This market…read moresprawls across the city center, and because it's so close to the Sainte Anne metro station, it makes it all the more appealing to me! There are hundreds of vendors selling all sorts of products: flowers, fresh produce, meats, seafood, baked goods, sweets, cheeses, and dairy products, as well as food trucks and stands. All the prices are relatively similar, but there are a few stalls that sell their produce for dirt-cheap prices. The produce is VERY fresh, so you should consider buying only what you can eat within the next few days. I particularly love the baked goods section of the market, located inside the covered buildings, because of the wide variety. I get my favorite mini kouign amann from here, as well as beautifully baked brioche loaves. No one has told me a definitive hours of operations, but to my understanding they're open from at least 9am-1pm, but go as early as possible, because with each passing moment, it gets busier and busier, until you're drowning in a crowd of people.

One of the biggest and most famous in France, Le Marché des Lices is pretty great! There must be several hundred stalls selling any food you could possibly want: fresh fruit and veg, bread, cakes, meats (cooked and raw), honey, and much more. If I lived closer I would have dived in and grabbed some of the delicious looking fresh (and often still alive) seafood, but I don't reckon the smells would have been too friendly after putting them in my bag and walking round all day in the glorious spring sun. Round the corner there is also a large flower market, but for me, it was all about the food. The fruit and veg are considerably cheaper than the fare I can find in Nantes, and the quality is excellent. Keep an eye out for the jam stalls - it will probably take an age testing out the dozens and dozens of delicious jams but that's half the fun isn't it. I bagged a kiwi and pomelo confiture with a really unique taste and I can't wait to eat it with fresh bread. Many of the vendors speak pretty good English although I was able to get by my average French. Like most markets in France it shuts at 13:30 so if you want to take your time browsing try to get down earlier rather than later. The same can be said about buying lunch there. There are maybe two dozen trailers selling lunch fare in between the two covered halls, and when I queued up at 12:30 to get un galette de saucisse (a sausage wrapped in a buckwheat crêpe - a local favourite), I had to wait for a good 20-25 minutes. Sure it was quite nice, but trying to eat this at the same time as hurriedly buying pink garlic and saucisson de canard. You can probably grab similar fare throughout the city with much less waiting. All in all however, a really great place to look round and buy some choice produce.

Le Fournil Vasselot, according to my school, is known for their 1 euro cookies, and every time I've passed by the store, there's a line out the door (although they go quickly, and it gives you time to decide what you want in the line). The cookies are relatively large in size for the price, and they have ten different flavors, ranging from classic chocolate chip cookies, to prailine, orange, and, oreo, and speculoos cookies. They have a wide variety of other baked treats, such as cakes, croissants, financiers, and brownies. So far, I've gotten the Caramel Beurre Sale (Salted Butter Caramel cookie), Tout Chocolat (Double Chocolate cookie) and a Raspberry Pistachio Financier. The cookies are phenomenal. The salted butter balanced out the flavors, making it not too sweet, and I got a taste of the caramel and chocolate in every bite. The Tout Chocolat wasn't too chocolatey despite the color, which would have been great any other day that I wasn't on my period and craving massive amounts of chocolate HAHA I really like that that Tout Chocolat has two dollops of dark chocolate ganache in the center, giving it the extra chocolatey oomph it needs. The flavors of the cookies are amazing, but what really hooked me was the texture. I used to be a die-hard chewy cookies fan. The chewier the better. However, I've converted to a soft cookie kind of gal after trying these. The center is amazingly soft and fluffy - like it's almost impossible. Yet, the outside is still chewy, giving it the perfect balance between soft and chewy. And a bonus for me is that there's no lingering sugar flavor in your mouth like what you get when you eat sweets in America. All this for 1 euro?! It's hard to believe, I know. The Raspberry Pistachio Financier was also amazing. Very subtle pistachio flavor (although the flavor got stronger when I ate it the next day), and the tart raspberries really gave the otherwise sweet financier a nice touch.

There is a huge selection of pastries and breads, everything looked so good, it was hard to decide what to get! I ordered an an individual blueberry crumble, which honestly was big enough to share. It was loaded with fresh blueberries and the cake was incredibly moist and fresh. Apparently this place is known for having the best cookies in Rennes, which I'd definitely try if I ever find myself in Rennes again.

