The DMV historically and iconically is known for its rude and surly employees. This particular location does its fair share to keep that spirit alive. I had an appointment. I arrived 4 minutes before my appointment. It was an 8:10 am appointment and the dmv just opened at 8am. Window 13 clerk just says "ID Code". My "Drivers license number or my appt code?" Exasperated he says "no, your last name and the time for your appt." Weird, I wouldn't think of this as a code. I provide the info. He asks " did you fill out the information online?" I said I did but I'd done it 3 years ago and again 2 months ago when I set my appointment, he just heavy sighs and says "go take the test. It's at the wood door." I look behind him from where I was and I can see 5 wood doors. I asked which one? He raises his voice and says "THE WOOD DOOR." I can see that this dude will be as useful as a butthole on my elbow, so I just decide to walk around and fine it. I complete the form in about 6 minutes and I see my 4 digit code next to window 14. I go to window 14 and see they are helping a person. So I stand in the appt line again and window 13 sees me and does this exaggerated eye blink and says "you again?" I gesture to window 14 and say the board says I'm supposed to go to window 14 but someone is there. Then the clerk at 14 says "I'll get to you in a minute." with an edge in his voice. Jfc, this place just opened and all of the employees seem so salty and surly. So I wait behind the woman being helped at 14. I proceed to hear Window 13 be a total dickhead to the next 3 people. He even said to one person "it's my job to direct people and I'm good at my job." In my estimation, this was an inaccurate statement. I will say, that while my window 14 person started off surly, he was quite nice by the end of our transaction, but here's the thing: Most of us don't work at the dmv and most of us are not going to the dmv more often than once a decade. We the general public don't have an intimate knowledge of the building layout or the systems in place. Maybe if these DMV folks showed a little bit more grace and understanding, they would get less flack, less flack would mean less stress, less stress would mean less dmv workers that hate their job and show it at the beginning of the shift. Customers service is hard and some customers a just total buttholes, but you can't treat every customer as an automatic butthole. read more

Efficiency? What efficiency? I booked an appointment online and showed up on time. My number wasn't called until 50 minutes after my scheduled time. An appointment that should have taken 15 minutes tops, took well over an hour! The person who helped me was very friendly and did his best to speed through the paperwork, but the wait time is just ridiculous. Making an appointment ahead of time is no different that just showing up without one. Even showing up 10 minutes early, I was just given a number that was behind 14 other people. I know these 14 other people "showed up" before me, but I feel like people who make their appointments ahead of time should be given a different group number or be put into a different queue to be seen faster...otherwise what is the point? I know DMV employees are just trying to do their jobs, but with the way they run the place, it's not really surprising why so many people get mad or irritated with them. They really need to figured out a better system! read more

After multiple appointments and a lot of back-and-forth, we finally got our license plates on 1/24/2025; nearly 6 months after this soap opera started. Side note: Our license plates were held up because the DMV was insistent that we owed additional money for registration when they had our home ZIP Code incorrect! Ummmm, we supplied proof of our home address, the exact same day we paid for the registration, back in August. read more

This place is deplorable. From parking to service, just disgusting. I feel like I'm in the twilight zone waiting for my son to take his permit test and this, after being accosted by the security guard outside for asking an employee if she was leaving so I could park after circling the parking lot a dozen times. While speaking gibberish he pointed to the "reserved signs" and told me NO repeatedly asking if I can see the reserved sign. Actually sir, no I could not see them until I pulled up closer. I swear to God to work at the DMV, you have to be a special kind of crazy. It's 9/5/24 & my temp disabled Packer expires 9/6/24. Waited 1 1/2 hours just to be told in 5 seconds... it's too soon to renew. Come back when it expires. The DMV is to make your life a living hell. read more

This DMV is incompetent as hell or their systems don't work right. Got my license renewed month and half ago and the license never comes due to the photo not getting processed or sent over. Either the staff messed up or their tech is faulty. Go to another DMV and save yourself the risk of having to come back in multiple times. Regardless, it's long past time to privatize the DMV or require the government to hire a third party external contractor (like Medicare Advantage for Medicare) to administer its services. I was very surprised by their efficiency! In and out in less than an hour. Had to apply for a new license as I'm from out of state. Waited for initial processing for 10 mins. Document processing includes the eye test, service fee payment and fingerprinting. Guided to photography station, done in a minute. Led to knowledge test. Clear and precise instructions. Passed on first try (whew) and given a temporary paper license. Highly recommended! read more

