I live in Matthews and could not get a ReadID appointment until March. I had a 2:15pm appointment yesterday (12/19/25) at this location in Mount Holly. I arrived 12 minutes early, gave the requested documents to the lady in the waiting area, was called back to station 2, and was FINISHED by 2:28pm. The employees here are very helpful, friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. I will drive the 22 miles to this location from now on for DMV business. This office does not deserve the bad press most DMVs are currently getting. read more

This quickest DMV appointment I've ever experienced. I had an appointment for my real ID. I checked-in via the QR code outside when I arrived, by the time I had given my documents to the first desk, I was already called up to the cubicle for my appointment. (Front desk women was knowledge and knew exactly what was needed). Then at the cubicle the person I had was quick and efficient. He made the experience so easy! All DMVs in the local area are appointment only before 12pm and walk ins anytime after that. I was a walk-in because I needed to get in as soon as possible and unfortunately appointments are booked up. I knew I was going to have a to wait a little while, so I just anticipated that coming in through the door. I chose this location because it was close to my house. I am very glad I did! The staff was so nice and very accommodating. No matter how busy it go they never lost their smiles. Will also choose this location for all my needs. read more

As far as DMVs go, it's not always easy to review them based on the preconceived notions we have about them. In my review of Mount Holly DMV, I am trying to be as impartial as possible. First of all it's very important that you make an appointment with them. Let me stress that again because it will save you aggravation and time; you need to make an appointment. When you get to this location, the door is locked and you have to wait for an employee to come out and assist you. In my particular experience, the DMV official that came out was curt, impatient and not liking his job whatsoever. When I explained I had an appointment he lightened up a bit but still was very short, uninterested and essentially going through the motions of being there. I told him I was there for a driving test and he said, we don't have appointments for driving test. Period! You can imagine that I'm standing there while he's looking at me as though that's the end of the interaction. As he continues to look at me for another 5 seconds in silence, he then asks what am I there for. I tell him that my son is getting his driver's license. He then asks for the driving log and proof of insurance which I provide. Then after all of this, he says we're not doing road test and that my son will just qualify for his license. I presumed that this is because of Covid-19 and they don't want driving instructors being exposed to people who may be contagious. But, he could've explained that in the beginning. Well, he didn't and he cause some anxiety as to what I would do. We finally got to the point and he gave me a number and told me to wait to be called on. Once we were called up, we met a wonderful woman who went above and beyond to help us. That's why I am giving this location 3 stars. She was welcoming, cordial and very helpful; she explained everything in detail and made sure that all of our questions were answered. So my son did get his drivers license without doing a road test, you must excuse me while I roll my eyes because as many of you know, you have to take the road test but I get it, safety first! My experience here was what I expected but the female DMV employee was wonderful and again very helpful. I waited one hour Outside then I waited two hours in this DMVs teeny little Nasty crowded Waiting area on 10-18-23 yet I still got sent away with 0 Success! They let even the "late Walk-In People in" even after the Woman saying they wouldn't allow anyone else???, and I was there first! I got yelled at too by the Station 1. I sat and listened to Him the entire time with other People (He sounds So Scary) So Disorganized the entire Place. Money Hungry Operation and very Mean! The Staff doesn't want to do their part. They give you a hard time so Disgusting how People are at these DMVs. The worst Customers got Served even the ones who cut in front of us. The Staff treats everyone like they are 3. Don't bother coming here. They will rudely tell you that you need to make an appointment. You can't do that online and when you call, no one picks up. You want to talk about a place milking the pandemic- "appointments only". From the second you are outside the door you automatically get the feeling, they do not want to help anyone. There are probably 5-10 signs of rules they have on a sign and the door including "do not knock on the door" Jesus Christ is this nap time in Kindergarten. (I wish at my job I could put a don't knock on the door sign, that would be great!) Unfortunately it is impossible to make an appointment on the website for months, at almost every location. This was the 4th DMV I visited in one day, 1-2 cars in the parking lot and they refused to help me. I literally begged the employee, my ID is expired and I cannot fly without an ID. The employee didn't seem to have any empathy for my situation whatsoever. N.C DMV's are some of the worst I've seen. This one, being a prime example. read more