I tried their kouign amann a couple weeks back (€2,50) and it was one of the lightest I've ever had - not too buttery and the caramelized bottom wasn't as thick and hard to eat as other places. Decent, but definitely not something I'd go back for. I had been meaning to try a Far Breton (basically a baked custard/flan with raisins), and saw that they sold them individually rather than in slices like most places. As I was standing in line to get one, the man in the back brought out two fresh trays of cookies. Just like their competitor across the street, they also sell their cookies for €1, and I always wanted to try one, but ended up going to the other bakery instead. I used this as my perfect opportunity to finally do a taste test of another €1 cookie. The Far Breton (€2,50) was good and a nice size but a little too sweet for my liking. It really was just like eating flan, but because I'm not a fan of raisins, I wouldn't get it again. The cookie was actually pretty good. It might have been because it was fresh out of the oven and still very warm when I got it. Although it's a lot smaller than the other bakery, it's packed with brown sugar flavor and chocolate chips. The edges are crispy and the inside was still soft, moist, and just a little bit chewy. If their cookies are always like this, I wouldn't mind making this my second favorite bakery for cookies. The worker was also very sweet when she realized my French was very. very. horrible HAHA I asked her for a specific Far Breton and showed her which one in a picture (I'm very particular, and the one that was at the very back and bottom which I knew she would give me was so much smaller than the other ones, and I wanted the biggest one possible HAHA) and she was very accommodating to my strange request.

It's definitely not as well known and the inside is a lot smaller (only two tables inside) than the original Columbier location, but service is and ambiance are just as great. My friend and I went on a Wednesday at 12pm, and there were only two other parties sitting outside, so we got to snag the inside table. The owner, who I've noticed works at both locations, and a server were the only two workers in the FoH, but both were super sweet and explained to us the menu in English. I got the Mommy's Dwich (€10) and their famous Snickers (€5) and my friend got the Weekly special (White fish in a coconut milk with pumpkin puree and seasonal veggies - €9,50) and the cheesecake (€4). There was a hefty portion of roasted beef on top the open faced sandwich, with a nice hearty gratin sitting between the beef and the perfectly toasted brioche bread. It came with a side of salad and tartar sauce (which I didn't use). The portion, like all plates I've had here, was a little small for the price (and as I've mentioned in my review for the original location, I never leave this place full, but I always leave satisfied with my choices haha). The roast beef didn't have much flavor which I was a little sad about, but the gratin was delicious and creamy, and the brioche was also wonderful. The Snickers was amazing, and I can see why the description underneath is "The Famous One". They really recreated the snickers, but better. The bottom layer is a brownie/chocolate cake, and very nutty peanut butter cream sits on top, encased by milk chocolate with bits of peanuts, topped with a thick whipped cream and peanuts. I tried a bite of my friends cheesecake and it was very creamy and delicious. Wonderful cafe run by wonderful people and always serving amazing food.

Although the cheese curds were fairly spot on and fresh, sadly, the sauce brune lacked flavor. I would've liked to season it with even some salt to make it a bit more savory. The burger also lacked flavor and the bacon wasn't crisp. I hate to admit that I prefer the poutine at Chez Ashton which is literally the very fast food version of poutine in Quebec). The la Masquée beer on the other hand was delicious. I'd go back just for a beer. I did think it was neat that they'd named dishes after Les Canadiens players (Allez Les Habs!) and that they've brought flannel cool to Rennes, but it just missed the mark a bit too much for my tastes. They do carry Ben & Jerry's ice cream (always makes me giggle to see my neighboring ice creamery in France-seriously, the factory is across my backyard) for those missing those fun flavors or for trying them for the first time.

There's also a few sweet selections that caught my eye (the Crazy Chocolate Cake that someone in front of me ordered looked ahhmazing). You order at the counter, and they give you a receipt with your number on it. I did takeaway so I went back outside to the window, where they hand you a paper bag containing the delicious contents. If you're eating in, I suppose you just find a table, and they call your number out when it's ready. I love that you can see them making the food right from the window. I got the Grizli (Two strips of bacon, mushrooms, and parsley with brown sauce and cheese curds). The classic size is 8.50 euros for 400g, but there's an option to make any of the menu items a mini size (200g) for -2 euros. So, my mini Grizli came out to 6.50 euros. The portion was perfect for a small Asian girl like me. The food was hot and fresh, and the brown sauce covered 95% of the frites. I loved the bacon, which was super salty, because the rest of the frites weren't too seasoned. The mushrooms were sautéed nicely in a butter I'm guessing. The only negative I have about this was that the cheese curds were a little.. squeaky? I've only had poutine once in Canada so I'm not sure if this is how it's supposed to be. The cheese taste was good, just the texture was a little weird for my liking.
