Make sure you know what you're getting into. I didn't and I really regret it…read more I hired this firm at the recommendation of a bankruptcy attorney; it was to "help me avoid bankruptcy". It is important to note that later when I needed to file BK and went with a different BK attorney, that original BK attorney called me and scolded me for not using her. She felt I "owed" her something for being referred to this firm. What? Kickback anyone? As to this firm: I was sick (so unable to work and pay my bills) and in a ball of confusion. When normally I would carefully consider taking legal action against a company or companies, I found myself swept along because 1) I needed money and 2) I was so confused and my life was in turmoil that it was easy to just tell me what to do and I did it. What they do is if you have credit cards calling you and demanding money, this firm helps you to threaten to sue and/or sue those creditors for "harassment." Even if you owe the money. Even if it isn't completely harassment they're just calling because you owe them money. I justified it because I had a lot of credit cards and it sure felt like harassment when you're sick and getting calls from 8A to 8P every day. Plus, the lawyers here move very quickly and help to justify the decision to move forward. Here is the kicker: based on credit laws, you can get a maximum of like $1500 from each creditor, but the law firm gets more than you in fees from the companies! So the creditor pays you $1500 and they pay the law firm $2500! Or they pay you $1000 and they pay the law firm $2000. What's more, you ROYALLY piss off the creditors. As in, they will NEVER forgive you. When you declare BK, which I ended up doing, creditors do not take it personally and many if not most will offer you credit again. This weird lawsuit thing? They take that very personally. By the time Citibank was waving $1000 in front of my face to settle this lawsuit I had to agree to NEVER GET CITIBANK CREDIT EVER AGAIN. Ever in my lifetime. That was part of the settlement agreement for a measly $1000, but $1000 I needed desperately. And I agreed to that and got my $1000. Now that I'm recovering from BK and I'm almost two years out, I have gotten credit again from many of the banks--but not the ones I sued. Nope. NEVER again. I take responsibility for agreeing to this procedure that has left me on these banks' blacklists for life. It is my fault. This law firm didn't hold a gun to my head. I accepted the money and used it to live on. But I SORELY regret it. If I had just filed for BK the calls would've stopped and once I got back on my feet I could've gotten credit again. Citibank is a great bank and literally I can NEVER have credit with them again for the rest of my life. It was NOT worth the few thousand dollars I got. What's worse? Because of the new tax laws, you will PAY INCOME TAX ON THEIR FEE. For tax purposes your settlement amount *includes* their fee. For example, the tax form the creditor sends you shows you received $3000 and should pay income tax on $3000--but really you only got $1500 and the law firm got $1500--too bad! You have to pay tax on the part of the settlement that they took for their fees. It is really salt in the wound. Seriously people. If you're down to this point JUST FILE BK. It is not that bad. It is fast. The calls will stop. And you can start rebuilding your life and you WILL get credit again. Like almost immediately. Do not go through with this near-scam and regret it for the rest of your life.

Most, I think, don't know the value of hard, manual work because they spend hours on the computer are able to charge for that time (unlike the rest of us). They charge to talk to them in a hallway outside the court after you lost everything. They charge to answer email questions. Lawyers eat money like humans eat food; Kathleen is no exception but I think, unfortunately, the bankruptcy court proceedings and filings are very expensive for some worthless, bureaucratic reason. You're not supposed to fight your bankruptcy; you're supposed to lay down and die, give them everything; so when you don't, it winds up expensive for you. Kathleen, at the very least, is professional, thorough, detailed, and she likes a challenge. I think she's a great lawyer. Unfortunately, lawyers don't play games with their own lives and money; they play with other people's. I recommend her for those with much expendable income; when it comes time for appeal, expect at least a 20K retainer upfront with, most assuredly, more money to follow.
