HIDE YOUR WIFE, HIDE YOUR KIDS! THE MULTII-LEVEL MARKETING/PYRAMID SCHEME IS ALIVE AND WELL IN THE…read more"BURBS"! My son is a fully functioning adult who makes all of his own decisions. However, I am still his mother and very protective when I need to be because he is a sweet little kitten and sometimes life requires a mountain lion. A few days ago he comes home and tells me about this guy he met who has a great opportunity. I immediately think that this is a legitimate job offer until he continues to tell me more. Basically, he is being recruited to help others become debt-free and make better financial decisions. So, I say "why you", you don't have a degree in finance. They will train me. RED FLAG! Yes, my son is financially responsible and debt free, even after obtaining a four year degree. However, he is not qualified to be a financial planner and for me that requires an appropriate degree and years of experience. I smell a rat! I am asking a lot of questions that my son cannot answer to my satisfaction and I realize that this is some type of marketing scheme. A couple of days later, my son mentions that this guy wants to meet his parents and I ask WHY? He wants to know if you will support the "program", (Code for looking for suckers). Now, I am in because I need to know what is really going on since we all know that no potential employer wants you dragging your mom to the interview. We meet up at a bakery, exchange pleasantries and it starts. As I write this, you will notice words in parenthesis and these are the thoughts that I had as he was speaking. He sits down and immediately starts his computer and shows me travel photos of beautiful trips sponsored by the company, (the hook, it also reminded me of Jim Jones, Guyana). He shows me the group's Facebook page which refers to "The COMMUNITY" in bold letters. I'm thinking (cult) because they were all smiling and holding up the book, (Saving Your Future). He then begins to talk to me in code, (talking in circles and not getting to the point), just filling space) and it occurs to me that he is trying to "work me" and recruit me into his organization but I make it clear to him that I am only here to support my son, (expose the truth). I also inform him that my son is a "grown man" but that I am very protective of him and I don't want him involved in anything that makes me uncomfortable. Now, I can't say what I want to say to him because my son is sitting directly across from me and I don't want to say anything that would embarrass him. I also need my son to make his own decision based on what is being said. Since I am sitting very close to the guy and he can clearly see my face, I can only send non-verbal signs to my son, (long uncomfortable stretches of silence, piercing stares), so that he knows exactly what I am thinking. The guy asked me to complete a little questionnaire and I declined. After his presentation, he asked me what I thought and I said that I would need to investigate the company further. During the presentation, he would ask me if I had any questions and I didn't because you don't ask the weed guy if the weed is good because he is going to tell you what you want to hear so that he can make the sale. Also, if after a 20 minute conversation, you still don't know what this guy is selling, there's a problem. I have never had an experience with Multi-level Marketing /Pyramid Schemes, so this was eye-opening. Just be careful and know what's going on with your offspring. Here are some of the additional "buzz words" that were used and again my thoughts are in parenthesis: He spoke of members and membership, (implies fees, signature/contract), I'm a Christian, (code for you can trust everything I tell you, NOT!), He mentioned that members have to be 18, (Hmmm, this is only an issue if you are going to ask someone to sign a contract because you can't legally contract with minors). He showed me some of the legitimate/recognized companies that his company works with but I was not impressed because every illegitimate business needs a "store-front" and a face of legitimacy to attract unsuspecting customers and members. He said a lot of things that just didn't sit well with me but I was so in my head processing it all that he really didn't have my full attention. The entire experience was very uncomfortable and if someone from WFG, (World Financial Group), approaches you with talk of an "opportunity", Beware! ***As soon as we get in the car, my son says "I already know". Fifteen minutes into the conversation, he realized that this was not something that he wanted to pursue. He just needed a separate set of ears and the ability to simply step back and listen INTENTLY to what was being said. Crisis averted! Mother's work is done.
