Stayed in your hotel last Saturday and we were not allowed to go to room until 4 30 and then when…read morewe did get to the room The guest book said we were to vacate by 11 a.m. I find this a joke as the rooms were not overly clean and the bathroom left a lot to be desired. The carvery had no Beef on the menu and I do not eat fish, chicken or turkey. We had a light meal on Saturday evening which was not cheap as a Burger was €15. Just an average hotel which was not average priced MH

Its a popular hotel, and parking had extended across the grass lawns by late Saturday afternoon, as there was a Poker Classic on. Anyway, down to the food menu. Part of the stay is complimentary tea & scones on arrival; ours were still steaming they were so fresh from the over, yummy. Later then, two grilled sirloin steaks, mushrooms, onions, bowl of chips, side-salad if you ask nicely, accompanied by their new house red, a False Bay Shiraz at just €18, which washed it all down just nicely. The steaks were succulent right through. We chose to share a dessert then, a big slice of chocolate cake with choc sauce drooling over it. The choc sauce is tasty as its made in-house, not so the cake part; bought in apparently, a bit shall we say, saw-dusty ! They do good coffee though, and the full Irish next morning was delivered promptly to our room (extra charge of course) which just filled us up the more. This is a great voucher deal, watch out for it.

Talbot hotel staff were very welcoming and the lobby and downstairs bar was done up very festive…read morefor Christmas without being gaudy. The bar served quite nice food and although i didn't order any my sister ordered a set menu and chose Bbq chicken wings which were enough to feed half her family and Chicken curry and rice which came with chips and again were enjoyed by all! The bedrooms i thought a bit dated albeit quite large and comfortable. The tv remote control was broken with batteries hanging out and no back so everytime i had to change the channel i had to search through the bedsheets. The beds were comfortable although the mattresses were a bit sunken. Probably by all the guests that lay in them. The cost for the night was €89 for the room for myself and my two children one of which was a teenager and breakfast was included. Breakfast was adequate and staff again were polite, helpful and when i asked for poached eggs i got them quickly and just the way i wanted them. The only negative about the breakfast was that there was not a great choice in pastries or healthy options such as fruit and yogurts but the full Irish was ok. When we asked at 9.30 if there were any more pastries we were told there were none. All in all it was a nice hotel if not a bit lacking in the little extras. Carlow town is not far from the hotel on the Portlaois road and if you drive about 10 minutes you will find the Brownhill Dolmen which has been around for 4000 years.

A cracking hotel for a family get away!…read more It was relaxing, easy going (allowing the kids run around like nuts) and comfortable. The price was reasonable, the pool was clean and gym looked it too! The location of the hotel is good if you are just there for a stop off, it is beside a shopping area. It's a bit outside the town for a social drinking kind of night. The food was fabulous, i ordered a set menu, in which fed me and half my family, which was good value. The bed was comfortable and huge...room was clean. To be honest couldn't really ask for much more! Free WiFi for guests....added bonus!

Kilkea Castle Hotel - Cool huh

The renovations to turn it into a hotel…read moreinclude some modern amenities but keep a lot of the historical charm of the property which I appreciated. We had one castle room and one carriage room for our stay. Both rooms were quaint and well maintained. The gardens around the property are gorgeous and wonderful to explore during nice weather. The only thing to note is that in off-season the main restaurant is only open on the weekends and the tea service is not available during the week. While we enjoyed the food at Hermione's, the day we stayed there was a group event closing the main restaurant so we had to eat in the bar area. Most of the activities are off the property which wasn't very clear as we approached the date of our stay. We ended up visiting the National Stud Farm (about 30 minutes drive) and the clay pigeon shooting (about 40 minutes drive). Highly recommend both activities and really appreciate the staff helping us arrange these activities. The downstairs bar area is open late with a delicious charcuterie and board games are available to use by the fireplace which was a fun way to spend the later evening hours. Highly recommend staying at Kilkea Castle Hotel!

The property itself is stunning. Plenty to do between golf, the spa, the gym, bird flying, walking around and great food plus drinks. We made the 30 minute ride to the outlet malls and loved that also. The proper Irish breakfast to start everyday was amazing! I wish they would bring that to the states. Thanks again for the hospitality! Cheers
