On our way from Denver to Breckenridge, we stopped at this lake for a bit of a break. The natural beauty of this body of water is breathtaking....from far, you can see the lake and the Rockies in the background...up close you can enjoy the crystal blue waters and some of the activities that are allowed on the lake. Dillon Reservoir, sometimes referred to as Lake Dillon, is located in Summit County, Colorado, south of I-70 and bordered by the towns of Frisco, Silverthorne, and Dillon. It is a reservoir for the city of Denver, and its waters are under the control of Denver Water. Popular ski areas are close to the reservoir, including Copper Mountain, Keystone, Arapahoe Basin, and Breckenridge. During the winter months, ice fishing and snowmobiling are common activities. For warmer months, the towns of Dillon and Frisco each have marinas on the reservoir. The Dillon Marina is open pretty much during the season and hundreds of sailboats can be seen docked or sailing. Due to Dillon Reservoir's proximity to the towns of Dillon, Silverthorne, and Frisco, the lake has many lodging, camping, and RV facilities. The reservoir has a popular 18 miles paved bike path that winds around the entire reservoir. The path can be accessed at any point around the reservoir. A quick pit stop to stretch your legs and take a few pretty pictures. The trail is just a few steps from the parking lot. Summer views of Dillon Reservoir are much better, but it's still quite beautiful here in April. read more

There is a reason colorado is called Colorful and I really wish autumn would last a little bit longer because the aspens are gorgeous this time of year. We arrived at 8:30 am to hike before morning and evening rush hour since it's an hour and a half drive from where we live. On this day, it was right before the rain and snow fell from the sky so it creates this Erie aesthetic with the dark clouds in the background with the gold aspens peaking through. If you search for the Old Dillion Reservoir hike, it gives you a good view of the Dillion reservoir and a peak into the old reservoir. It's an easy hike that even small dogs can enjoy. There are owners that like to let their dogs go off leash so be wary of that. Otherwise, it was a nice hour hike and getaway from the city. We finished at 10 and that was when the parking lot started to fill up. The parking lot is small so if you're going on the weekends, plan ahead. read more

This place is huge and magical. I paddle board here all summer long. You can launch from the marina, or my favorite location Dillion Damm road where there are tons of beautiful little islands to adventure through. read more

All the 5 star reviews can't be wrong! An absolutely stunning part of CO and a great town to explore to boot. Panoramic Mountain views, great spots directly on the reservoir for picnics, and endless opportunities for outdoor recreation - the hallmark of a CO mountain town. We had a beautiful day on the water, enjoying Dillon's many attractions. There was some kind of RV tour the day we were there. We only got to visit dillon/silverthorne area for less than 24 hours for our anniversary. I rented a bike from a local sports shop since mine is not the best and my husband brought his from home. We asked about what might be a nice local trail. My husband is not quite the same level of outdoor enthusiast as i am so i wanted something we might both enjoy. They had recommended the rec pass trail that goes around the lake. The trail in whole is 18 miles long and has over 1100 feet of elevation gain. There were some parts of the trail that were for pedestrians only, the bikers had their own trail. That way pedestrians and bikes could split off and honestly i thought that was fantastic! Its always a little tough being out on the trail and sometimes nearly being plowed over by bikes. It is great they found a way to make it more enjoyable for all! They had said it was relatively flat. I guess that is based off what you might base it off of. Being from a lower elevation and in town this was more rolling hills which was fine for me but not quite the ride i had had in mind for the company i had that night ;) It was not bad though. The lake was mostly frozen over and the views of the mountains were absolutely stunning!!! There are so many points you could get onto the trail which i found to be really cool. Also a few hiking trails along the way as well. What a lovely little find! I would love to come back for a girls weekend and do the entire trail and bike around to the various closeby towns and of course do some hiking. I am sure the view of the lake in the summer is just as beautiful! read more

Oh the view says it all. If someone started yodeling, you would think you were in the Alps. This is an outdoor adventurist dream. Biking, hiking, and watersports at your fingertips. The area has great views and a long shoreline you can enjoy. The last few times I've been here it has been raining, but everyone still enjoyed themselves. It's great for photos with the mountains and lake in the background and there's a lot nearby such as the marina, park, hotels, food, and amphitheater. read more

Dillon Reservoir is a great place for the outdoor enthusiast. Fishing, all different types of boating at the marina and a recreation path encompasses the entire perimeter (around 23 miles) to allow popular activities such as hiking and biking. Dillon Reservoir is also the main water source for the city of Denver. Back in the 1950's when Denvers population was growing. Dillon Reservoir was created to accommodate the water needs of the growing city. The Blue River was dammed and the reservoir was created, In addition to the river water the yearly snow pack from the surrounding mountains keeps the reservoir full. In severe drought years when the water level is low you can see the old remnants of what remained in the area before it's was flooded and became what we have today. read more

Wow! This is an amazing body of water. I had the pleasure of spending a week in Silverthorne and Dillon lake one of the highlights of the visit. One day I spent afternoon at the day use area off Dillon Dam road. It was great. I set up a sunshade on the shore and fished. I only had one bite but the scenery was magnificent. The following day I rented a small pontoon boat from the Frisco marina. This is a great way to see the lake. Oh and I did manage 2 rainbow trout. So this is a high mountain lake and water temps only reach the 60's during the height of summer. Do to this swimming is not allowed and kids are required to wear a lifejacket when on the water. However don't let this deter you. This lake is truly beautiful. read more

Oh this place is nice for short hikes. Several loops and a nice view of the lake. Fishing isn't the best at this time but I wanted to get something in. Didn't catch anything but it is definitely clean enough whee you won't get snagged on stuff. Some sections have a lot of algae growing but plenty that don't. read more

I love this reservoir and these Rocky Mountains! You pass through the Continental Divide tunnel and travel a few miles down the mountains to a town called Silverthorne . I believe Silverthorne is the home of a recent gold medal winner. Dillon Reservoir shares this same valley and the views are spectacular. I wish my camera worked so I could share some photos.
