I've gone to my fair share of Chinese restaurants, and this place ranks squarely among the "middle…read moreof the pack." I should note that when my brother and I went to eat here, we arrived too late for the lunch buffet and too early for the dinner buffet. So, we only had the option of ordering off the menu. There were two interesting things I experienced while eating here: 1. The waiter running the bar only spoke German and English, while the one waitress we saw only spoke German and Mandarin. When my brother asked the waitress (in Mandarin) what the house specials were, she hesitated, gave a small giggle, and immediately went back to the waiter at the bar and started speaking to him in German. It was as if the waitress either didn't know or didn't want to admit the house specials. Eventually, the waitress came back and gave suggestions, but her reaction was still very strange... 2. Nan King has 3 menus: one in German, one in English, and one in Chinese. The one in Chinese has, arguably, the greatest selection (as is typical for many Chinese restaurants). Despite this, nearly all the dishes served are aimed at pleasing the German palate (which is actually what we were told). This was clear not only by the taste of the food (which wasn't bad, by the way) but also by what happened when a Chinese couple came into the restaurant during our meal. After seeing my brother and I eating there, the husband of the couple exclaimed (in Mandarin), "Oh look, there are Chinese people eating here" (because us Chinese know that a Chinese restaurant is only authentic if it has mostly Chinese people eating in it...or so we are told haha). Let's just say that the couple took a look at the menu, walked around, and eventually left without ordering. Let me be clear: The food here isn't bad, but it was fairly mild and not very adventurous. The food was also fairly pricey, though about average when compared to the other Chinese restaurants in the area. Perhaps it would have been more cost-effective to have the buffet, but either way, I left not very impressed.

Nan King is a centrally located and easily accessible Chinese restaurant in the city center. The…read morerestaurant is especially popular for its lunch buffet. In the light of my all-you-can-eat lunch experience, I can say that Nan King is a decent and value for money restaurant. Except canned or frozen fruits and strange, colorful rolls served in the name of sushi in the buffet, I enjoyed almost every kind of meat, noodle and rice specialties offered here. Rolls tasted good, too. I am fully aware that the food here is adjusted to non-Chinese palate and very unhealthy for obvious reasons (salt, fat, MSG, additives...etc), but I still like eating here when I crave Chinese food. Oh, by the way, sometimes it takes so long for the staff to renew food when it runs out or when other customers (just as they do in every other buffet-style restaurants) only eat meat products in stir fries, leaving the others a bunch of Chinese-style cooked vegetables. If you have low expectations about the food and atmosphere and want to have standardized (and one click above mediocre) Chinese food you can find in almost every Chinese buffet in Germany or Europe, Nan King is the right place to go. You won't regret, but you might leave the place with mixed feelings. :)