Don't go there, they do not want people there. Only 1 employee, appointments only even though their website says walk in only. Then if you do have an appointment it's still a weight because only one person allowed in at a time. So you have to wait outside in the rain for almost an hour. This place is crap, I guess the mayor's pocketing tax money since it's clearly not going towards this or damaged roads. Oh and the Gastonia one doesn't do what I needed to go there for. I stopped by Jan 31 because appointments were booked into March and my work schedule isn't published that far out. I was greeted by Scott. He insisted that an appointment was required and immediately refused service. (This requirement is not the case at other locations). He told me he had 2 appointments every 15 minutes for the rest of the day. So I waited outside for 20 minutes. No one left the building, and no one entered. I went back to the door, he waddled back over and opened the door. I said no one is here, no one is coming in, can you help me update my address. He started getting an attitude and referred me to the "14 cameras" in the building. According to him, if he was caught giving service to someone without an appointment, he would be fired. I went up to Statesville the next day and was in and out in 5 minutes. If Scott would have spent as much time doing his job as he did arguing and pointing to signs for Covid on the door, this review would be very different. I personally think he's very lazy and isn't interested in actually helping anyone. He's there to do the bare minimum. I'd give him zero stars if I could. read more

Folks who don't want to be discriminated then don't come to this horrible place. One old thin guy was pretty rude and did not know what he was doing. Another old woman was pretty happy help with him to discriminate people who also works here. They must always be treated badly by others. That's why they hate people. They are as old as my grand parents. How they feel if their grandchildren are treated by others so badly like they did to us.I hope people don't get hurted by them anymore so folks don't come there and spread the words. I schedule a 9:30 AM appointment here weeks ago so I could update my license to a "Real I.D.". I arrived on time to find the lobby completely full. I think there might have been one chair in the lobby that was not occupied. There was a tacky yellow sign posted at the desk that said they were all busy and to wait in line for assistance. So I waited 10 minutes, during which time two people were called back--but not one employee took the initiative to check on the line. So the next time the queue alert sounded I walked back to the open booth to let someone know I was there, with an appointment, completely unsure if that even mattered. The female attendant looked a bit confused like she was completely unaware that appointments could be scheduled, but she did go to the front to check people in, including me. While she was checking me in, my husband un-be-known to me, called in (In my frustration, I had been texting him about the situation because what good is an appointment if they don't even know you are there?) to let someone know I had an appointment. A male voice then basically announced to the whole lobby in an annoyed tone that my husband was on the phone complaining --which he wasn't, he was just informing. I thought this announcement was awfully brazen, but also amusing and that kept me smiling. Ironically that man is the one who's booth opened up next, and when I was seated he basically lectured me on the meaning of the yellow sign that said they were all busy. In any other industry, I'm sure an apology would have been given instead of an unnecessary lecture about how I was wrong to assume I would be assisted promptly when I HAD AN APPOINTMENT. It was clear that the DMV staff were unhappy and understaffed which is always sad to observe. That being said, I think if I hadn't taken the initiative to let them know I was there, I would have been waiting at least 30 minutes past my appointment time just to get checked in. So my point here is that you might want to use a different DMV location. My wife and I both walked in expecting the worst but instead everyone was friendly and courteous. The gentlemen who took care of me explained everything, asked for everything up front and we had a good conversation while he got me set up. This location does not perform all services here but they do the basic necessities such as changing addresses, drivers license tests, renewals, so on and so forth. I have never felt discriminated in my life, but the person I had to deal with here did a very good job in doing that. I provided all the paperwork to get a license. After this extremely rude person spread out everything in front of him he asked me for my NC ID. Well, I pointed at my foreign passport and told him that I have a visa and no American ID. From that point the already rude person got even more unprofessional and sassy. He asked me for documents I already provided and wheezed so inappropriately loud after I pointed at the requested document that I already knew at that point that this is not going to work out. We finally made it into the car after an eternity to do my driving test. I noticed that his way to talk changed once we started to drive. He talked with an extreme accent, which he already had in the office, but not that heavy. Apart of from that his way to talk was extremely snotty and inappropriate. No matter if you are 16 or 31, no one needs to be treated with such an attitude. After I had to ask him to repeat himself a couple of times he got so annoyed and kind of angry that I felt really awkward with him in the car. I told him that I'm not doing this test in my native language so he should understand my position...he got even more worked up. He told me in the end that checking the mirrors and look over my shoulder when I turn are wrong when I turn on a two lane street. This was one of the ridiculous reasons why he let me fail. He told me that maybe in the country were I come from people get taught to drive like that...kind of racist to make a comment like that. Apart from that he made a comment about my English which in my opinion is pretty good. I have a drivers license for 14 years now, accident free, and the only reason why I have to go through this again is because I moved to the states and then they let me deal with people like that. I'll definitely go to another DMV for my second test. But that this guy just seems to have issues with foreigners was more than proofed after I watched him talking down to an Asian girl and her mother. It was disgusting how disrespectful he was. So if you are not a citizen better turn around when you see a tall, thin, Afroamerican man at this DMV. read more

