Mr. Bahamondes, the previous owner of the restaurant, brought the hotdog from NY to Chile. 'Completo' means complete. This is a pretty ordinary hotdog in a very tasty bun with everything on it. My wife got the Italian: loads of mayo, avocado and tomato. Green, white and red -- the colors of the Italian flag . I had an individual pizza with cheese, black olives and a ton of anchovies. Super tasty. El Portal is fast, inexpensive and the portions are huge. As a Chilean friend used to say, bueno, barato y 'bundante. (Good, inexpensive and 'bundant). Every locale on the ground floor of this building on Plaza de Armas competes with their own completo and everyone claims to have the best. The helpful lady at the museum advised that Ravera, the one on the far right, is the best. And maybe it is. Just be sure to get a completo while you're in Santiago -- it's a cultural experience.

The Cazuela de Ave (Chicken Soup) was warm and comforting. The chicken was a little bit dry, but the soup came in a big portion with lots of toasty bread and it was worth the 2500CLP ($3.70). The location is convenient as it is right in Plaza Italia and right next to the Baquedano metro station! Not bad if you're in the area and you need a quick and comforting bite!

Unfortunately, last year they were literally forced out of their restaurant after the municipality decided to build the line 6 metro. They gave them the date they had to leave, and that date came and went while those from San Remo fought to stay. Unfortunately, the municipality won and as the faithful San Remos clients surrounded the restaurant, security started taking tables, chairs and kitchen supplies to the street. This story has a happy ending. A few months later they reopened in this new spot and their clients followed. San Remo has only 5 dishes but boy do they make them well! They are known for having the best arrollado in Santiago (a traditional chilean dish of roasted pig wrapped in pig skin and slowly cooked). Many of my Chilean friends have deemed the San Remo arrollado as a "superior" dish. It is served with a choice of french fries, mashed potatoes or boiled potatoes. They serve national beers and some international such as Estrella from Spain. Keep in mind it is closed at 4pm and reopens from 8pm-12am and not open on the weekends.
