tasty perfection! We couldn't say enough good things about those fries!! My husband enjoyed the burger quite a lot too. I had the Rueben which was cooked just right with dressing on the side ( SO mush less messy!). It tasted great! The Onion Rings we're done to a tee too. My husband and I have both been restaurant cooks and we're picky when it comes to how our food is cooked. Bulldog did it absolutely PERFECT in our books! Our waitress was a sweet college girl and very friendly and chatty. She was happy to hear that I'd found them on the web and we were from out of town. When you're in Duluth, MN and want a really good Burger, Sandwich. YUMMY fries and O rings, for a decent price, head to Bulldog Pizza and Grill up by the UMD Campus. A place with a great staff and really good food.

We ordered the cheese bread to start and it was delicious, I like that they serve the marinara dipping sauce hot. We got the chicken Caesar salad to share, the chicken was seasoned perfectly and juicy, they have a great Caesar dressing. We ordered the house pizza to share, it has tons of cheese!! The seasoning was good, also had a perfect sauce ratio with the amount of cheese they put on it. Definitely is a go to spot if you are looking for a sit down pizza spot!

Set in an old steel foundry, Clyde Iron Works is a restaurant with a modern menu full of home made,…read morehearty fare. The space is gigantic, easily dwarfing the size of most restaurants, with an open floor and kitchen that seat what seems to be far more guests than they'd ever hope to serve, not to mention an entire balcony second floor with even more seating. The bottom dining area is clean and modern, while the balcony retains a lot of the original flooring and walls. It's a really interesting dichotomy and I wish there was a museum or something inside to really go deep into the history of the building. Fried Ravioli ($14) - I ordered this hoping to get a taste of St. Louis-style T-ravs that I've been missing for a couple of years, but these turned out to be chunkier renditions. The 5 pieces included are large, far larger than normal ravioli, perhaps 3 inches per side, stuffed, breaded, and fried. The deep frying gives an aggressive herb crust, studded with Italian spices and herbs. Rather than the more traditional method of cutting ravioli squares out of larger sheets of dough, these seem to be dough sheets stuffed and folded over like empanadas. While frying, some puff up like pita bread, with the air remaining inside due to the impermeable exterior. The interior is a cheese and Italian sausage filling, mixed in a balanced fashion so neither component overpowers the other. It gives a slightly spicy warming sensation, while remaining tender and stretchy via the cheese. The ravioli are served with a small cup of marinara. It's warm and bright, herbal with a good balance of flavors between the acidity, sweetness, saltiness, and umami. (5/5) Clyde Rueben Sandwich ($18), Sub Onion Rings (+$3) - The sandwich includes a large pile of shaved pastrami that's fatty and tender, and well spiced. Clearly a lot of care was spent smoking this meat. It's topped with a somewhat funky, fermented gochujang enhanced kimchi, which is mixed with a strongly tangy sauerkraut. The flavors are clearly there, but complementary with the pastrami instead of being overwhelming as with some other places. It's all brought together with a slice of melted cheese and some toasted rye. We subbed onion rings for this one, which according to the menu should cost $4 extra, but we were only charged $3. These are THICK onion rings, both in height and also somehow width. I'm talking almost an inch in width. I've never seen an onion ring this size before! And it's delicious. Full-bodied allium flavor, slight sweetness, and a cornflake enhanced breading that somehow sticks on and stays on. It's only lightly seasoned, so they give either blue cheese or ranch to dip in. We went with the ranch, which seems to be made in house, full flavored with a bit of the base buttermilk tanginess still in play. (5/5) Porketta, Sub Grilled Vegetables ($18) - The sandwich is pretty simple, with cheese melted on a pile of pulled porketta, all in a soft and almost pillowy bun, grilled yet no hint of crunch. The bun is completely soft and acts like a sponge soaking up the pork juices and the jus. The pork is extremely flavorful, full of braising spices, garlicky and abounding with warming fennel savoriness. The porketta comes with a small bowl of jus. It's not the best; the pork broth is thin and watery, lacking salt, completely missing the point of a dipping jus that should be concentrated in flavor and very salty. Perhaps this is just a characteristic of Iron Range Porketta since I'm not that familiar with this dish. It's not very flavorful, although there is a strange aftertaste that I can't quite describe. I'm not sure what spices make the rather unpleasant taste. One of the few items not homemade are the fries, which is one of the reasons I decided to go with the veggies. It's an awesome choice to have grilled veggies as an option as a first place - most other places have either fried food or boring salad as a side. The grilled veggies are definitely a thoughtful addition. In this case, they are flash grilled on a flat top with oil, then peppered liberally with salt and black pepper. The pieces all still retain the fresh vegetable crisp while having some char on the sides. I actually liked the grilled veggies more than the sandwich! (4/5) I found it funny reading all the reviews complaining about portion size! We got one app and two entrees and were almost full eating only the app. Living in Seattle has really changed my ideas about portion sizes! Clyde Iron Works certainly serves some excellent food. FOOD: I got a salad which was a bit small for my liking but was more eventful than other salads. I also had their beer flight which was very enjoyable with generous pours. SERVICE: we waited about 15 minutes since we were a large group (7+) but the service was great, friendly, and delivered a great experience. PARKING: seems ample enough in their lot.
