The price is good, and even the small portions are still sizeable, and we didn't have any issues with the staff at all- they were perfectly nice to us. Really good chips, and crispy batter without anything being oily. However, it is a standard, large chip-shop cafe. Off-season large and empty, in season a great place for a fish-supper, a cup of tea and some respite from the rain and kids. The first thing to point out is that Hen Siop is Welsh for "Old Shop" so this isn't a place to go…read moreto buy chickens, unless you want them in a pie with a bit of mushroom because Hen Siop is in fact a fish and chip shop. From the outside it doesn't look like a typical takeaway as it's constructed from the same stone as every other building in the village, presumably this is some sort of National Park planning requirement. Step inside and you could be in any chip shop anywhere in the country. There are no surprises on the menu, it's all typical chippy fare, and the prices are reasonable given that Betws is a tourist trap. There's a small seating area inside but better than this, assuming the sun is shining, is the small seating area outside. If you want something more scenic then you can cross the adjacent Pont-y-Pair bridge and make your way down to the river bank opposite for a picnic. Not a particularly outstanding chippy in it's own right but perfectly acceptable and thanks to it's location definitely worth a visit.
