Was it just one of those things that screamed 1960s? Was it one of those peculiar instances where something seems so out of sorts? Spokane already is one of those cities that doesn't really have common sort to it so there's no making 100% sense of this. But today I had a chance to look more into it. This building just screams 1960s! Like every single aspect of it. The angles, the large, curved sign that's on top of the elevator shaft, the elevators which I think are original from the day it opened, to the awnings outside that connect to the skywalks. I mean really! They should film a movie here. Anyway I went in on a Sunday evening and even though the signs said it closed at 6:30, they said you could use your ticket to get in and pay after hours. It made me a bit nervous knowing that if no one was there, I wouldn't be able to get to my car. But more on that later. I parked on the top floor for fun and the top floor actually has a pretty good view! The ceiling goes very high so you don't feel very claustrophobic up there. There's views all around and everything is still screaming 1960s. The elevator ride down was jerky and quick. Definitely made in the time when elevators gave people motion sickness. I went and saw my movie down the street and as I returned after 830, I had my ticket in hand. I went back to the elevator door and the sign clearly said scan your ticket to gain entrance. I did and the door unlocked giving me access to the elevator bay. I went back up to my car, drove down the quick circular ramp that's sort of like an expressway down, and got to the end. I put my ticket in, followed with a credit card, and voila I was out! But wait! There was a gate blocking my way out to the street. No worries though, A sign indicates to drive up to it and it will magically open. And it did. The ramps are steep, the architecture is something out of a movie, and my experience was great. May they never tear this place down...

Rental car pickup and return are especially easy, making the arrival and departure process much less stressful. TSA can look pretty backed up because there isn't much room for the lines, but in our experience, it usually moves faster than it appears. The TSA agents have also been consistently friendly, which is a nice contrast to some larger airports. My biggest complaint is the food selection. There used to be a Quiznos, but now the options are more limited, with a gastropub, a juice bar, and a coffee shop. I'd personally rather have a simple fast-food option, especially when looking for something less sugary. There also isn't much seating near the gates, so when flights are busy, you may end up standing until boarding starts.

I can not tell you how much i appreciate this as someone who missed flights twice in my life and both were due to long rental car drop off processes. The whole airport follows a simple, straightforward flow--you basically move from one checkpoint to the next without much confusion. There is TSA PreCheck, although the process feels a little old-school. Instead of a clearly separated experience throughout, they hand you the classic blue card while you're in the TSA line to indicate PreCheck. Once through security, there's a small, circular food court with a few options, including coffee and a juice spot. From there, the airport continues with the same wonderfully simple layout, branching into two hallways for the A and B gates. Nothing fancy or overwhelming here--and that's exactly why I like it. Small, convenient, easy rental-car access, and you can get from one end to the other without wasting time. One of those airports that makes traveling just a little less stressful.

Or, go in the east entrance through a courtyard wedged between this building and the federal courthouse. Really cool area. Stunning early morning light. Epic architecture that shows off a level of grandeur and sophistication not typically associated with downtown Spokane.

Parking is costly at $4 for the first hour. Also, anywhere else in Spokane you can use the Passport Parking app to pay. Here, you have to download something different, called Flowbird. What were they thinking? Why would I download a whole new app just to park at this one stinking lot. On top of the $4 for the first hour fee, it's a non-sensical slap in the face having to use a different app to do it. Granted, I could get out of my car like a sucker and use the kiosk, but the whole move to parking payment apps is to make things easier and frictionless. Not adding another obnoxious layer of downloading another app, making a profile, adding payment information and so forth. My levels of incredulity are off the charts here. Lot 1, you are a shame to lots everywhere.

Came back to my car to find a ticket on my windshield with the exact same time stamp as my receipt for paying. Mind you, I saw the parking enforcer walking around, and I exchanged glances and smiles with him, and he WATCHED ME PARK. If he was paying attention to his job, he would have realized I was actively paying as he ticketed me and had only been there for less than a minute. My friend's work has had to have multiple discussions with you guys for ticketing them IN THEIR PAID PARKING SPACES. Teach your employees to do their fucking jobs, because now I have to dispute a ticket I shouldn't have even gotten in the first place. I hope someone sues you.
