Rogers Park Off-Leash Dog Park - Strawberries in the community garden!

Rogers Park Off-Leash Dog Park

Cute little dog park! Came here one morning with my boyfriend so we could let his dogs burn some…read moreenergy. We were kind of confused because there's a smaller park with a playground up top, but then we saw the gate for the dog park which opens to a much larger space. It's not the biggest dog park I've been to, but there's plenty of space for pups to run. Every other owner that was here was really kind and paid attention to what their dog was up to, which isn't always common. Only downside (and I've seen this mentioned in older reviews) is the bag dispensers were empty. A dilemma if you forgot/didn't have your own! Recommend if you're in the area!

But having a new dog in the family and one that behaves and has a disposition that is very different from our other two dogs we wanted to "test" to see how she behaves in wide open spaces. The last thing we want is have a dog that runs off and will not listen on the beach. So we were trying to figure out where some leash free dog parks are. There are quite a few in Tacoma but some of them go onto the woods and chasing a possibly unruly puppy through the trees is not something we wanted to do either. So we kept looking for a leash free park with a very large space but fenced in. The only park that I could come up with was the one in Wapato. Wapato Park is fairly popular and the weekend we decided to go we stumbled across some kind of festival there and all the parking spots were taken and we almost got into an accident with someone backing into us. That was near disaster. So we went home and I researched a bit more and found Rogers Park and say on Yelp that the leash free area was fenced in. This is a park that is not nearly as popular as Wapato as we found out and parking was nice and easy and we had the park pretty much to ourselves for a considerable time. We found out that the puppy, Paris is good at sticking close by to her "sisters" and us so hopefully this success will carry over to the ocean beaches as well. Not only that Rogers park is a lot closer to us than Wapato and it seems like the sleepy vibe is pretty much a constant here. In addition to the leash free area there is playground equipment for kids outside of the dog area as well as a community garden which is really cool. Whenever I feel like the dogs need a little more extra running than the front yard I will definitely slip back over here to give them one here since they enjoyed it quite a bit!

It looks like there are two entries for Blueberry Park on Yelp. One is Charlotte's Blueberry Park…read moreand the other is Blueberry Park. I don't know who generated two separate ones. Maybe the other entry is for the broader park as a whole and maybe this one is just for the blueberries. Who can really say for sure. Maybe somebody wasn't paying any attention and they just made another entry. Anywhoo I really like this park. There are a ton of blueberry bushes everywhere and when they are in season you can really have a good selection of blueberries to pick even if there are a lot of people here doing the same thing. As another Yelper pointed out it's a questionable part of the city and there are homeless and people on drugs that can be problematic to the casual passersby. I encountered somebody...while harmless enough it seemed wanted to promote his religion to me. I can attribute this to the general oddness and randomness that you get in Tacoma even though a lot of these encounters aren't fun at all. 50/50% somebody is doing those things on purpose and another half a chance that they aren't in their right mind. But aside from characters occasionally occupying the park the blueberries are top notch. It's fun to pick them and they are always abundant in flavor.

Boasting 5 different varieties of blueberry over 20 acres, if you're willing to take the time you can end up with quite the bounty! As of today the blueberries have started coming in and there's fruit to pick! Plenty of space for everyone, but it's popular, so come early! There's also a small community garden and playground on site if your kiddos need to burn some energy. Easy street parking. The area looks and feels a bit iffy, but it's perfectly fine during the day.

My three year old enjoyed the playground, as it's different from most layouts of other play structures. It has a sizable basketball court, a nice big, flat, green field, and a great sloping hill that surrounds the field. My immediate thought was that it was a great place to go sledding in the winter! What I was most pleasantly surprised about was the spray park. You push a button and water immediately streams out for about ten minutes. We didn't plan on getting wet, because we weren't planning on coming to this park, but my son HAD to go in. So he went home in wet clothes! I feel like this park is easily overlooked. No one came by in the hour that we were there. I believe it to be a hidden gem. We'll definitely be back.

Great place to see the cherry blossoms as there are several trees that surround the basketball court. There's a playground and a splash park for the kiddos. If you go beyond that there's a walking trail. It's fairly well-maintained gravel and will send you in a nicely sized loop which includes a little lookout area. Based on the garbage I'd say this is a popular place to get up to no good so it's best to keep your head on a swivel.

