Well well well, so we finally meet. Dark, dank, doggies and delicious! I really don't know what it is about this place, but I agree with my fellow yelpers that there is just something about this shaggy old dog. Perhaps it's the complete and total absence of pretentiousness. Or maybe it's the fact that everybody in there, is there just to have a good time. The main appeal of Dogstar to me is the excellent, cheap Mexican food. Technically run by another company (El Panzon) from within the pub, it's still enough to get me down regularly with the Monday discount offers. I've seen Daddy G from Massive Attack DJ here and it was a good evening. The decor is like an old mansion that's been left untouched for years above head height and like any other bar below. They show football on a projector here for big games, which to someone who doesn't care for football is more of an annoyance than anything. The couple of nights I have been out here, the only criticism I can think of is that the ordering of the DJs didn't seem to fit the crowd reaction, but that's more about the night organiser than the venue itself. read more

I would never have found this place without the wonder which is Yelp. London CM Josephine B hosted the Yelp South Side event a couple of Fridays here and we ended our evening here If there was a category of pub called a dive pub, I think that The Dogstar's decor may just be a good representation - a bit shabby round the edges, disparate and non matching seating areas, table footy and pool table available. However, the atmosphere was nice and casual, at least in the early evening when I was there We snagged a large table for some post dinner drinks and chat but later in the evening, we had to vacate our table as the central area turned into a dance area. A good mix of tunes but I think I left before the dancing got really serious Drink prices reasonable for London and a big plus for friendly staff, both behind the bar and also on the door Thanks for proving the south side has some fun places too, JB! read more

Dogstar is my guilty Brixton pleasure... Having always lived just around the corner it's become the inevitable end-of-night location for at least one Saturday a month and I have NEVER had a bad night, and that's a big statement! On a Saturday night the music is a mix of pop RnB / HipHop / DnB with some old school mixed in for good measure, if you're lucky they'll throw in some Rock! Friday's however are a bit too dancy for me and the vibe isn't as fun Dogstar's rep must have increased over the past few years as it's now getting rammed after 1am, but at only £5 and open til about 4am (I think!) it's well worth it. Don't expect cheap drinks or clean seats, but if you want a crazy night with a potential snog at the end... then get all over it. Top tips; 1 - 'Gold-meister' shots; the bar man introduced me, two of these and you're flying 2 - Try your hand at beating the locals at pool or table footie in the back 3 - Arrive after 11 but before 12 to secure your dancefloor position See you there I guess!!! read more

The first thing you should know about Dogstar is that for a pub, it's massive. The main room you walk in is pretty big, with a bunch of tables (and not a whole lot of area for just standing around other than at the bar), but unless you're looking for it, you probably won't notice another big room in the back. I didn't realise it was there until I went for the toilet - and since it was a Tuesday night there was no one there - which might also have had something to do with the fact that Champions League was on in the front room. You'll find pretty good pizza for under a tenner, a nice local Brixton beer on tap, and hopefully soon the scaffolding out front will all be gone. Dogstar isn't the greatest pub on earth, or even in Brixton for that matter, but if you're hungry, want something good to drink, and want to see some sport on tv, it's not a bad choice. In total agreement with Louisa B! If you're tiddly enough (which you should be), it's hard to have a bad night out at this place. Packed full of 'trendies' and 'dodgies' in equal measure, I've also caught more than a few straight-laced corporate work colleagues having a boogie here. I don't know that many places which sell El Desperado, so that's a definitely plus. My only drawback is that I was foolish enough not to check in my leather jacket and it was swiped - beware - there are opportunists there. The door staff are friendly enough, there are pool tables, and there's a cloakroom too. All in all a great Saturday night finisher! read more

I know that most people know the Dogstar for mad nights out, and crazy beats, but that is all past my bedtime, so I shall review it as a place to get some good grub. I discovered the Dogstar in 2006, just after it had been refurbished as a 'Surrealist boudoir'. Whatever! Actually it does have a really nice feel when you walk in. If London wrote a template for how a cool, hip and current pub should look like, you would have the following things; stripped floor - check. Battered sofas - check. Mismatched wooden chairs and tables - check. Chandeliers hanging from the ceiling - check. Music that's a bit housey, a bit chill out- check. But as I have said before, I'm gullible and lap up this stuff. The times that I have been in, the crowd has seemed very laid back, and reassuringly, a lot of them look like regulars. Apart from me, sorry. Anyway, so I love Mexican food and they have a three page menu of Mexican here. It's not fancy (not that Mexican should be), and its probably not all that authentic, but it is tasty, and cheap. I would recommend the chorizo and mushroom quesidellas. When I eat here I get a couple of cocktails. The Dogstar cocktail is a highlight. I couldn't tell you what is in it, you will have to find out for yourself. The house reds are great here as well. Not watery like house wines can be. Perhaps one day I will drink a redbull and stay out later than 12pm. Until then I am happy to use The Dogstar as my place to eat, and have fun with my mates. read more

