The bilingual curriculum (French + American) is outstanding, and even though we don't speak French at home, we've watched her become such a confident and curious learner. As a parent, I've been impressed with the Singapore math approach they use; it's helping her develop a strong understanding of math, not just memorization. My daughter also enjoys the after-school clubs, especially Cooking Club and Soccer - they've become highlights of her week. The teachers are incredibly talented and experienced. With the small class sizes, our daughter gets the kind of individualized attention that lets her feel seen and supported. This is the only school I've encountered where all the teachers and students know each other's names. The campus itself is spacious, bright, and feels very safe. There is an enclosed on-site playground for the younger grades. We are truly happy we chose this school and feel grateful for the nurturing environment our daughter gets to learn in every day.

People who are able to come here are likely to get a good dose of the language and have an opportunity to meet a lot of new faces from all walks of life. Tuition was only $50 when it first opened, but now is currently at $100 a term for adults and $75 for kids. For NYC and all academic institutional standards, that is still considered quite the bargain. The teachers will vary each term as most of them are teaching on a volunteer basis, but all are native speakers usually from Vietnam. The classes are segmented into different levels separated by age groups. There are 3 levels for Adults (I, II, III) and one for children. Class materials are minimal, mostly it boils down to class participation and a lot of hands on learning. The Vietnamese language can be a difficult one to master. Though New York is not crawling with a large Vietnamese community like Houston, TX / Orange County / Portland, OR, there is always a need to learn specialty languages that may become useful down the road. And here at the Chinatown YMCA, the Vietnamese language journey can begin.

Classes are offered on Saturday afternoons or Monday nights. Classes are divided into either children or adult. We meet once a week. I enrolled for two semesters, starting with the beginner's class and ending with the advance level. As a native speaker, I never knew how to officially read and write. Taking the VHC classes allowed me to learn the basics of reading and writing Vietnamese. I also learned about the Vietnamese culture and met some fellow classmates who are now my really good friends. I highly recommend taking the classes to either brush up on what you already know or start from scratch. The teachers will work with you to ensure you meet your learning objectives.

The textbooks used are easy to follow and do a good job explaining the basic rules of the language, and the textbook work is supplemented with worksheets and, once in the intermediate class, weekly tests. The learning environment was always enjoyable and I always looked forward to going to class. The school itself also has a library, and if you sign up to be a member, you can take out videos/books/magazines that are in Japanese. They also have language exchange workshops where students learning English and students learning Japanese get to interact with each other and practiced what they have learned. I walked in after I found it online and was welcomed by the director who was so sweet and kind After learning about KCC I sat in on one of the classes and decided it is the right place to continue my studies. I enrolled the last term and through the one term I spent at KCC I became more encouraged to study than even being in Korea. If you choose to take the Intermediate level you are already knowledgeable about the language academic and real-life spoken ( colloquial) while the Textbook may be a little strange sometimes as any book usually if for learning a language KCC has great teachers who will give you a well-rounded knowledge of the language, everything for "Academic" to everyday spoken, slangs etc. the wonderful staff will provide that happy middle ground as what good is it to learn everything academic and textbook but not speak in a daily life colloquial form? if you are not feeling confident about your Korean go for the basic level and with hard work you can advance yourself! The classes are very educational, very comfortable - you won't feel as if you are in some harsh which is very important to have a teacher in which you feel comfortable with, I have studied other languages as well in addition to Korean and I feel Korean is the most difficult language in my opinion yet with good teachers I feel my level going up quickly. If you want to live in Korea, vacation, study or anything and want to get a taste for the language I highly recommend checking out KCC you will be happy you did.

(I'm writing reviews of all three in case anyone is comparing Korean class options.) I honestly struggled with whether or not I should write a review of the KCC because the director is so kind and well-intentioned. However, without letting my personal feelings get in the way, I think there are a few concrete facts that you should know before committing several hundred dollars to a class here. 1. No one affiliated with the KCC has a background in education, and the extent of their teaching qualification is that they're Korean speakers. The classes don't follow current language learning pedagogy--while pretty much all recent research says language classes should be conducted in the target language, the grammar classes were 80% in English, and I couldn't tell you whether anyone in the class I took (level 6) could actually speak or understand any Korean.  2. The grammar class was an hour and a half long, and the first 45 minutes or so would be dedicated to the instructor just sharing her personal opinions about Korean news. It wasn't even a dialogue with the class, it was truly a soapbox speech each week.  3. The class time dedicated to "grammar" consisted of the instructor going through the textbook page by page. No additional instruction or information, and no dialogue (other than another student occasionally asking a question).

The school is located within the JCC, and everyone is welcome regardless of faith. I love the community of students, their families, faculty, and staff. I also love that students have many opportunities to perform. This is a great school for beginners, especially if you are considering a career in music. Thurnauer is also a great school for advanced musicians who want to take their technique to the next level. 5 stars!
