This review has been a long time coming. We've wanted to work with Courtney since 2019. Our dog has anxiety & noise sensitivity issues and we wanted to help her build confidence. I emailed Courtney back in October for a consultation. They responded quickly with dates and times, I booked a consultation in 11/8/2019. When it came time to our appointment, we had to be rescheduled multiple times due to whatever issue Courtney had. We didn't think much at the time, but this should've been a HUGE red flag. We ended up seeing her on 11/16/2019. Following that, we paid $310 for 4 packs of 30 min lessons on 12/16/2019. We scheduled 4 lessons around the end of January to February. We had to reschedule our lessons due to their dog passing away and health reason (totally unfortunate situation). However, in February, they said they would refund our money once Courtney recovered. We waited until March before we contacted them due to her health reason. Courtney responded via text message once on 03/6/2020 and they responded once through email on 04/5/2020 about how refunds are being worked on. They never responded again. We've emailed & texted multiple times. I really didn't want to write this bad review about a small business, but it's really unfair to take our money, not provide sessions, tell us they'll refund us, and then disappear when it comes time for refunds. All we wanted was for our dog is build confidence and now we're left with nothing. We have been waiting since February 2020 for our refund and it is currently August 2020. I have slowly come to terms that they scammed us, but I want to prevent this situation from happening to someone else. I would give Courtney 0 stars if I could. Please take your business elsewhere, there are other trainers who are more reliable all over the bay area. Don't make the same mistake we did. We first reached out to Courtney in 2017 for help getting our senior chihuahua more on track with housebreaking. Since then, Courtney has remained a consistent source of support in working with this highstrung but loving little guy, and most recently walked us through a pretty miraculous introduction between him and our newborn baby. Books the chihuahua is terrified of children and had barked and lunged at babies in the past, and I was so worried about bringing our daughter home to meet him and keeping them both safe and happy. Courtney coached us on how to prepare Books for having a baby in our pack, and gave us insight into how he might be feeling and thoughts he might have. When introduction day came, Courtney was there and walked us through the entire interaction. Books had some behaviors that worried me, but Courtney explained them and assured me they were normal. Before we knew it, he was licking baby's ears and feet! Thanks to that positive first encounter, he has accepted her as a pack member and wants to be near her all the time. He's still having anxiety about the change, and Courtney has been generous about texting with us and offering solutions that have worked (thundershirt and a lil' CBD tincture). I should also mention that Books was terrified of Courtney at first (as he is with most new people), and after training with her a few times, she became one of his favorite people and now he gets excited if he even sees her car in the neighborhood! Courtney was also very generous in advising a friend and I about a stray dog we rescued from a cemetery. The dog was terrified, and Courtney offered a lot of pro bono advice about separation anxiety and helping him relax, and eventually did a formal session with his foster mom. Courtney's help got him to relax enough to stay in a not-very-dog-friendly building until he was adopted. This review has been a long time coming. We've worked with Courtney for over a year with 3 different dogs, all with very different situations, and have absolutely been blown away by her. Our first dog was a senior that we wanted to brush up on some manners with and get a refresher on the best techniques to keep her happy and well-behaved. Courtney introduced us to some minnow treats that our girl, Sadie, went nuts over. Turns out you can teach can old dog new tricks! When Sadie passed away, we started looking for a new pup a few months later. We got our hearts set on a dog from the shelter, but after some adoption couseling with Courtney (and some tough conversations), we realized that wasn't the dog for us. It was a really emotional situation, but Courtney helped us to see it rationally and we ultimately made the best decision for that dog and us and we kept looking. Most recently, we adopted a 3 year old Australian shepherd mix and have had a couple sessions with Courtney. Mazzy came to us very shy, timid and she really needed to build up her confidence in herself and trust in us. We've been using all the techniques, toys, treats and positive reinforcement that Courtney taught us and Mazzy is like a different dog after only 2 months! She doesn't cower or hide from us. She comes to us now for comfort and is so much