There are plenty of more friendly bars around this one where waiters don't give you an attitude or tell you off. Best to avoid.

Missing the cocktail bars in Brooklyn, this felt just like Home as soon as we walked in. The cocktail menu is vast but the host was able to narrow it down for us based on our alcohol of choice and general preference. The cocktails were all fantastic and the host (wish I remembered her name) was great! Minus one star only for the cloud of smoke inside - it is a relatively small bar and closed and smoking is allowed inside. It was a bit uncomfortable towards the end but the cocktails eased the pain! Return? YES! Just need to plan my next visit to Berlin ASAP.

Well done Berlin…read more If there's anything I love more than a good cocktail, it's an almost secret bar. A massive steel door conceals the magic within. Ring the doorbell to be let in. Brightly illuminated in red lights with the haze of cigarette smoke in the distance and loud music thumpin in your ears, Reingold is THE spot for locals and tourists alike. I heard a mix of international languages being spoken here and that made me sip my cocktail in great pleasure. The cocktail list is alluringly extensive and everything looks so GOOD. You can't go wrong with a floral Aviation, a citrusy Dartmoor Smash, a boozy Old Fashioned or gin martini (2 olives please!) and even a Vera Cruz that's dessert like with tequila and coffee is very well balanced. We've had lovely talks about modernism making its return, all before being told by our concierge that Jansen Bar should provide a decent night cap. We venture out into the rain, Saudi girls in tow. Robert and I put out our cigarettes beneath a green awning and follow them into Jansen Bar with wobbly knees. It's a weekday in September. The weather is cold and the city is dead. There are others here, but few. We look around and take a lap, considering the posterior room. We decide to sit down at the bar and shake out the night cold like dogs fresh from their baths. And soon after we settle into the menu, we find ourselves once again solemn in a bar in Berlin. I know another cocktail will take me from happy to sick. Robert on the other hand hasn't been chain smoking Camel Blues. He's been dipping his pinky into a miniature jar, rubbing fine powder onto his teeth when no one's looking, or escaping into the men's room for a line. He's been wild. I've been nervous. My girl, Zariyah, ever since telling her I was of Iraqi background, has been rubbing my head wildly, speaking sweet Arabic sayings directly in my ear, a little too loudly, making me wince. This has Robert laughing and the bartender concerned. I understand about one in five words. I order a cocktail that resembles a Manhattan but there's truffle in it. It's strong and unpleasant. I have a tongue in my ear. I'm solemn because life, like this Jansen bar cocktail, can be overwhelming. I'm elated about something, though. It's because I've witnessed Robert's infidelity. His secret grants me leverage. He has no choice to be loyal to me now, to not meddle with Mr. King's investment in my paintings. I wonder if he'll quit trying to be Mr. King's main bitch once we're back in New York. "The art world can be cruel," I tell Zariyah. "The cocktail is delicious," I tell the bartender. Robert's having a whiskey sour. Perhaps this was all a part of his plan. To get closer. To get me laid. He pays for my cocktail and get's us another round. This time, I opt for a simple vodka martini. Slightly dry with a twist. Perhaps I misread him. He's still manipulating, though he should be more careful than to woo me in lovely German bars such as Jansen. He sees my bad animal and yet can't keep himself leashed. Boy was I WRONG!! The place has state of the art ceiling ventilation and I never noticed that people around me were smoking. But here's is the ONLY thing you need to know about posh bar... The bartender Micheal (German: "MEE-SCHY-ELLE") is actually the owner! But he's super humble about it and won't admit it unless you pry it out of him. He spent years in Miami learning his craft and has pioneered a "Cheers (TV show)" style approach to experience management. This is rare in Berlin. His masterpiece bar is THE BEST time you can have in Berlin without even knowing it! Why? Every customer is treated as if they are an old time friend COMING HOME after a long time away. This means that Michael (or the other bar tender Martin) might tease you, or even insult you, or seemingly act indifferent.... What they're actually doing is giving you a special opportunity to throw it back to them -- to tell your personal story, be honest and comfortable, and feel like you're at home with your childhood best friends. Do this!! Tell Michael your story. Open up. You'll get access to special off the menu drinks. You'll get special stories about crazy patrons. You'll get a place where you and your friends are treated like you've been regulars since you were teenagers. Make sure to ask Michael and Martin about crazy shit they've seen in Berlin!
