Sauter is a photographers dream. It really is an institution. You won't find better consulting and…read moreexpertise anywhere else. The people who work here KNOW their stuff. You can mention any camera, any brand, any lens, any camera equipment and you will find someone who knows when that lens was first released, who built it, when there was a fallout in the lens company and the co-founders went their own way, both of the founders mothers name and so forth. Leica, Hasseblad, Pentax, medium format, film cameras, anything you can name, they have it and if anything is released they're the first to have it. But wait, there is more, as you can rent certain cameras or lenses before buying them, which gives you an incredible amount of freedom to find just the right equipment for you. Or you can buying second hand cameras, lenses, adapters, while the selection isn't comparable to ebay, it sure beats ebay as you can actually test the stuff you are about to buy and can make sure they still work properly. The only downside is that everything is ticket price. And they don't do price matching to the extent that Saturn/Medimarkt&co. do to compete with the mighty Amazon. So it's the perfect place to do your research, test out the equipment and if you want to support this institution from bankruptcy, buy. But for those of us who lack the funds, we shall have to wait the day until we have the funds and resort to buying from the interwebs till then. Because Sauter is really a place that ought to be supported, it's the camera equivalent of a great old book store who struggles due to Amazon.

The whole experience was not pleasant. I had gone to Sauter in 2007 for my German visa pictures and…read moreremembered them being very friendly and helpful (even though I didn't speak German). So naturally I thought to go there again for more Visa photos. Unfortunately, despite speaking German this time, they were incredible rude and overpriced!!! The only reason I gave them 2 stars is because (1) the photos were useable and (2) It was relatively quick. Negatives: (1) Rude and unfriendly employers (2) overpriced: less than 5 minutes of work cost 23€ for 6 visa photos. They charge a premium for the visa photos compared to normal passport photos and I really feel its taking advantage a bit since its not as easy to do those yourself in the machines on every corner. Next time I will try another place.

He showed me a backpack which is a lil bit over my price range so I asked him if there is a backpack that is almost as good as the one he showed me but lower in price. Her gave me the only answer you wanna hear. "Yea you can buy a cheaper backpack but I cannot guarantee your equipment is safe." The backpack he showed me he is certain it will provide me a good service. Even that I left without buying something, I definitely will be back when I need something. Thanks for good service.

I will write this in English to help tourists and international visitors who would likely need some…read morehelp while in Munich- Out of the major photo-specific and big-box electronics shops in Munich, this is the one I would recommend not only to residents, but to visitors. The store is not large, but is densely packed with inventory and part of a chain that can order what they don't have in stock in a short time. They carry numerous high-end lenses and bodies, so pros and prosumers won't be left out. At least one representative speaks English fluently (though I use my German when there). Prices: their prices are often, by a large margin, THE best around, sometimes even beating online sales by a good margin, but most certainly beating Sauter by a HUGE amount. In fact, in the sales I have completed with them, or almost completed, the last lens was 100EUR less than the locals and below online sellers, a new lens from Tamron was only 70EUR more than the used price (I ended up with the used lens because I needed it ASAP). The big plus about them is that, unlike Sauter, one is not assaulted with extremely aggressive, high-pressure tactics to buy items. Help is given, and unlike the other place, respect. Every time I go to Sauter, I am greeted with a bizarre combination of employees, likely the long-termers, who won't look me in the eye, look bothered to do such things as ring me up for items at the Kasse, LITERALLY shove just-purchased items at me and won't put them in bags before they walk away, and youths in training who are overly-aggressive about sales and trying to make a good showing so they may be asked to stay on. I never see them twice. Gregor has always treated me well, despite being a foreigner. Sure, Sauter has a good collection of accessories, but Gregor has a very good collection of lenses and bodies in stock. Plus they actually are knowledgeable as opposed to many people at Sauter who constantly fake their way through answers. Marienplatz also has a photo shop which I recommend foreigners away from, as they tried to rip me off on a 529EUR lens, which they marked up to double, then asked me after I balked if I am a tourist or live in Munich. When I mentioned the latter, they realized they made the wrong call and I realized it was a tourist ripoff operation. I bought a lens from Gregor which had a problem a couple weeks later. They expedited the shipping back to Sigma and got it back to me roughly ten days later. Awesome service. Nothing out of pocket. Conclusion: respectful, knowledgeable service, no high-pressure sales tactics, good inventory for pros and enthusiasts, along with knowledge of pro-level equipment, and the best prices in Munich that often beat online sales.
