The sites were nicely kept. We were in site 21 and we could hear the waves crashing on the shore which was lovely. Be aware that there are many sites that require walk in to the tent pad. We have a roof top tent so we were super careful not to choose one of those. The only reason for 4 stars - when we checked in the ranger was adamant that we properly store our food because there are bears / raccoons. No issue for us. We understand the importance and always store all food items and toiletries in the locked car. The on-site dumpsters however, were overflowing with trash. read more

This was my first trip here and I had a great time. If you are looking for a fully amenity type camp ground this is not the place for you. It has running water and pit toilets. Some sites allow generator usage but only during the day. The whole camp ground is right on Lake Michigan and from the site I was at you could hear the waves which was relaxing. There's a short path down to the beach and when the moon isn't ruining it there are spectacular views of the stars and Milky Way. The heritage trail runs through the camp which adds a little to the foot traffic but it's not bad at all. The only thing you might want to try and check on before picking a site would be were it os relative to its parking spot. At the site I was at there was a small and short incline and after days of hiking and dune climbing it started to kick my butt. Other sites had no inline, some had longer and higher ones. Just something to be aware of. Overall it's a good camp, close to a lot of fun things to see and do, and it was a good price for me. It's also pet friendly as is the beach directly in front of it. The majority of the sites at the campground are nice and then there are a few sites that are right by the beach maybe sites 58-62, close to that range anyway that are sweet! I'm giving the 5 star rating because of the access to the beach. That's what makes this campground great. The beach is one of the best beaches there is. Great sand, great view, beautiful water color and not crowded, at least when I was there on an 80 degree Saturday in August. Highly recommended, I do usually a lot more remote, rustic camping but with the beach in the backyard of this campground, you can't go wrong! Yelpya later! read more

Amazing campground! Aside from the restrooms (outhouses) this place is a solid five stars. I've stayed here several times over the years in multiple different sites and have never had a bad time. Every site has a great deal of privacy, the camp as a whole is very quiet, and it's right on the beach in Sleeping Bear Bay. If you get here early enough in the morning you may be able to get one of the beach front sites which are possibly the best camp sites in the lower peninsula! Well worth getting up and waiting in line for. The beach here is large enough to stake out your own piece of real estate with a good deal of privacy and you can stay until your heart is content: NPS allows fires on the beach at this camp! It's a great location being a short drive to the dunes, Glen Arbor, and Leland. Give it a try and you'll fall in love! read more

This place is great. Yes, it can be difficult to get a site during the summer. We arrived at 7am on a Tuesday in July when it was raining and had tons of sites to choose from but every other day the park was full and people were lined up outside early in the am. It's just what you gotta do during the summer. You can always call the night before and ask how many sites they expect to have the next day. No, it wouldn't be the best place for a rowdy party. Campers were mostly families or people looking to relax and enjoy nature. There are no restrictions on alcohol and people definitely drink, but the vibe is chill. Sound does carry easily here so that is something to be aware of. There are vault toilets, they are not the most glamorous, but compared to some of the other vault toilets I've seen they are not bad (regularly cleaned, well designed for ventilation) and better than most porta-potties. It is rustic camping after all! I thought the campsites were lovely. Most have some greenery between you and your neighbors. Some are better than others, but walking around I only saw a few that I would have been unhappy with. The best part is the beautiful location. The campground is perfectly situated for exploring the area and right on Lake Michigan providing easy access to a lovely beach. They even allow beach fires. Everyone we encountered was very friendly and helpful, from the park rangers to the camp hosts. Rustic camping doesn't get much better than this. read more

We didn't spend the night here but we did spend a long afternoon splashing in Lake Michigan. I only ever visit Michigan in the winter for the Holidays and I must admit I was surprised to learn that it is a Summer Vacation Spot! It was so warm and the breeze off the lake was just perfect. Dogs are allowed on the beach as long as they are on a leash and you clean up after your pup. The kids had a really great time with my border collie who is a natural swimmer, they could not get enough of her splashing and rolling in the cool sand. Only fond memories of this place. read more

Not good for groups looking to have fun. Park rangers are rude and unprofessional, and the campsites are on top of each other.

Rolled up and missed out on the last tent site. That's fine, but had to wait in line to speak to a ranger to find this out. Meanwhile, another ranger just flipped the vacancy sign and said nothing to the group of people wondering what was going on. We were given a list of alternatives that were miles inland. Might as well camp in our backyard. A person got a campsite as we were leaving. What's up with that? Just sucky human-to-human interaction. Check out Barnes park. My wife and I took our 2 kids around Memorial Day 2012. We are avid campers, we camp rustic campgrounds approximately twice a year. First the good: This campground's location is fantastic, right on (quick walk) to Lake Michigan the beach is amazing. The campground has plenty of restrooms (out house buildings which are fairly clean), dumpsters for trash and lots of water sources scattered around. There are nice bike trails and the town nearby is very quaint. Now the bad: You are restricted in your tent locations to the designated pads each site has. These pads are approx 10'x20' in size and are level (which is good), however they are filled with hard packed road gravel. This can be easily remedied by simply bringing a pad or a air mattress, but there is certainly no sleeping on the ground. I highly recommend not paying for your entire stay up front but renewing every night for the next day if you want to stay because if you change your mind there are no refunds. The biggest problem I had with this campground is the Poison Ivy. Every campsite has a small area with a picnic table, a tent pad and a campfire ring. Other than that there is poison ivy everywhere, I mean everywhere, like a blanket on the ground. It was hanging over the tent pads, it was hanging over brushing your feet on every trail. Our kids had to either play on the road( yea, thats a good idea) or sit on the picnic table because it was impossible to keep them out of the poison ivy. Our dog would run through it then come and brush against us, balls would roll into it and then the kids would get it on there hands then touch there faces, trust me its a nightmare. After 3 days of this we wanted to leave but we paid for 5 nights and again... NO REFUNDs. I would not come back to this campground primarily because my family felt trapped and contained on our little space because the poison ivy. The "park rangers" love it because they dont want anybody going anywhere that is not a designated trail. So much for enjoying the great outdoors. Like my title says, it has such potential but too many problems especially for a family with kids who like to run and be adventurous. read more
