I would hire DiamondStar Landscaping again, but I'd go in with realistic expectations.
We're not an easy client--my husband thinks like an architect, so every detail of our small yard (three distinct zones + a living bench) was planned to the inch over many months. Dario's idea for the layout was actually the spark we needed, and we appreciated that. He was the only company to suggest a living bench and the conceptual design.
Here's my balanced take:
1) Very fair pricing, no budget creep, and they were flexible with the payment schedule when we asked. That part was genuinely good.
2) Dario is calm, friendly, and clearly wanted the job.
Once materials were chosen, things moved along reasonably well.
3) Communication is their weakest area. Updates were sporadic, texts sometimes went unanswered for days, and there was one stretch (about 5-7 days) of complete silence after a payment that had us worried they'd walked off with our money.
They did come back and finish, but that radio silence was stressful and unnecessary.
4) Like most landscaping projects, the schedule flexed--some days the crew arrived late or not at all, other days they stayed late.
5) Demolition was quick; the build phase slowed after a crew change mid-project - I understand some changes were out of our control, but a little communication goes a long way sometimes.
6) A few design assumptions were made that didn't match our specs. Everything was corrected, but it meant my husband had to be on site a lot to keep things on track. (To be fair, their assumptions weren't bad--they just weren't what we'd spent months deciding.)
7) Dario is genuinely nice to deal with - he has a calming presence and has a friendly disposition - and the main worker (who did ~80 % of the job) was friendly, respectful, and great with our kids.
Diamond Star Landscapers is a smaller, younger company with real skill and heart, just not the slick communication or perfect consistency of a big established firm (that also costs an arm and a leg more).
Bottom line: We love how the yard turned out, the price was right, and the people are good humans. I'd hire them again, but next time I'd assume updates will be minimal, pad the timeline by a few weeks, and plan to stay involved on site.
If you're patient and okay with managing some of the details yourself, they're a solid choice. If you need some guidance on what to do or what materials to use at a certain cost, they'd be a fabulous fit for you.
If you need constant communication and a rigid schedule, they may not be the best fit.
