I'm not really sure about this store, they don't have puppies and kittens (anymore) (thank god). They had 1 syrian hamster in a cage, alone. Which is good! They had a bunch of chinese hamsters stacked into each other, maybe 20-30! I don't know if that's okay but.. Let's get to the point.. They had a bunch of bunnies in a cage. Guess how much? 5-6..? NO! 8!! EIGHT IN A 100x50 cage!! For those who don't know 100x50 is the minimum cage for a syrian hamster. Anyway, i adopted this cute hamster. She's incredibly small, the size of a lighter!! I'm not even sure if she's 100% Syrian or even "10 weeks" like the employee said.. The poor girl also has a big wound on her stomach, she's recovering though. read more

They don't have puppies and kittens in the store anymore, unlike what the previous reviews said, but they still have hamsters, mice, and bunnies in the front window, and some lizards in the back. I am not sure if they stopped carrying the puppies or kittens or they were temporarily out of stock, but I don't see how they could have had more animals in there than they already had, because the place is very cramped. I'm surprised they could fit in as many different things in there as they do, but they do it at the expense of making me feel claustrophobic, and also it smells a little in the front next to the furry critters. The store is very busy, and cramped, so you're always having to shift to get out of someone's way or to get around someone else in your way. They have a good selection of stuff though, including fancy pet doors that work on microchips instead of RFID tags, and prescription Science Diet foods that you normally can only get from a vet. They have many many different kinds of quality cat and dog foods, and collars, treats, etc., but you have to kind of look through lots of stuff to find what you need. Luckily there is a helpful guy or two who work there who can help you locate things, but they are very busy and running around looking harried, since there are so many customers coming in and out of the shop. I was impressed with their fish selection. They don't have tons of different kinds of fish, but they have all the basic fish the average fish keeper would want, including algae eating fish and shrimp, which my neighborhood pet store was always running out of, and that got to be annoying. They even had driftwood, which I also had a hard time finding at other pet stores. And most importantly their fish were very healthy and happy, brightly colored and swimming around vigorously, so it looks like they are well taken care of. They also have some lizards and terrariums and lizard supplies and lots of different kinds of bugs in transparent boxes if that's your thing. Overall they do a great job of providing for your pet's needs, even if things cost a euro or three more than at other places, and the store is uncomfortable to be in. I adopted the cutest, sweetest kitten from Dierenhandel Exotica on October 2nd, 2013. I was so thrilled, as I had been having a difficult time adjusting to expat life and hoped that a fluffy, snuggly little friend would bring me much needed happiness. My kitten died on October 11th, 2013. She was mine for only 10 days. She had Parvovirus and multiple parasites. Even with 48-hour IV- and antibiotic-support, her tiny little body simply couldn't fight it off. While Dierenhandel Exotica claims to have vaccinated her against Parvovirus, the veterinarian who tried to save her life noted that she was likely already infected with the virus prior to vaccination. The animals at Dierenhandel Exotica are kept in little glass pens with straw that hasn't been changed or cleaned in God knows how long. All kittens share the same pen, so if one is infected, they will all end up infected. Also, the kittens are kept "off site" in the evenings, in unknown living conditions. The veterinarian mentioned that while this shop isn't exactly illegal, their office strongly recommends not to purchase an animal here. Whether or not Dierenhandel Exotica is aware they are selling sick animals, I do not know. However, I do believe they have an obligation to ensure each animal is thoroughly examined prior to sale. While money is not the primary issue here, I expected the $140 fee I paid to cover "examination, vaccination, worm, and tick treatment" (as advertised) was actually legitimate. Parasites and Parvovirus are easy to test for. Dierenhandel Exotica has a responsibility to both customers and the animals they sell, and they neglected both. Please think carefully before purchasing any animal here. My search for a sweet kitty left me only with tears and heartache. read more

First thing Monday morning I'm going to sue the shop named Exotica to the dierenbescherming. They had kittens for sale in a very small glass cage that you can see from the street as they were a bunch of dresses for sale, little puppies running across the shop and the rodents... God! - One very small glass cage with "dwarf hamsters"; there were Russians, Campbells and mottled Roborovskis all together. I asked the guy about the robos and he replied "I have no robos, they're small Russians". I said "no, you have 4 robos among Russians and Campbells and they'll hurt each other", he replied "what you say..." and turned around and gave me his back. One robo had a very infected eye, a mouse (in the cage close to this) was bitten hard on the back and not treated, Syrians almost had no place to move (and they were big already) and one rat had a skin disease... I didn't even go to the exotic part of the shop, but I read that they had more complaints about not knowing what to do with their animals and spreading sick animals. I just bought a kitten from this store and the owner mis directed me saying the kitten have his 2nd vaccination up to 5 weeks when it should have been 3 and when the kitten got sick on his 3rd day of my purchase although he paid the veterinarian visit on Saturday, he refused to help when the kitten's condition worsened on Sunday...he says the warranty works according to his conditions and that he will not pay for other costs. Although they sell the animals unders a warranty, they don't stand behind their words...be very careful when you are buying an animal from here. The veterianarian I took the pet said that they received other animals with missing vaccinations and sick purchased from this store...my kitten is still fighting for his life...this store plays with animals and the buyers lifes... read more
