In the beginning there was one idea…read more Gerhard Hummer was in England when Andrei Ivanovitch performed "Pictures at an Exhibition". For Gerhard Hummer who's friends with both pianists - who could not be more differnet - for ages, one thing was certain: These two had to meet each other. Many cross-country flights, overseas phone calls, emails and months later, all three knew that they were going to meet - here in Soßmar! The two musicians never met, they were never playing together and never ever tried anything similar. Andrei Ivanovitch - strict Orthodox, raised in Russia, classical music, classical composers, sheltered by the regime. Eyran Katsenelenbogen - raised in the jewish faith, grown up in America, modern music, modern composers, satiated by outside influences of every kind. For Eyran Katsenelenbogen it began with notes, now he only jammes in his easy-going nature, giving us some kind of leitmotif - an essence of what was once on the sheets. His fingers are sometimes drumming and sometimes fondling the claviature, his feet tapping the pedals - his eyes facing the point where once were his sheets. For Andrei Ivanovitch music is - from A to Z - made of notes. His eyes are fixed on the notes, every off-key stroke will be remarked. His fingers are gently flying over the keys, his feet are vibrating on the pedals as he glances on his fingers. The two of them have only one thing common: Their day starts with music, music accompanies them through their day, and their day ends with music. How could a concert work, where both of them play simoutaneously, or in turns interpret their pieces of music? Andrey already came to Soßmar on October 2nd. With visible impatience he passed his time - of course on the piano in the concert hall. When Eyran Katsenelenbogen turned up on October 3rd, the tauntness dissapeared and both felt sympathy for each other. Right from the start it was clear, that they will work together very well. As Andrei Ivanovitch says: "We come from comepletely opposite directions and are now working to meet in the middle. It's nice and we have a lot of fun." We had to explain to Eyran Katsenelenbogen that Soßmar's not a town but a mere village with 777 Inhabitants (as at January 1, 2007). Both were not only impressed, Eyran Katsenelenbogen was also amused - for one thing flashed into his mind: The view of a slot-machine in a casino showing "7-7-7"... According to Gerhard Hummer, both concerts in Soßmar are completely sold out - and so is the concert in the "Forum" in Peine on October 12th. But that's not the end - in the meantime, Mr. Hummer arranged for more concerts: - Wed, October 10th 20°° Bechstein Centrum; Hamburg; Europa Passage; Ballindamm 40; Tel.: 040-32129980 - Sat, October 13th 20°° Kanapee; Hanover; Edenstr. 1; Tel.: 0511-3481717 - Sun, October 14th 19°° Kanapee; Hanover; Edenstr. 1; Tel.: 0511-3481717 - Wed, October 17th 20°° St.Andreas Kirche; Seesen (Harz); Tel.: 05381-47474 oder -942920 - Thu, October 18th 20°° "Theater am Spalterhals"; Barsinghausen A real highlight will be the concert in Seesen, the acoustics of the time-honoured St. Andreas-Church will surely convince every sceptic that "two world class musicians have met and will offer us something extraordinaryl" Could that work?

I have returned to the…read moreland of the living for my family (and to write this review) but I want it noted that this is the scene of my first departure from this Earth. Honestly, I don't know if I'm used to everything being so expensive in San Francisco but I found this place to be incredibly inexpensive. I saw a concert and had a drink for less than €25. My import beer was €4. That is just insanely cheap. How are they making money? I nursed my one beer for fear of having to go to the bathroom and missing out on ANYTHING. I was upstairs in the beautiful but small concert area and wasn't about to lose my spot near the stage. And then the concert started and then I died. Surrounded by a bunch of sort-of-likeminded fans, it was a great place to feel like, "OMG. Can anyone actually survive from being this happy?!" By the nights end, some lovely gal finally convinced me to put my coat back on before going outside and probably actually freezing to death. Could I really freeze to death, though? When one is so overly blissed out from chatting with Matthew Mole, the best singer in the whole entire world, who is super entirely nice, and omg, so sweet, and wonderful, and amazing, and is so worth everything it took to get here... oh, my heart. How the Prinzebar was able to contain all of this is beyond me. The guy at the coat check counter was also super lovely. Great intimate venue, insanely cheap prices, and filled with tons of really amazing feelings. Swoon!

