His musical chops and knowledge are pretty remarkable, and you will definitely learn a lot from him. Recently, with David's help, I was able to get into Berklee College of Music. I highly recommend getting to study with David, as your bass playing as well as your musical knowledge will only grow.

I took bass lessons with Dave for several years. He's got a ton of knowledge around improvisation…read moreand jazz and classical music theory. I learned a lot with him. I was most interested in learning how to play jazz. We would take a tune, look at the movement from chord to chord and break down how the composer created the harmonic movement, realtive to the key, within the expanded ruleset avaialble to jazz composers. I picked up a ton of cool usable knowldege about bop scales, jazz minor scales, altered scales, using chord substitutions, hexatonic patterns and the four note groupings -- Jerry Bergonzi style. I also learned to play a bunch of cool tunes like Solar, Donna Lee, In her urge, blue and green etc. Along the way i learned that david also knows a lot about different styles of music. We left of working on more rythmic type studies of contemporary players who keep it simple and funky. No matter what level or style you are, youll pick something up from him. He also happens to be one the baddest session players in LA/San Diego so he can walk the walk as well.

YouTube is great source of information but it can get confusing really quick. With Aviv we covered wide range of music skills like reading music, Music theory, blues, rock, jazz and much more. I have learned much more in those 3 years then i have learned in 12 years on YouTube. I have my own business and sometimes i have to reschedule our class Aviv is very accommodating and do his best so we do not skip class that week. Besides the fact Aviv is a great guy (the beard just makes him look tough) he is like a family member at our house my 11 months old daughter adores him and i can't wait she will be old enough to take guitar lessons with Aviv as well.

Jordan is incredible!! He started with my 7 yr old son in Covid. My son had wanted to play guitar…read moreand I found another instructor who just didn't get my kid. He was upset and wanting to give up when a friend told me to give Jordan a try. Jordan gets kids! He is so amazing about figuring out their style and approach and working with that to teach them songs and theory in a fun way! The best example of this is that first lesson. We hopped on and my son was just wailing, Hendrix style on the guitar. Jordan looked at him, said hey dude, look over here for a sec. take your finger and hold this chord here with this finger- that's a note. Now wail on it again- just like before but this time know you are actually playing! It was so freeing for him- the first two lessons that was all he did- come up with a fun move on the guitar and Jordan would show him how to take it from "pretend" to actual playing. Next he taught him the most useful song in the world- happy birthday- and he played it for everyone's school birthday on zoom- no singing, just the song, but what a confidence booster! Seriously, it's been fun to watch my son learn with Jordan and there is zero stress. I thought I would be dying to have him come in person, but the zoom is so flexible and working so well I'm reluctant to rock the boat!!

"Yay! I'm a fan," is a great way to put it…read more I recently joined yelp just to write this review, because I think that hard work and good people should be acknowledged. Hence the four-star rating. In actuality, I would give Hemphill Music a 4.5 were that possible here. When I have been asked to rate services in the past I rarely give the highest marks because I think that there's always room for improvement. Also, in this case, I don't have much with which to compare. That being noted, Jordan is a highly-qualified and patient guitar instructor. What's most impressive is that, while he clearly seems to know a lot about theory and all that jazz, he is very down to earth and non-pretentious (unlike other instructors I've had in the past). He takes his time until you get it and will try creative ways to facilitate this. In other words, he's a good teacher and I felt comfortable with him right away. Great sense of humor too. On a more practical level, he'll come to your house and was quite flexible when it came to accommodating my schedule. I'm soon moving out of state and regret that I won't be able to continue any lessons with him, but I suppose this helps free him up to help others waiting in the wings. My short advice: definitely give him a try. I think you'll be impressed.