happier. We are so grateful to Courtney and Devoted Dog for being a part of our family! She really loves dogs and is so patient with us when we ask "dumb" questions. One tip, though - make your appointments as early as possible! Where do I start? Courtney has been an absolute savior in my journey of adopting my rescued pittie, Chase. Her deep knowledge of training, especially pitties, helped me and my partner effectively train through positive methods and was a total lifeline for me on the not-so-great-my-Dog-ate-my-remote-and-half-of-my-House days. She talked me through a number of options and ways to help both me and my pup cope with all the change, always making herself available. I waited to write this update because I wanted to think about how to respond to Devoted Dog's response. I had hoped that Devoted Dog Training would take this as a learning opportunity to improve their customer service, but unfortunately, they decided to waste their time in making up lies and trying to demote my character instead. While I'm disappointed, I'm not surprised due to how they have chosen to bully us through this entire experience. It's apparent how petty they are by saying that answering a couple of questions through text or email (we have emailed/texted 3-4 times during this period and 2 of those times were completely ignored) counts at paid training time to justify robbing us of a refund. One can only hope that they can reflect and perhaps someday learn to be better. Good luck to them. read more

I made the mistake of prepaying for services from Courtney at Devoted Dog Training, and like other posts on here she was not able to provide the services and suggested giving me a full refund. I was told I would be paid the $600 Courtney owed me promptly, which did not happen. Long story short she has kept leading me on for almost a year and I now am left to file a claim with small claims court in order to receive the $500 that I am owed. I bet Courtney is great with dogs, just not humans or business. If you don't intend on doing the work, don't accept the money and then spend it. It was an unfortunate experience and I highly recommend against working with Courtney and devoted dogs. My puppy and I had a very mediocre experience with puppy class/group training prior to working with Courtney. Trainers were generally unresponsive outside of class, and a lot of class time was wasted due to unruly students or bad planning. I wanted to work with a dog trainer who used positive reinforcement and had extensive experience with training puppies (my pup was only 4 months old at the time). I decided to go with Devoted Dog Training/Courtney after reading so many positive reviews. Over the course of 6 sessions, Courtney helped us work on leash walking, crate training, potty training, distraction proofing, separation anxiety, recall, and many other things I'm sure I've forgotten to mention. I really appreciated how she took the time to explain her techniques and to explain a dog's thought process whenever it exhibits "problem" behaviors. After every session, Courtney gave us additional training exercises to work on until the next session. She was also very responsive whenever I sent her questions. Courtney helped us build a foundation that set our puppy up for lifelong success. My experience with Courtney has been wonderful, and a real game changer for my dog. My dog is a rescue who is extremely anxious and fearful around new humans, but she has always been good around other dogs. After moving to a new house, her fear was causing her to start fights with my housemate's dog, so I decided that I needed the help of a professional to change her behavior and reduce her fear. I am so glad that I found Devoted Dog Training, because they have been exactly what my dog needed. Courtney has been extremely communicative and positive throughout the process. She has listened carefully to my concerns and tailors training sessions to my dog's needs and strengths. She really managed to coax my dog out of her shell and show her that training can be rewarding and fun. She's also extremely clear at explaining the science of canine behavior to me in a way that helps me understand exactly what the different elements of training mean to the dog at a cognitive level. This has helped me understand how to read my pet's body language better and respond to it appropriately. As a result, I find it much easier to teach my dog commands using books or videos, rather than needing the trainer to teach me each and every command. This means that I can use my training sessions to ask a lot of questions and have Courtney demonstrate more complicated concepts for me. As a brand new dog owner to a rescue dog, I knew I needed help with basic training (and soon, I realized, separation anxiety). Before we reached out to Courtney, our 2 year old pitbull mix had been showing increasing amounts of stress for several weeks, and we couldn't figure out why. Naturally wary of strangers (although very sweet and loving with friends), our