So we pointed to a few things that looked good and took a seat while they warmed it up and brought it over. I chose a stuffed baked bread thing with sesame seeds. It was amazingly delicious and completely not keto. My friend chose a fried chicken breast with some sauteed vegetables. Also delicious. With the beer, we had a super lunch that gave us the energy to continue exploring Palermo. A little bit of trouble with the credit card machine (yeah, no surprise there) and we were able to get past the language barrier just fine with pointing. While we were here, they got a big queue of folks for some sort of "loose meat" sandwich. I'd try that next time. [Review 12826 overall, 141 of 2020.]

It's delicious Sicilian specialties, plus pizza, which - see photos - you order and eat on the street. I was after some Panelle, chickpea fritters, which are on all the "must eat" lists. They had several items with it. I used the google camera translator and found one with mushrooms - funghi. Plus something with mozzarella and eggplant. Everything was so inexpensive - 2 or 3 euros, that I thought they'd be little tastes, like a $16 San Francisco appetizer. Wrong! Each was enough for a meal. Big sandwiches - see photos, 7 euros would easily feed two people. Tasty, authentic and quite a scene. PS On the way out I noticed a big pot of what I thought was a chocolate dessert. Wrong again! Spleen! In the last photo. I'm not partial to spleen, but it was very popular.

The First Restaurant Experience in Sicily Served Food & Some "Godfather History"…read more I ate at the main branch of restaurant that is known for being one of the first and, for many years, an establishment that stood up against the Mafia and Cosa Nostra. Antica Focacceria's two owners stood against the Mob by refusing to pay the 'pizzu', or protection money. According to Michelin Star Chef #giorgiolocatelli , the consequence is even in recent years, the owners were in exile. Now settled in a confidential place in mainland Italy, they fortuitously and successfully managed the expansion of this Sicilian restaurant all over Italy. Proudly supportive, I sat at the very first branch of the restaurant, the gutsy one that courageously said no to mob bullying, the original Antica Focacceria San Francesco . And I went twice, too. On my plate: panele, all sorts of arancine #supportlocal #sicilianfood #sicilianrestaurant #sicilyunpacked #curious_eater #andrewgrahamdixon #giorgiolocatelli #palermosicily

The sandwich here is served slightly different than other locations as the meat is sliced very thin and its topped with shredded cheese. At first we were a little nervous about trying the sandwich but after the first bite i was pleasantly surprised that the cheese really cut organ taste of the spleen. In addition the thinly sliced meat gave it a good balance between the meat to fat ratio. I know a lot of people in our food group were apprehensive about trying it but to be honest my wife and I are pretty open to all types of food and our motto is that will always try something once.

Busy with the locals is always a good sign. We had a coffee at the bar while we waited. Once we were seated we realized the place was a lot bigger than it appears from the street, with two levels of tsbledt. With 10 tables downstairs, it looked like Kati was flying solo, but doing a great job. We ordered 6 plates for four people and after ask that plus bread we were stuffed. Everyone agreed that this was the best meal and the best value of our week in the Centro Storico. I had the spaghetti Trapani with fresh tomatoes and almond. Simple and incredible. So good I finished the leftover sauce on sliced bread. Sal had the pasta pomadoro with eggplant and his review was that it was equally outstanding. Two happy vegans. The large mixed salad was a welcome intermission from this week's carb-fest. My veggie daughter had the same with pecorino and fresh mozz and gave it two thumbs up. The total for four people, six plates, two bottles of water and a conolo was only €44. Mamá mía, that's a good deal! My only regret was that we waited until the last day to eat here. Vegans and vegetarians, you're going to get your fill of pizza, pasta, and insalata this week. Make it good and eat here! I'll wrap this appropriately long review here so I can go walk this off before my daily gelato across the street.