The 2 person in 1st and 2nd station were really rude and unprofessional. I came in for motorcycle learning permit twice. The first time I came in I got all my paper works showing that I changed name after I got my citizenship. I asked him to update on his system and he did. But I didn't pass the test that time. This morning I came back and passed the test. While waiting for my temporary permit being printed, I saw my old name still on there. So I tried to explain to them the first and middle name wasn't right ( I changed my first and middle on all my paper work and have proof for that) so I showed them. But they didn't even look at my papers and then told me " they're the same" ( how is it the same when I changed to completely different from my old name ) . So stupid and unprofessional. Then they gave me the look and the guy from station 1 told the other guy "just gave him that permit and sent him home, we don't have time for this" . Are you serious??? No wonder this DMV got 1 star and not even on the map. Save yourself some time and drive extra 15 mins to the Hunterville one. They are much nicer and better over there or at least they can speed your last, first and middle name right read more

This is the WORST and I mean the WORST DMV. Please stay FAR away from them. I called the 800 number to make an appointment. My closest office did not have any appointments available until the end of May. They said, "Oh we have had luck booking an appointment at the Mount Holly location." I reluctantly said, "ok" because the drive was about 40 minutes. The DMV was able to confirm an appointment at 2:30p. I now see why they have luck booking this location!! The people there are rude, dumb and completely incompetent. I arrived at 2:31p. Was met with a complete rude ass woman who rolled her eyes when I walked in with my child. I walked up to the desk advised her I had an appointment at 2:30p. She said, "You do know it is 2:33p." I said and there were two people in front of me so what is your point? She said you are late for your appointment so you no longer have one! WTH!! Are you serious??? So I said, "What are you saying I have to wait for all these people in here waiting?" She said with huge attitude, "Yes, you will." I was beyond pissed. She said and you will not get to the driving test because we are busy and we close at 5:00p. I refused to be treated and talked to in such a manner. I left. I will NEVER EVER go back here. The place is small, nasty, and super dirty. The workers are completely disrespectful and do not belong in a customer service position. I drove straight to the Arrowood location. This location is clean, organized and workers are friendly with a great attitude. We were seen within 45 minutes with NO appointment! Do yourself a favor and avoid Mount Holly DMV. I have reported the rude woman who I dealt with today. Hopefully, something will be done! read more

just moved to the state, went here to get my license. Man gave me nothing but attitude! I had stopped at social security first to get my name changed due to divorce. Social security gave me no trouble, they looked over my divorce paperwork, approved my last name change and gave me a paper receipt of the change until my new card arrives. I took this paperwork from social security with me to this location along with my out of state valid license and the divorce paperwork (just in case) and my old social security card. The guy yells at me saying "I don't care what social security accepted we aren't social security and I'm telling you you don't have the needed proof to prove your identity and we will not be helping you today. He then handed me a form and told me until I fill it out and have it signed by a notary I wouldn't be getting a license in the state of NC. He also looked at my divorce paperwork and said it meant nothing to him since it didn't clearly say that I could take back my maiden name....WTF since when does DMV overrule a government agency read more
