For a skinny burger - GREAT! Hubs ordered a BBQ bacon burger. Bacon wasn't crisp, but he gobbled it down. Meals came with drinks. Hubs upgraded mine to a bottle of Prosecco. Um.....ooookay! I shared it with a friend and really enjoyed it. Our food came to $34 something with a WHOLE bottle of Prosecco and tall Amber ale. Great value. The bar was lively & packed with locals. They do have adorable signs greeting the dogs and even offering their own dog menu. I do love the fact that they take photos of them and there is hundreds of photos on ceiling of all the dogs that have been inside the bar. A group of us came in for a beer and to just adore the adorable dogs. The staff is so sweet and friendly and I honestly wish I lived locally to come here more often.

My favourite night is Mondays, when Ian Shawcross and his jazz band perform (after 9.30). Ian is a regular at the pub, and we were happy to be there when he celebrated his 25 anniversary of performing. Good selection of well maintained real ales, excellent quality food. Efficient and friendly service, it can get very busy on most nights we have been there so I recommend booking, especially on a Sunday. Despite being a small country pub up a tiny village lane, the car park is usually big enough and if you did not want to drive it would be a £10-15 taxi ride back to Folkestone or the nearest BR station.

It was so good that my wife and I stayed the whole afternoon! It's a little confusing when you get there as there isn't a bar. There are a couple of boards listing the beers and others that they have available and you place your order directly to the staff. They fetch it for you and bring it to your table. You even pay at your table (cards/contactless/etc payments welcome). The offer their drinks is in thirds, halves and pints; the prices reflecting the fractions of a pint. The selection changes regularly and they even have another menu which you can get takeaway cans and bottles from. The landlord is super friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. In the quieter moments he's happy to stand and chat with you about the beers he has on, what he's had in the past and what he might get in the future. The Thomas Tallis Ale House will be a stop for me every time I'm in the area which frankly isn't often enough!

Had scoped out The Old Buttermarket as a dinner location during my 1 night stay in Canterbury…read more Based on my online research I'd planned on ordering the Sausage & Mash... until I saw an order of fish & chips delivered tona table nearby. I was starving after 48 hours of transatlantic travel and sight seeing and that plate of beautiful golden fried haddock spoke to me on a visceral level. The fish was fresh and flakey with just enough batter to let you know it was there. Peas and chips didn't go.to waste either. I paired it with a pint of Camden Hells lager and let's just say I went to bed completely happy. Would highly recommend especially if you're staying at the Cathedral Lodge as I was.