I was there on 8/10/2023 to help a friend with the computer to get a Senior I.D, we had been there earlier days before, going through the process later, he had given me the wrong address to put on his paperwork. We went back and corrected the error. The gentleman Ted on window 8, was the same man we previously worked with days before. Ted made my friend feel relaxed , calm, after making a mistake .He is 87 years old. My friend felt bad for me, since this was a favor to help him. I was so impressed with how Ted how handled the situation. I appreciate DMV for hiring such a great person. There is enough stress going there with the long lines, you leave there feeling great. On 9/18/2013 at approximately 4:45pm, I was undeniably insulted by a CA DMV Customer Service Agent, who called himself "Tech 91". After waiting on hold for 40 minutes, Tech 91 answered the call. I was calling to find out why my vehicle registration said "incomplete" after I paid for my registration the day before and had got my car smogged and passed several months ago?? He asked for my license plate number, which I told him. He asked for it again, which I told him again. He made a comment that he thinks he has the wrong information. I confirmed my plate number and name. again. After that, his demeanor totally changed. He told me he can't help me because "it's locked up". Not sure what he meant by that, I asked him "do you see that I paid online last night in full, and that smog cert was sent in months ago?" His response was "nobody sends in smog certificates! they are electronically passed to dmv by the smog station." ok fine, so I used the wrong terminology. Then I asked him, "so my smog information is in your system though?" He replied "I TOLD YOU THAT IT'S LOCKED UP AND YOU WILL HAVE TO CALL BACK IN 3 DAYS!!" Very confused, I asked him, "so you can't see any of my registration information?" Huffing and puffing with a snarky attitude, he replied "I see that something happened last night which is why your information is locked. You did smog on 6/25/13, its past 45 days". Now, being that I have never heard ANYTHING about a 45 day limit on smogging a car, of course I am going to have more questions, right? I asked him, "So are you saying that my smog certificate is only good for 45 days??" "that every 45 days it expires???" He then yelled, "SINCE YOU ARE IRRESPONSIBLE AND PAID YOUR REGISTRATION MORE THAN 45 DAYS PAST YOUR SMOG DATE, YES, IT'S NO GOOD". I asked him for his name at that point. He replied very quickly, "Tech 91". I told him that I didn't appreciate his attitude...he responded "YOU JUST DON'T LIKE WHAT I AM TELLING YOU. IT'S NOT MY FAULT YOUR ACCOUNT IS IN COLLECTIONS" I couldn't believe someone was actually talking this way to me. Yes, my registration was paid late because I had parking tickets that got added on to it which made it very expensive at a time when I couldn't afford it, and my car at the time was not passing smog, it needed work done to it. So I finally paid all fees, got the car fixed, got car to pass smog, and now I get this DMV jerk judging me and treating me like I am a loser scum bag because I paid late. I told him, "Don't judge me. You don't even know me, or my situation. WHY ARE YOU BEING AN ASSHOLE? There is no reason for your attitude. I waited on hold for 40 minutes and I still have questions..." He said to me "YOUR PROBLEM, NOT MINE - (giggling)" I repeated my question "Do I have to get my smog redone then OR NOT? should I go into the dmv to resolve this??" He replied "I DON'T KNOW, I TOLD YOU IT'S ALL LOCKED UP. DO WHAT YOU WANT. I'M NOT THE ONE IN COLLECTIONS" acting like he was going to hang up the phone. Beyond angry at this point, I told him that I couldn't believe how he was acting and then I asked for his name again. His reply "Hey Stupid, YOU JUST DON'T LIKE WHAT MY ANSWERS ARE! TECH 91. GOOD BYE" I know this sounds incredible and one may wonder how someone can do that? I am wondering the same thing. I cannot believe that anyone, no matter government employee or not, has the right to be so utterly disrespectful to someone. He cannot go on treating people this way and not have any consequences. He was laughing about me asking for his name...as if he knows that he will never get any kind of reprimand, he can do whatever he wants and not suffer any consequence??? As if me asking for his name was a joke, just useless. I am an American, tax-paying citizen, who pays this guy's salary. He cannot get away with this. I have never had a worse customer service experience on the phone. THis has to be addressed. read more
