I wouldn't call Jan's a thrift store. She has such a wide variety. From baby needs ( clothes toys )…read moreto a antique spoon. In her main shop she has clothes for all sizes gender, all seasons. Bedding from quilts to sheets. Pillows throw pillows knitted blankets. She also has a variation of kitchen appliances, kitchen utensils all the way to ice skates baskets, figurines. In the back is where she keeps her furniture. The furniture can be anywhere from nowaday to antique just depending on what she has in the shop at the time. She also has bed mattresses headboards footboards lamps pictures and picture frames. I myself the shop there because you never know what she's going to have in her shop. It's always a surprise to see something that you haven't seen in years, say that old kitchen utensil that they don't make anymore that you loved to cook with, bam there it is on her shelf. I love pulling up to see all of the craft projects that range in such a variation from something that you would put in a farm home to in your brand new house that you were just looking for that one piece. That mouth drop piece that you have to have. So no Jan's is not a thrift store. Jan's, she is so much more then a store, she is a person and a very delightful person to see when you walk in that door. Happy shopping and remember to pin on your GPS.

Stuff. Lots and lots and lots of STUFF. If you are a fan of mid-century modern, this place gets a…read moresolid "4". If you in search of antiques...not so much. Probably a "3". This quirky warren of rooms is in a converted nursing home a dozen or so miles north of New Ulm, MN (Yay Schell's Brewery!). It's nicely organized with rooms dedicated to more-or-less single subjects. "Kitchen", "Plates", "Chairs", and the mysterious "Men's Room". The latter is full of tools (anyone for 20 hand saws?), jars of nuts'n'bolts (you know those... "I may need this someday" jars"), drill bits. I suppose SOMEONE would think these are just "guy" things, but being married to a gal that grew up in a hardware store (see: Sauser's Hardware in Pine City), the "Men's Room" is kind of sexist. If you are outfitting a kitchen or a house on the cheap, this is a GREAT place to go. 20 blenders of various types. Microwaves. Pots'and'pans. Old stereo systems (I could have used one of those last month.) But I digress. The owner is a wonderful lady! We had a delightful time talking with her. She gets the goodies by buying out storage lockers and through clean-out-the-house estate sales. I can emphasize with the latter. When my Dad died a decade ago we had someone like her clean out his house. The things at Big Dog's look like they could have come out of his house. The place could use a serious edit. If you're willing to dig you'll no doubt find things that you Must Have (The beloved found a classic 1970's electric frying pan to replace her favorite that died two years ago. Goodbye Teflon-coated modern replacement!). To be honest, probably 90% of the stuff in Big Dog's could go to Goodwill or (gasp) the landfill and the rest that was there would be a LOT easier to sort through. I'd tell the owner (Sharon) that she'd make a bit more money if people could find things and not have to wade through the dreck. That said, the place is worth a visit. ESPECIALLY worth a visit if you collect mid-century modern. The house contents that have been piled into the rooms are pretty much from houses that were inhabited by folks from 1960 to 1980). If you take your time and carefully go through the rooms you're bound to find at least one or two things that you knew you just had to have.
