Theatre used to have a bit of a stuffy name for itself, especially in Wales up until recently. It was rare for great new plays and companies to come to Wales, and rarer still for homegrown talent doing anything other than pantomimes to get a look in at the bigger theatres. Now, thanks to National Theatre of Wales, Chapter, Undeb Theatre, Cardiff Arts Institute, Sherman Theatre and lots of other people I'm not going to spend the whole review listing but that I'm sure you know who they are, the scene has got a bit of a buzz. Dirty Protest are one of those groups that has been helping to get new writers for the stage seen and heard.
They say 'Back in summer 2007, a small band of people were bored of stuffy theatre with expensive tickets, plays that didn't speak to them and uncomfortable seats. So they decided to do something about it. Tim Price, Claire Hill, Mared Swain and Ellie Carter gave birth to Dirty Protest.'
What they do is simple but clever - they put established AND wannabe writers on the same platform, give them a tight deadline, the same topic and challenge them to create exciting, new work. Next, they take it out of the 'stuffy theatre' and show it in the pubs and the clubs.
In their short life they have already held a Welsh language night, produced three new plays for Latitute Festival, and development productions of full length plays. These days they are challenging writers to curate some of their nights picking their own playwrights and theme.
If you would like to write for DPT, attend one of their nights and introduce yourself and tell them what you thought of the night. They'll ask for a short sample of your writing to be sent to:
