This was an odd hotel experience for sure. First, we show up and our rooms aren't ready which happens in any hotel sometimes but usually hotels can make accommodations. So they do, but when they do, one of the two rooms we booked for our family was actually not even our room -- another guests' belongings were clearly still there and housekeeping hadn't even cleaned it yet!!! So we told them and they gave us the other room next door instead.
The rooms themselves aren't too bad but the bathrooms are small and don't appear to have ventilation and the actual room is also quite stuffy. We propped open a window (we visited during an NZ summer) but the windows don't have screens so bugs flew in. Also, for some awful reason our radio alarm clock was set to midnight either by the previous guest or as a cruel joke and woke us up in the middle of the night.
We wanted to do some laundry while we were there but there were only two guest washer and dryers for the whole hotel and everybody was scrambling to try to use them -- including the massage therapist who worked on site. How come she doesn't use the staff laundry instead? A kind bellhop told us about a third washer in the villas but that washer's dryer was out of order so we had to wash our laundry and bring our wet clothes over to the only two dryers in the main building instead.
We also apparently booked three rooms instead of two (we had anticipated a larger group for this family trip) and the hotel forgot to tell us and gave us our third room on the second night instead...
All in all, Te Anau is a beautiful place to visit but there must be better accommodations elsewhere. read more
