The only piece of advice I would offer anyone looking to host an event at the Arts Club is to be as proactive and organized as possible. At times the staff are difficult to connect with, but as long as you are persistent and make clear exactly what you want/need, you should be fine. Also, I would highly recommend taking advantage of the Hotel Lombardy next door. Their rates are fantastic, and the hotel offers a unique European charm. I went into what they refer to as the "Correspondence Lounge" which is sort of a small library with some incredibly old literary works. They have very strict rules and one of surprise is no use of cell phones... period. How refreshing! You can go into the Correspondence Lounge if you need to use your phone but otherwise you cannot use while in the dining room or other public areas. So make sure you "check-in" on Yelp when you are outside. Naturally they have a dress code, but really, if you have to ask what the dress code is, you probably aren't going to this place. Another rule I was surprised is they try to keep business limited so you cannot bring out a bunch of papers, laptop, etc... The only papers you can hold would have to be a newspaper or a book. Once seated, the service is impeccable. Extremely polite and not overbearing. They knew when we were engrossed in conversation and didn't interrupt. I had the lump crab cake for dinner and it was without a doubt the BEST! I lived in Virginia for five years and went to college at George Washington so I'm quite familiar with East Coast seafood and I can honestly say the lump crab at the Metropolitan Club is the BEST! I could go on about this place but simply put, if you have the opportunity to go, don't pass that opportunity up for what will end up being one of the greatest dining experiences of your life.

Something in my female DNA might be defective or something because I've never dreamed of my wedding day and how wonderful and romantic it would be. I never thought of it at all. Until my heart was captured by my now husband. My hubs is the romantic one in our relationship. I'm the practical one. I've attended many lovely weddings over the years and completely respect that choices about weddings are intensely personal. To me the money spent on a big lavish wedding could be put to better use elsewhere, such as a new car or down payment on a home. So I was all like "hey, we'll go down to the courthouse and do this thing! I can get on your health insurance! And we can both go back to work afterwards." Hubs, who possesses good sense, said "no way". This was his 2nd marriage and it was important that his young son be a part of the ceremony. He was absolutely right on that point, the kid stays in the picture. But I still didn't want a whole wedding hoo-ha experience. I wasn't going to get sucked into the Wedding Industrial Complex, with its ice sculptures, junior bridesmaids, rehearsal dinners, and custom printed cocktail napkins with our names and the wedding date "Find someone to marry us," I ordered. The hubs found our wonderful wedding officiant, Jodi Arbor Johnson of Waterfront Wedding Services. Jodi was immediately responsive, letting us know her available dates, sample vows and the required procedures in Virginia to get married. Because we were doing this on a budget of nil, we asked Jodi for suggestions or free parks or other areas where we could do the ceremony. She suggested some excellent options, we checked them all out, and fell in love with a small, quirky sculpture garden in Tide Lock Park on the waterfront in Old Town. Mother Nature granted us the most exquisite weather possible on our wedding day. Jodi was there on time and ready to go! I really thought I might faint or something because I was so Totally Freaked Out About Getting Married, but Jodi's high energy and warm likeability immediately eased my nerves. Instead of being nervous I laughed my way through the ceremony. It was fun - and having fun took nothing away from the solemnity or seriousness with which I took my vows. Our ceremony was non-religious and informal, but Jodi does larger weddings and can officiate weddings in VA, DC, & MD. Waterfront Wedding Services also provides photography services and can help with other logistical challenges in planning a wedding. When we wanted to rent a tent for dancing under outside, they helped us. When we wanted great DJs, they helped find them. For smaller events, the house is wonderful for a cocktail party, lunch or dinner. It retains its beautiful old world charm and is located just a stone's throw from the White House. Parking is fairly easy on weekends and in the evening We have also used DACOR Bacon for alumni cocktail parties. Guests tremendously enjoyed the elegant and comfortable setting.