Sound was horrible throughout the night and the 40 minute intermission between warm-up band and main act was almost unbearable (I don't have anything against Johnny Cash, but 40 minutes of him straight through during the wait for an electro concert?). I'm not sure I'd want to come back here to see a concert. I was disappointed by the setup and the way the evening was logistically handled.

Warning: this is a punk dive bar. All positive comments should be taken in that context…read more I was sad when Skorbut got closed down, but now I've seen the new location, I think the move was in the best interests of all concerned. The old location is now occupied by the incredibly civilised Krug wine bar. This new location is about 3-4 times bigger and much more airy (it's not that airy). One of my favourite things about the place is the decoration. The walls and and ceiling are completely covered in multi-layered posters for everything from punk and metal bands through to sci-fi films like Terminator. The beers are cheap(ish) and entry is free. You can even find some real punks here. All-in-all, it's a bar to go for a few beers, play table football or watch some crazy underground punk band. It's not a bar to go dancing, watch football or have a date(!)

They have cool decorations and the place has a special feel to it. Lots of people and nice music. If you go there you should try the "Pfeffi" an Eastern German shot that tastes exactly like mouthwash - just a lot stronger. At least it is really cheap :-). I liked the place and will visit it again next time I am around. All the best and "Up the Punk" as it says on the entry sign !!!

I am from Chicago, IL in the US and I went on vacation to Hamburg, Germany…read more I went out with my friend to have a couple drinks and we saw this place. We went up to the bouncer to ask him what time this place closed and he was very unfriendly, unwelcoming, and acted like he was discriminative. The bouncer said something in German and literally pushed me to the side. I didn't say anything to offend him so I was surprised why he even pushed me - let alone touch me! I felt disrespected and belittled and so I called the police. The police officer that came was a woman who surprisingly did not take the time to ask me why I called them. She immediately spoke with the staff of this night club and they spoke in German. She then came towards me to grab my cell phone to delete any pictures which I took of the bouncer who disrespected me by pushing me. She then sought the help of the bouncer to come and grab me to help handcuff me. Why did she hand cuff me when I called the police?! I kept telling her I'm the one that called the police for help and she disregarded me and had a smirk on her face. She told me the bouncer speaks German and that he told her that I was threatening them that I would kill them. Who would believe that someone who goes on vacation and just wants to check out this place would be accused of threatening to kill them?! How ridiculous is that? I told her take me to the police station because I don't trust you and I need to talk to someone else. When we got to the police station, she said to me everything is okay we won't arrest you but you have to pay me 120 Euros. I told her I'm not paying anything because I didn't do anything wrong! I told her I need to call my US embassy and after speaking to the US embassy they let me go. I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE WHO VISITS HAMBURG, GERMANY! WHAT A GARBAGE PLACE! I have specific photos of those who treated me unfairly that work in this place in case anyone wants to know who these disrespectful people are! I really didn't want to select any stars but Yelp would not let me post this review without choosing even 1 star!!!

Grosse Freiheit 36 is where the mid-level to big bands often play in Hamburg. I was last here a few weeks ago to see Bon Iver, who were originally meant to be playing Knust (but I guess it sold out), they were then moved to Uebel & Garfarlich, and then finally to Grosse Freiheit 36 - this should give you an idea of the pecking order of some of the venues in Hamburg :) The place is pretty huge and on two levels - almost certainly an old theatre. There are bars everywhere, and while the alcohol choice isn't great, the prices are not so terrible (still expensive compared to a normal bar though). My only slight annoyance is that the toilets are annoyingly located just to one side of the stage, which if you're at the other side can mean quite a lot of pushing and "sorry" to get to.
