Absolutely fantastic fish and chips. Pukka Pies - say no more! No frills restaurant area, plus takeaway.

The first thing to point out is that Hen Siop is Welsh for "Old Shop" so this isn't a place to go…read moreto buy chickens, unless you want them in a pie with a bit of mushroom because Hen Siop is in fact a fish and chip shop. From the outside it doesn't look like a typical takeaway as it's constructed from the same stone as every other building in the village, presumably this is some sort of National Park planning requirement. Step inside and you could be in any chip shop anywhere in the country. There are no surprises on the menu, it's all typical chippy fare, and the prices are reasonable given that Betws is a tourist trap. There's a small seating area inside but better than this, assuming the sun is shining, is the small seating area outside. If you want something more scenic then you can cross the adjacent Pont-y-Pair bridge and make your way down to the river bank opposite for a picnic. Not a particularly outstanding chippy in it's own right but perfectly acceptable and thanks to it's location definitely worth a visit.

I have had fish and chips all over our wonderful country BUT the fish in this place (as far as…read more"fish and chips" goes) are at the very top of the best of the best. Its a wonderful combination of the fish they use, they way the cook it and the atmosphere in which you get it. Oh and did I mention the portion size is huge!! This is not a posh place its a very common looking "chippie shop" in a small village in Betws-Y-Coed but wow!!! That being said, most of the other food on the menu is very what you might expect so what ever you do, if you are there, get the FISH AND CHIPS. You can sit down and have them either inside or outside or you can take them away. Just a great, hidden gem! A real do not miss.
