Friendly and kind staff that made my buying experience enjoyable. The gallery is loaded with all kinds of great local art and artisan wares. I was on a mission to acquire some new functional industrial utilitarian pieces and I found them here. Two beautiful lamps, each unique one of a kinds, both functional and quality fired pottery lamps at a great value and fair price. Walking through the gallery, its a large space and there is great art everywhere you look or turn. I found the first piece almost immediately but it took a good bit of perusing and searching to find the second. After my initial walk through I made a second pass and found the next acquisition. Another beautiful lamp, ceramic obvious artisan made and it fit my idea near perfect. After finding my second piece I headed to the register. The staff wrapped and packed both pieces while I checked out. It was a great treat stumbling across Piedmont Craftsman. Well worth a stop and visit, and your support. A lot of amazing art and artisan wares at a wide range of prices, to fit most budgets. 4.5 Stars rounded up for the great staff and selection of art. 01107

It's a wonderful artists' gallery/co-op, with hundreds of exhibiting members. From weavers to glassblowers, painters to potters, felters, quilters, and etchers, this place carries the work of artisans in the area, the state, and some from farther afield. The shop workers were friendly and knowledgeable. I bought two amazing stoneware pots and carried them on the plane back to NYC. Can't recommend this wonderful gallery highly enough.

First let me get this point out of the way: a lot of the items in here will cost you a pretty penny, but this is because each piece truly is a work of art. The store is owned/run? by four women who weave and one woman who does a mix of crafts including painting silks and dying other fabrics. There is a wide assortment of fashion items to purchase - jackets, shawls, hats, scarfs, bags, children clothing, jewelery - and a small variety of pottery scattered throughout the store. You really need to just check it out in person to see the great craftsmanship of the items. The saleswoman, who is also one of the artists, was quite nice and even tried to help us find items that might work for my mom. It was so wonderful getting to look at all of the items in this store, I just wish I had a big stack of cash to buy everything. I would like to point out though that not everything is very pricey, just many of the things I was eyeing!

There are huge cases of beautiful locally handmade Jewelry and at reasonable prices. I've bought different items from here and they have quickly become my favorites. The selections change often as most items are one of a kind handmade. The ladies running the store are always so kind and patient when helping me find what I'm looking for. I love that they have their weaving looms up and going at most all times. It seems so relaxing and peaceful when I go in. A very welcoming vibe, I can't wait to go shopping!!!!

Interestingly enough there are private residences mixed in as well. OK, so maybe it's really not incredibly riveting but it's still kinda interesting to see how early American life played out for Moravian, Black, and Indigenous peoples that lived in the South. A few of the buildings had docents in period dress relating the history of the particular house (some of these require separate admission tickets) or demonstrating their trades. For instance, we passed by a gunsmith's shop with a working craftsman inside, but it cost to go in. The whole area includes the Historic Town of Salem, the Gardens at Old Salem, the Frank L. Horton Museum Center, and the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) and is a few blocks from Winston-Salem's main downtown area, so probably best to park at the lot of the Museum/Gallery/visitor center and walk across the very cool Old Salem Covered Bridge to the village. We didn't have time to see all the grounds - which by the way, also have the site of the Original Site of Krispy Kreme Doughnut shop, which we did see, and were hugely disappointed by. It ain't nothing but an empty lot. But if you like old stuff like I do, you'll dig Old Salem even if you just go for half an hour. Plus it's mostly free.
