It's a Sunday in France so you can't count on restaurants to necessarily be open, even in charming…read morelittle towns like Saint Germain. As it was, we wandered away from the RER station and the restaurants that screamed: "Come here tourists, to overpay for mediocre food." About 10 minutes later we happened upon La Piazza. None of us were particularly interested in Italian fare that day, but we were interested in eating rather than more wandering (we had just spent a couple hours in the excellent Archeology museum at the Chateau. I had a decent duck lasagna, which we all washed down with a couple bottles of montepulciano (from Abruzzo, of course - when the Italian wines are less expensive than the domestic wines, you go for it). They also have a great chocolate sphere dessert which melts under a flow of hot chocolate cream which reveals a "mango tartare" underneath. Make reservations - the only reason we got a table was because we showed up around 12h30 and took the table by the window, which I assume they leave for walk-ins.

The 2 women who served us were very patient with our limited French and with our 2 young kids, unlike at the last French restaurant we dined at. The food was very good as well. Tried the black risotto with shrimp (3-4), spaghetti bolognese, Caesar salad and Milanesa. They were all tasty, but the Milanesa could've been better if accompanied by pasta with red sauce rather than Gorgonzola sauce. The kids plate came with strawberry ice cream in a cute little container that they could keep. All in all a great find!

But it wasn't, unfortunately. The restaurant is tucked away into the garden, a little walk from the main buildings of Versailles. We came right on time as it was specified on the ticket (lunch meal purchased with the ticket). They seated us outside and the service was just okay. I had the pasta from the menu (and a few other items they do charge extra for.) The tomato & tuna salad was pretty bland and the pasta just wasn't good. My husband was very underwhelmed by his option as well. The bread - we thought - surely the bread will be amazing. No, it was just a flat, dry, carboard-y kind of bread. It was awful. This was just pure convenience for us and should have expected a less than stellar experience. I would have chosen a better option upon arriving back in Paris.

It came with a tea or drink, a main, and either a starter or dessert. I chose a starter and it was not bad! Didn't want to eat all of it so that I had room for the pasta. The food took a while to come. The shrimp pasta was very dry and under seasoned. The shrimp was slightly overcooked but the star of the plate. I wish the pasta had better sauce than a bisque. It dried up. The pasta was mushy and overcooked. No flavor. Honestly, it was not a very good meal. The inside was cute. The service was not bad but not exceptional.
