The YWCA provide all sorts of support services for Adelaide women under thirty, and they are also responsible for administering the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a hugely successful program whereby volunteers spend one on one time with a child to give them positive mentoring and a good role model. YWCA are also responsible for advocacy campaigns for women against violence and domestic abuse, as well as support for positive body image, women's clubs, professional mentoring for young women... and a lot more. If you want to volunteer you can pick up the phone and a lovely, supportive YWCA staff member will take you through the whole process and become a great friend and mentor to you in the process. If you get involved with this organisation you will meet some very inspirational people in the process. Ahmaazing.

The service is easily accessible, however as it is a child care facility it is best to phone and make an appointment rather than just turn up. They run a variety of classes for women, and you may get thumped by one of the self defence practitioners if you suspiciously just appear at the door, which is security locked any way. Their class facilitation, website maintenance and database development, fund raising and events, are all looked after by community minded volunteers. Even things like OHS, maintenance, cleaning, finance, promotion and pretty much everything is maintained by the participation and support of its members. In fact the only person on staff is Michelle Tsutsulis Coordinating Director. Her role is to make sure the funding streams continue and her income is maintained along with all the important relationships between community and funding bodies. The service provided is obviously invaluable to the community providing women with child care facilities as well as a place to call their own when they need some kind of security in the world and have been unable to find it within their family or home.

Now if you are living here and you don't have a bike how would you feel if I told you there's one available to you during the day at FREE CITY BIKES? All you need is either a drivers license or a passport - and if you have not got either of those you need to get a proof of age card from the Department of Motor Transport. You are able to go in with your suitable ID and basically take out a bike in good working order, a helmet, because you can not legally ride a bike here without wearing a helmet, and you can go for a healthy bike ride along a decent bike track - how about that! The bicycle track network around the city is pretty good and there are so many places you can get to without really using all your energy, I couldn't encourage you more! You do not have to be a tourist to use this great initiative made available by the Adelaide City Council and Bikes SA. You can join Bikes SA if you would like to - just collect the details at the pick up spot next door to the Central Bus Station on Franklin Street. When I first got here, I wished someone had told me about this, because Adelaide really is a great city to bike around. Located just opposite the bus station on Grote street, you can catch a bus into the city or park in Chinatown before heading over and grabbing a bike. If you have friends who are new in town or you and some friends are out of ideas of what to do, get some bikes and cycle along the Torrens river until you reach the beach, which is roughly a 40 to 45 minute bike ride and very straight forward. Their bicycles are in good condition and they lend you helmets and locks as well so that you can park your bikes at a destination while you have a look around or head somewhere to grab a bite to eat. One of the best ways to experience Adelaide and to get some exercise as well. The last time I rented a bike from them, it was to show a friend who'd flown in for a few days quickly around town. It really is enjoyable, especially when you're someone who has come from a city where the roads are not bicycle friendly and the air is just rank with pollution. It is a nice change and Adelaide has some beautiful scenery which I take for granted way too often. When I'm thinking of a fun free way to spend the weekend on a day with good weather, I think of Bike SA.