I was directed to a mobile home park in error. I ended up using Google Maps and was redirected to the next street over. The parking is on a gravel road. There were 3 vehicles with one of them a van where you can tell people resided in. The trail is paved. I saw a few people walking, running and biking. The park is clean. There is a community garden at the opposite end. I saw some cute ducks enjoying the pond. I took advantage of taking pictures of the park, flowers, surroundings. I captured a great picture of the dock with the willow trees. The reflection was perfect! I took a whole bunch of pictures to show off more of this tiny park. On this clear day, you can definitely see the view of the majestic Mt Rainier. Along the trail, I was able to pick a lot of blackberries. Havanna and I had a great time here.

It's a paved trail only about half a mile around, with a nice large pond in the middle. There's ducks and other types of birds here - I noticed quite a few people were here to birdwatch, specifically. Also saw a few people biking and running the loop as well. There's benches around the loop as well as quite a few trashcans. The park itself seemed pretty clean. There's also a cute dock area where you can look out over the pond. On clear days you also get a pretty decent view of Mt. Rainier here, too. My kids are three and one so this loop was a solid spot for us to walk. We did it twice and they were able to watch all the birds, check out different flowers, and loved running around in the grass. We'll return!

However sometimes just staying in around town on the weekends is desired. I always like to see something new still and I haven't been to and exploring Tacoma's city parks is a good way to get that quota met. I haven't been to McCarver Park at all until recently. It is actually a very adorable little park. This park is attached to a school and as a result of that this public park doesn't have the usual general public hours as most of Tacoma's city parks have which is usually approximate dusk to dawn hours. The hours that are open to the public here are when school hours are not in session. So that mean somewhere after 3 pm during the week, weekends and in the summer when school is out most likely. I'm guessing the park serves as a playground for the students of the school when it is in session and the park is closed off to the public for safety reasons. At first it didn't make sense to me but after observing the set up more it makes perfect sense. The location of the school in the Hilltop Neighborhood could be a partial reason as Hilltop can be one of Tacoma's rougher neighborhoods. The park itself is very quaint and has a lot of features that one would hope with a city park. There is lots of playground equipment... some fairly high tech looking. I think I'm the generation that is a bit too old to understand how this equipment works but they have good old fashioned swing sets too. lol The park also has adorable art pieces all over the grounds. There is a community garden nearby that looks like it has it's own gate so I'm guessing the park hours don't apply to that little corner of the park. There is a second garden as well on the other side of the park near the school building and I imagine that is for the students and the school. McCarver Park isn't necessarily a huge park but it is great to have a stroll around and the view isn't too bad either!

The parking lot shares space with a police substation so it feels really safe and everything seems really clean and nicely upkept. The park appears much larger on the map than I have checked out and appears to include a skate park as well. There are tables available to enjoy a picnic, or to simply sit while you watch children enjoy the playground. I did find the spray area to be a little underwhelming, but the playground equipment seemed newer and unique. The pool is a very good reason to come to this location. They are currently doing limited sessions due to lifeguard shortage, but its only 7$ for 2 hours. Best of all the wave pool is heated and feels amazing on a hot day. There are some water squirting things and one of those large buckets that dump water on everyone's heads. Lifejackets are available for use. On the day I visited there was plenty of room for everyone to occupy a table or lounger. It appears that the grassy hill next to the wave pool is a good location to set up and bring your own chairs, blankets, etc. There's a 1 ft wading pool that I mistook for a hot tub and was a little disappointed by, but likely great for smaller children. I also really liked that they have children complete swim tests and give them a bracelet to tell others what areas of the pool they are allowed to be in. My 7 yr old nephew insisted he could swim, but it was nice to have someone official reinforce that he needed to stay with adults or before a certain point.

There's nothing that mentions that you cannot watch without a ticket. It's just a basic swimming pool with some waves in it. I was told I would not be allowed in unless I paid the $10 ticket. This could easily be solved by having a wristband that shows who's watching and who's participating. The lady at the desk was incredibly rude and said no you're wrong. It's two adults you're paying for and I told her again that I just wanted to watch. She said you can't go and watch without a ticket that you have to pay for. Why would I want to pay the same fee as my husband just to go in and sit?
