Tantivy Farm is one of those places…read more This magical place is one where you can walk through lavender fields, eat lavender ice cream, shop for lavender products, and meet some farm animals. It's a family-owned farm run by super nice people, and it's a great place to visit when you're in the Lexington area. You can explore more than a thousand lavender plants of 20 different varieties here. I visited during the off season, when the lavender bushes were spent and dormant, but there were a few sprigs here and there, and even so, the rest of the garden was lush and beautiful. If you want to experience the lavender fields in full bloom, you'll want to visit in late spring through summer. Around the end of May to the end of June is when they do U-pick lavender, where you can pick your own lavender bouquets. The owners also produce and sell lavender products, dried and fresh wreaths, lavender food (including lavender ice cream!). Friendly farm animals also live on the farm, and you might be able to meet and greet them. These are the most content and happy animals I've encountered maybe ever. Could it be because they live on a lavender farm and they're absorbing the calming vibes of this medicinal plant? Most likely it's because the owners are super awesome and treat the animals like family. It's great to see. The farm is open May to December.

Bellair Farm has a market-style CSA, which is great because that means you don't get pre-designated veggie choices each week but can instead choose whatever variety you want to fill your bag out of the week's offerings. It's a great value too because on top of your week's worth of veggies there are also pick your own fields that are open to all members to come out and pick green beans, sunflowers, tomatoes, and more to your heart's content! They hold events/workshops on the farm open to anyone, and the barn shop also has a selection of other curated, local goods like honey, maple syrup, jams, etc. that you can buy when visiting. The farm managers are both super friendly and knowledgeable and want to make your CSA/farm/event experience the best possible. They're at the Charlottesville city market every week as well as the Meade Park market on Wednesdays.

You can do a tasting of 8 of their wines and meads for $5, which is a great option if you have never been before. Hill Top is unique because it makes wines out of fruit, so you'll have wine here that you will never had anywhere else. I love their sweet melon wine, hunter's moon mead, and dragon's blood mead, among many others. Hill Top also has a great outdoor seating area where you can watch the goats and working dogs around the farm, with great views.

The setting was exceptional: perched beside the cidery with a pasture stretching out nearby, it had that perfect mix of open space and laid-back charm. For a first outing, I don't have much to compare it to, but it's hard to imagine a better start. Connectivity was surprisingly excellent--we were pulling 5G UW, which felt like a small miracle and made everything easier. The location couldn't have been more convenient, with trails, venues, and restaurants all close at hand. The cidery itself offered around two dozen options, and the Imperial Peach quickly became our go-to libation. And yes, they've got a happy hour at the cidery--and you already know that's my favorite time of day. Within three miles, you've got IGA, the ABC store, and Beltie's, while Devil's Backbone sits right across the street. The on-site BBQ Beast delivered exactly what you'd hope for--no surprises, just solid, satisfying fare. We lucked into something special during our stay, landing right in the middle of a migration path. One morning alone brought the sights and sounds of over 25 bird species--nature putting on a full show. All told, it's a fantastic place to boondock. We are not sad that we did. This place is amazing. The cider is top notch and the barbecue is spot on. Definitely try the ribs and if you're a collard green fan, they are pretty fantastic. They're not like the collard greens in the deep south, but they got game. The cider is very well done!!!
