I was looking for a local CPA after moving back to Texas. I found Justin through a Google search…read moreand chose him based on the positive reviews from other clients. At the time, I was going through a divorce and needed help sorting through a complicated tax situation. I first met with him in March 2025 and didn't have a follow-up appointment until September 2025. Initially, I planned to file separately. However, during our September meeting, Justin advised that my ex-husband and I should file a joint return for the 2023 tax year, the year we separated, because it would save us money. Based on that advice, I waited while he communicated with my ex-husband and gathered the necessary documentation. Months passed without any updates. In December, I emailed Justin three separate times before finally receiving a response. During that time, I also received notices from the IRS regarding late filings and penalties. When I finally heard back, I learned that Justin had filed my 2024 tax return separately in October without informing me. He then told me that filing jointly would not have resulted in significant savings after all. Had that been communicated to me earlier, I could have made an informed decision. At a minimum, I believe he should have called me before changing course and filing my return. I also discovered something much more concerning: he had never filed my 2023 tax return. Instead, he had filed my 2024 return, despite charging me $310 for preparing and filing my 2023 return. Because I was dealing with my divorce and the sale of my home, I did not have the mental bandwidth to immediately address the situation and needed to find another CPA. Eventually, I contacted the CPA my ex-husband and I had worked with while we were stationed in Arizona. Although I had moved to Texas, I learned he could still assist me. In February 2026, I contacted Justin to request all of my tax documents so I could transfer them to my former CPA. I was finally able to pick them up in April. Before releasing my documents, Justin wanted to meet with me. During that meeting, he could not explain why my 2023 return had never been filed. Ironically, the morning of our meeting, he submitted a request for verification of non-filing for my 2023 tax return. He acknowledged that he had let me down and offered to file the return at no additional charge after I consulted with my new CPA. Ultimately, my former CPA resolved everything quickly and professionally. Despite being in another state, communication was prompt, clear, and consistent throughout the process. I also requested a refund of the $310 I paid Justin for preparing and filing my 2023 return, since it was never filed and cost me hundreds more in late/penalty fees. To date, I have not received that refund. Now that my tax matters have been resolved, I intend to file complaints with the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (TSBPA) and the Texas Society of CPAs regarding my experience.

Duke is charismatic but runs client credit cards without written estimates, contracts, or agreements for frivolous amounts ($50k each) that exceed anything a Big Four accounting firm would charge. Essentially charging you for services you don't need, want, or use--IN ADVANCE. He will do this privately without the usual procedures involving his client concierge or onboarding agents like Austin or Taylor. I knew I needed help with my taxes this year. I'd moved, I'd had a regular job, but also a contract…read morejob - basically, I had no idea what I was doing when it came time to file. I'd researched some places on Yelp and called several "real" accountant firms, including the one that says they'll give you a free consultation, but they couldn't help me file my return on time ...or in one case, even bother return my call. They said they'd help me file an extension, but it was MARCH, yes, kind of late in the game, but early March and I still had over a month before taxes were due. I'd held off on calling Ameritax because I'd used places like H&R Block before and they were crazy expensive and you got charged for filing federal and then for state and then for filling in the interest you paid on your student loans and I didn't want to get gouged at a chain again. Finally I called just because I knew I needed help and they did have a good review, so I was hopeful that it would work out. Kevin did return my call and in a timely manner and we scheduled an appointment. They're even open on Saturdays, so it made it easy to find time. Kevin was great and very helpful. He didn't balk at the fact that I'd had several W2s with me plus a 1099 contract form. He didn't bat an eye at filing an out of state return. He also helped me write off moving expenses with relevant questions and student loan interest without any superficial charge. In addition, he was very fast and I was extremely happy with the results. I was afraid with the contract work, that I'd end up owing money this year, but it turns out that this wasn't the case. When all was said and done, I got a good return and I owed Ameritax no more than I expected to pay, although my service ran about twice as much as the normal tax prep cost because of the 1099. I told Kevin about the other tax places being unable to help me file on time and he couldn't believe it, which is funny, because I couldn't either. I'm glad that they were, though because I'm very happy with Kevin and Ameritax and with the level of service he provided. He's got one very loyal customer in the years to come.