I've been here a couple of times for a night out and it is a lot of fun. The staff are always helpful and the door staff are very pleasant. The manager Rob is particularly helpful and was very sweet and apologetic last week when I realised that the girl on the door had given me the wrong ID after scanning mine. I was lucky they had kept hold of it and was very helpful getting it back to me so no harm done. Dark, sticky, sweaty, dirrty (the double 'r' kind) - I love it! Oh many a happy evening (and early morning) I've spent in The Dogstar, dancing to music I don't know or like and wouldn't listen to under any other circumstances yet somehow enjoy here. I think it's the drink! I've never been to The Dogstar sober and I'm happy to keep it that way! I wasn't aware that they even served food until the night of the South Side CMYE when we popped in a little earlier than I usually would have and everyone was eating pizza! Mmm nomnomnom, if I hadn't already had my fill of Mr Wang's Chilli Beef at Satay I'd have definitely given one of their bad boys a whirl! The Dogstar is a place you come to drink and dance - don't bother to dress up too much though, it's hot and sticky and your make up will melt off your face! Sexy! read more

The really slow woman at the cloakroom made us wait an eternity. It's a club with snobby young women who haven't lived long enough to appreciate a fine slightly not as young man as myself. I went there with my friends for a leaving drink so I was there around 8pm. Not crowded at all and nice area to have a chat! We were a group of 12. They have most of the classic draught beers like Amstel,Heineken, Guinness etc... plus bottle (if you fancy a pure Brixton experience you can try the Brixton beer!) Prices are ok and you can also order pizzas! When we were leaving they were pull out of all the tables to transform the pub to a dancefloor and I have to say that the music was really nice! Will definetly be back for a pint and maybe a night dancing like a star :) read more

A fun spot for a Saturday night full of rather tipsy and very friendly patrons determined to have a great night out and the feeling is kind of infectious! The places is a bit dingy agreed but aren't most of the world's best bars a little tatty around the edges? Adds to the character, doesn't it? Seems to work for Dogstar anyway, considering the queue to get in starts before 9pm! Free in till 10 and a fiver after. You can't go wrong with a fiver when it's open till 4am and there's lots of space to dance! Saying that, the dancefloor does get super packed and sweaty with lots of people bopping away to a combination of rock/house/techno/hip hop or whatever else takes the dj's fancy. High energy tunes at high volume means you've come to the wrong place if you're planning on catching up with a mate over a few pints. I dare you to resist joining in and working off the week's woes to some tune or other that's got the crowd going kinda mental! c* PS Be sure to bring ID. I love Brixton. I want to move to Brixton. If I lived in Brixton, I would probably be a regular at the Dogstar. Now, while there's nothing overly special about the Dogstar it's a very popular spot for the trendier and young, but not too young crowd of Brixton locals. The place itself is vast. Not necessarily abundant in seating, but has large floor spaces a huge bar and the highest ceilings I've seen in a while. It's mis-matched personality is reflected by the people that go there, but they go there for an alternative the standard fayre. They've got a cracking selection behind the bar and a unique stock of crisps. The Dogstar seems to offer Pizza and only Pizza, but it's in keeping in its simple, try to hard but not trying at all attitude. I love that this place is just up Coldharbour Lane, a street which, according to urban legend was at one point a singular street in London which because they couldn't control the dealers, weed was actually legalized in this isolated lane. But I digress. It's a solid staple and a decent offering in the are, reasonable prices and good times had by all. read more

The saying goes that you can't teach a old dog new tricks, but as Brixton nightspot Dogstar demonstrates, continuity and reinvention will keep you forever young. Dogstar has been around a good few years now and over time has seen its share of celebrities but there is nothing remotely exclusive about this venue as it manages, simultaneously, to be effortlessly trendy and incredibly accessible. The interior is funky and quirky complete with comfy battered sofas, striped floor and drapes creating a relaxing environment for you to put your feet up. Dogstar is renowned for its music and I can see why. It's genuinely refreshing to come to a bar where a degree of thought has gone into the music. Too many places are simply content to play the same tunes week in week out but not here. Various live bands a DJs play most nights of the week and there is something to suit every taste from reggae to rock, electro to dub, hip-hop and many more. There is a genuine passion for tunes here that is quite infectious meaning that you often get the same people coming back time after time. Although I haven't tried the food here they do offer a range of authentic Mexican grub which I'm assured by a mate is pretty decent and reasonably priced. Drinks-wise its a fairly standard affair with a few cocktails and your more standard draught lagers. A pint will set you back about £3. Dogstar is a brilliant night out and a refreshing change from your usual sterile gastropub. read more

