We wandered into this opportunity to volunteer at the English language theatre in order to attend…read morethe show for free and were all over over it. We sold some drinks, handed out surveys and received free drinks and admission. Walking up to the place it appears very workshop bohemian with artists and studios setting up a beautiful atmosphere. The theatre itself is quite small, or intimate, with the actors in "Orpheus Descending" by Tennessee Williams practically having to step over us which was a bit nerve-racking but exhilarating. At the end we were able to talk with the actors and the stage manager which made us feel much cooler than we are. We must try and go again - as paying customers this time!

Was all in German, which I don't speak, but since I knew the story I was able to follow. The space was in a permanent circus tent. Nice AC which seems rare for Berlin. There were poles right in front of the stage but only blocked view now and then. It was cool to hear rain on the tents at one point. We opted for the three course meal which was good for a banquet-style meal. Appreciated the vegetarian option. Service was good considering the amount of tables per person. Only thing I would change is how the payment worked at the end - people rushed the server and it took a long time to settle and get out.

There is also a restaurant and bar and you can enjoy dinner at your table during the show. The production of Cabernet was in german which made it a particularly powerful show. If you have seen Cabaret before (movie or stage) english speakers will have no trouble following the story line. The actors are superb and so is the band. Highly recommend.

The Wintergarten is one of Berlin's oldest theaters and varietes. Basically, this place has seen it…read moreall. Built in 1887 it is a witness of the amazing history of Berlin - from Kaiser Wilhelm to WWI, the first democratic German government in the 1920's, the Depression, the rise of the Nazi party, WWII, the East/West divide of the city, and unification in 1989. Throughout the years, the Wintergarten kept on playing and hosted famous actors and artists ever since. Putting history aside, what you can expect in this traditional Berlin theatre are variete shows, and the usual magician also stops by every once in a while. All shows are in German but if you focus on something more dance-oriented you should be able to follow even if you don't speak the language. The venue is small and intimate, with a table area near the stage, and an upper seating area. You can get dinner downstairs while the show goes on, and the upstairs areas are being served by waiters. Should be. When I was there service was lacking. No waiter showed up, apparently they were understaffed. Shows are quite expensive (50 Euro plus). Hit or miss, I would probably not be back.

It was great place and the show that I have seen was brilliant. I came here with my partner for the show "Seifen Oper". the theater also offers different kind of shows, then people want to visit always can find the show they most interested about to go for. We got our ticket via their website. It really convenient, just couple clicks. Of course, if you're kind of old fashion, you can always get the ticket at the entrance there. When we were there, there was an photographer at the entrance, he was taking picture for all the guests. I talked with him about this. So this was like souvenir thing, guest could pick up the photos in the middle break of the show. But got to pay for this. It was a bit too pricy for us and our photo was just ok, so we didn't pick it up. It is also ok if you don't want any pics from this, simply tell the photographer. The interior design of the theater really gave me a wow. It was pretty grand and romantic. There were many different dresses on the wall of the theater. They were all dresses of the best show that have been played in the theater, it kind like a trophy showcase, really cool. The celling is full of decoration lights, looked just like the night sky. about the seats, just like in the concert, the closer to the stage, the more expensive the seats will cost. But for good show, why not. We were siting quite close to the stage. And it was quite lucky for us, we got the whole table for ourselves. Now let's talk about the show I saw. It was really entertaining, I laughed quite a lot, also some chapters got my eyes wet. There were couple really great scenes I really like and enjoyed. I think most of them are somehow related with water. The story itself was quite simple. But I think the performing really made the show great. Brilliant. They also offer food and drinks, no worried if you got hungry or thirsty. The price is acceptable. I like service as well, very friendly. I could see myself come to this theater again, really nice place. But first need to find the show that I interested at.

Berlin is known for its cabaret scene…read more Bar Jeder Vernunft is a superb cabaret. * * * How would I know this since I don't speak German? Berlin cabaret is the stuff of witty performers tossing out wry life observations, double entendres, and venomous barbs all the while maintaining a poetic outlook on life. If you don't speak German, you are like a child at the adult table. I had two outs. a) I was at a David Bowie tribute that was half in German and half in English. Okay, 80% in German and 20% in English ... But 1/5 of the time I was in the loop. b) I could watch the audience and see what they were doing. The house was cracking up in laughter over and over and over again. Comedians would say the room was "live". The performance got a wild mad standing ovation at the end. I would say the Berliners thought this was an excellent show. * * * What can I say just from my own direct personal experience? a) Shows will obviously vary in quality from one booking to the next. My night had Sven Ratzke, a well established and highly regarded Dutch/German cabaret specialist. The man can sing and the man can dance. His versions of the Bowie classics were better than the Bowie originals, Because he put a lot more soul and emotion into them. b) The shows are hosted by different people, often as not a sophisticated drag queen. Our hostess that night was a superstar. Imagine an elegant refined willow-thin blonde bombshell. She was nearly seven feet high between her heels and her bouffant. This woman had a commanding stage presence. Imagine a cross between the intensity of a Klaus Kinski and the platinum 1920's polish of a Marlene Dietrich. I could have watched her all night - even without understanding a single word she said. c) The ambience is a world of fantasy. The room is set up as a faux circus tent. You feel like you are at the circus the moment you walk in. d) Bar Jeder Vernunft also runs a dinner theater operation for those who want it, with prepaid food before the show and during the break. Dinner theater food tends to be awful. We skipped the prepaid dinner but did order extensively from the kitchen and bar. What we had was surprisingly decent. No surprise - the beer was good. You can go to a convenience store in Berlin, Buy a bottle of beer and Sit on a folding chair on the sidewalk drinking that beer. The beer will be good. The fact that a cabaret would make a point to stock good beer is what one would expect. The cheese plate was far better than I would have expected. Yes - I have been to upscale French cafes where the cheese board was better. But for an everyday cheese board, there was a generous selection of a wide variety of cheeses, fantastic bread, even better butter, beautifully fresh and flavorful grapes, and a surprise horseradish compote to ambush you at unexpected times. The horseradish compote definitely shook me loose from the hazy fog of my beer. * * * If you don't speak German and missing the jokes is going to bother you, Then Bar Jeder Vernunft for you might be a bridge too far. But if you just love the food and the beer and the spectacle and the music ... This could be a magical night. Magical nights are good things.

The show was very professional but was in German of course. However I have seen the film so many times and read Chris Isherwoods book, so I could follow the gist and the music was really good. The taxi driver we ordered from the Hilton didn't know where the venue was so thanks to our Citymap we were able to direct him there !! Not easy to find ! Since returning to the UK we went to see the english version in London.
