Don Fickett Local Guide·43 reviews·6 photos 2 minutes ago New Have been coming here for at least 10 years now and up until today I have taken all of their attitudes out of respect of firearms and what they do. I went in there today because my wife got a burna defense launcher and we could not find a holster and make it work the first time. So instead of buying her the pink one that we liked online we decided to go to Maine Military and get a black one. I went to the counter and there was a man named Chris and he was putting away rifles.I went over and asked him for some help to size up a holster that we had picked upoff the shelf. We opened up the burna case and let him pick out the burna .The first thing he made a comment on was that he couldn't check to see if it was clear and he started complaining about no being able to clear it out. I told him that I did not know how to use it as it was brand new and it was a CO2 gun not a bullet gun. He said well I guess this is one reason for us not to carry Berna cuz you can't even clear it.. and I told him too cool it down on the clear it because it felt directed at me. I said I hope that you're not complaining this to me because I don't know anything about it . He's like you would know if I was mad at you. Like in reality what is that supposed to mean from the guy standing in front of all the guns.. Was that a threat?.. so the next issue is that Chris seemed to have was that I evidently did not disclose to him that I am carrying a concealed weapon.. it says right on the door you were welcome to carry the gun. Not only do I have a concealed weapons permit but the gun was completely unloaded unchambered and ready for inspection. There was at no time EVER was it pointed at him it was always pointed at the ground. I was fully aware of what was going on and he started in some more telling me that I had to tell him that I had a gun first. If that is your rule you need to post it in writing in your shop. Your associates Chris really overreacted today. I understand that there are rules that come with a gun shop but if you're going to enforce the rules then you had to need to have them laid out

We started the morning on 1+ hour hike through a spruce forest to arrive at the edge of a cove. Seals were in the water and birds in the distance. We literally didn't see a single other person on the hike which is incredible given that it was high season (August). It was a testament to Rich's knowledge of the island. We did visit Sieur de Monts Spring and did a flat loop walk on the long boardwalk trail which was also fairly deserted given its proximity to the tour buses pouring tourists out in front of the nature museum there. Lastly, we made a visit to a tidal pool where we spent a solid 2 hours in the water looking under every rock for starfish, crabs, sea anemones, sea urchins and snails galore. Rich knew each species and explained the good and the bad (green crabs -- invasive, not good; Jonah crabs - native, good) Rich did all of the driving and it made for a relaxing exposure to Bar Harbor/Acadia that we would've never been able to do as quickly on our own. Well worth the money.

Their venue is closer to Bangor than some of the other outfitters that do this, however, the ride to get to the pond is at least an hour. You ride in a van and some of the roads are bumpy. The guide narrates a little, but I feel he could have done more. The home base is nice and they sell souvenirs, coffee, and snacks. They have a bathroom building with changing areas. There was lots of water on the ground there, so I wonder why it wasn't moped. Once you get into the van, there is no bathroom area (unless there is a porta potty that I missed. The scenery by the water was very beautiful and peaceful and even though no moose were spotted, it was still a very nice experience. The price was fair and there was always someone that answered the phone when we called to ask questions. Overall a great experience.

Our guide Zack did a great job of chatting and sharing nature facts while we rode. Worth noting is that the second half hour of the ride is pretty bumpy on a dirt road. Also, if you go during black fly season you might want to consider a face net. They weren't too bad on the pond, but they tend to fly directly towards your eyes and nose, and the net keeps them off. Once we got to the water we suited up with life jackets and Zack helped us into the canoes. We paddled for around an hour and ended up seeing 3 different moose on the water plus another 2 on the ride home! We were able to float for around 30 minutes in the canoe, just observing the moose eating. It was a bit of a trek to get here from Bar Harbor but totally worth it!