Went to Dogstar last Saturday night with two of my new housemates and had a really good time. I think i'd label it 'rah ghetto'. the music was a really great mix of dance/r&b/dubstep/reggae/jungle/hiphop- the music policy seemed to be anything goes, which keeps the crowd on their toes. not too badly priced either- it was a fiver to get in which on a saturday night is quite reasonable. and for two amaretto and cokes and a bottle of beer i think i paid about £13- again, pretty reasonable. i'd definitely go back to dogstar (i live in clapham, so it's not so far away). not sure i'd journey across london for it, but if you're in the area it's worth a visit. and it's open until 4am so it's not 'one in one out' by 11pm! read more

The Dogstar has always been a cool hangout for cool music, right in the heart of Brixton give it an edge but the atmosphere is always sound. The music is always wicked mainly hip hop, reggae and dub and only a small cover fee on weekends. The Dogstar a pub is set over 3 floors, food is served and drinks are average. While I love this pub - they are often out of the specialty beers and their pizza basically seems like a standard frozen pizza from the Sainsburys down the road. The ambiance is really nice, however and I love the tall booths. I have a pregnant friend and I have come across so many pubs with her that don't sell non-alcoholic beer. This is one of them. Nice, but J2O does not make her feel a part of the crowd. Especially while viewing the football mtches on their giant screen. read more

Set in the heart of Brixton, Dogstar is just one of those places where, upon going there for the first time, you know you will be making every effort to come back again soon. Whether it is packed out with the up-for-it party crew on a Friday or Saturday night, or playing old rave tunes at a low volume on a Sunday afternoon, the atmosphere is always cool. The price of a pint is pretty standard for the area at £3 which isn't bad because on the weekend it pretty much turns into a club. It's the sort of pub you want to introduce friends to, just because you feel lucky to have discovered it yourself! read more

Its an average pub, but when in there on a sunday evening went to play table football and it cost a pound for 3 balls, and once they're gone they're gone so you can't even finish a game. After telling the guy at the bar that this was pretty steep he was really rude and told me it wasn't his problem. Won't be going back in a hurry.... read more

We love the dogstar! Always there on a Friday night, fabulous music. Would recommend to anyone of the age of 26 and above, with facial hair and a general attractiveness to join us! God it's been many years since i used to duck in and out of here all the time with fellow students, all embracing the lively atmosphere and affordable drinks with great dj's. A few weeks ago on a rare trip south of the river I was reminded what a fun place this bar is. A large group of us arrived towards the end of the night and gained entrance to the packed venue, we didn't have to wait too long to be served which was great as we were sobering up and it didn't take long for us to start to chat to others and continue our journey into inebriation. As a flashback it was a great reminder of one of the best venues around Brixton which used to bea regularly haunt of mine. Recommended for anyone in or visiting the area, for large groups or for those looking for somewhere that has maintained it's cooll appeal over many years to an attractive crowd. Love it! read more

A half Mexican restaurant half pub rave up double right turn from Brixton Underground, or left from the train station. Good burritos here for a fiver and you can crank the heat to 'don't come to me crying'! A coffee shop loyalty card with a stamp for every time you visit and the tenth burrito is free. There's a large bench table if bigger groups turn up at the back of the pub where the restaurant -which is run separately from the bar, and dunnies are. Occasionally they get some of the old knackered out 90s ravers like Stereo MCs advertised to play on the posters there, but I swear I've been up dancing to some serious gouda on a Saturday night too. Never had a bad day/night involving this pub but you will have to pay if you turn up late in the evening at the weekend. read more

I have only ever ended up here at the end of a Friday or Saturday night when no where else is open, as it does not close until 4am on the weekend . It is always full of people who are still up for staying out and having a dance for just a bit longer. They do have some respectable DJs playing and some occassional live music. I think I might make an effort to get there a bit earler and appreciate it a bit more. read more

The dogstar has a friendly atmosphere. Unfortunately it gets really crowded by midnight at the weekend, so much so that you can't move.

Time for one of those contrasts between the good and the bad. Let's start with the good: the drinks were great. The staff provided some of the best service I've had since being here on holiday from the United States. Now, it's time for the bad--the reason for the poor review: the bathroom attendant who was there on 09/10/2015 [or 10/09/2015 for my fellow Americans] was very rude. I was new to having an assortment of grooming/personal care products surrounding the sinks. I used TWO TINY spritzes of deodorant and take ONE LITTLE LOLLIPOP, and this prick got on my case about it, going on about how I used this stuff without tipping [at the time, I had none of the local currency.] Thankfully, my brother-in-law was there to satisfy this imbecile with a tip. Now I know: if you see grooming/personal care products in a public bathroom and you use ANY of it, TIP THE BATHROOM ATTENDANT; otherwise, he could be a real asshole to you. The next time I come back to London, I'll "do my business" in a different bathroom before coming to this establishment so I won't have to put up with anymore shit [pun not intended] from its BA. read more