pup would growl or bark at people more often than she used to, and even occasionally lunge. It wasn't until after our dog gave a good scare to a child on a scooter that we realized we needed a trainer to help us manage and understand. From the get-go Courtney was able to give us answers and insights to the onslaught of questions we had for her. Along with her many years of practical experience training dogs, she was also able to talk about some of the common understandings of how dogs' minds work and develop, and reasons they may react poorly in certain situations. It certainly helped us be more patient and less anxious when taking our dog out, which in turn reduced our dog's stress. Courtney's positive reinforcement training methods helped us build a stronger relationship with our pup, and our dog quickly learned to love every visit with Courtney. Now, our dog trusts us more to handle the situations she finds scary (instead of feeling a need to take care of it herself by barking), and we in turn know what signs to look out for if she's feeling uncomfortable so we can give her the distance she needs as soon as she needs it. On top of all this, Courtney's professionalism is amazing. She's communicative and patient even when we ask the same type of question multiple times. Courtney was amazing with our rescue dog! We rescued a sweet 7 month old pit from the shelter last March and realized she came with some separation anxiety. We went through the basic training that they offer for free at the shelter when you adopt a dog, but it didn't touch in this issue. When I'd leave her at home alone she would destroy the house. Like chew on our wood staircase or eat into our nice wood furniture. She destroyed speakers and pillows and my kids toys. She ate our plants and got into anything left out. Before leaving her I would have to completely close off all rooms and pull up anything that was a possible item she would eat. It was hard! I didn't want to crate train her so I called in Courtney to help! She was so amazing in just 4 sessions she was able to give me the tools to work on this issue and others (like jumping in people when they enter the house). With these tools and new game plan I was able to get her happy and excited to be outside in a closed in area made just for her. Courtney is the trainer you want if you want to see results! I've owned many dogs and have gone through many classes and trainers over the years; and Courtney by far has been the trainer I like the best. Her approach and explanation as to why we do certain training technique makes sense and works. My puppy has taken numerous group classes in our area, but Courtney can work specifically with you to address your dog's needs for home and outside environment. We worked on numerous behaviors such as counter surfing, leash pulling, reactive behaviors from other dogs barking, basic obedience, jumping, place, and I'm sure more stuff that I can't remember. We rescued a 7 y/o Chihuahua mix who was very easily overstimulated and reactive to people and dogs on walks. She is the first dog I've owned, and I was struggling to train her based on internet tips alone. We rescued our dog (1 y/o Pit mix) from a local shelter and knew from the beginning that he was sweet and smart but he was going to need a good amount of training. He is skittish, gets overstimulated easily and is leash reactive. From the beginning of our first meeting with Courtney, our dog took a liking to her and we were constantly learning. You can tell how much Courtney cares about these animals, understands them and is passionate about educating people and their dogs. She worked with us to identify what we wanted to get out of training and what some of our goals were for our dog's behavior. She asked all the right questions about his behavior both in the house and out on walks. She helped us understand his triggers, identify his nervous cues and ways to calm him with positive reinforcement. Each session with Courtney was professional but relaxed, sharing "wins" and "challenges" from the week, ways we could correct those challenges and addressing some of the goals that we'd identified at the beginning of training (we eventually worked up to long lead training and it was amazing!). We saw our dog do things we'd never imagine he'd be able to do and we've been able to continue this improved behavior with Courtney's teachings. We've received comments from the attendants at doggie daycare and even people on the street have commented on how well behaved our guy is! Courtney gave us the knowledge and the tools to understand our dog, how he is feeling, how to anticipate/avoid any potential situations and how to get results through positive reinforcement. Courtney has been working with my pitbull puppy since he was 8 weeks old, he's now close to 5 months and has a great foundation thanks to her! She has truly been amazing for us, I wanted to ensure my puppy would be obedient and well trained since I knew he would be much stronger than me. We contacted Courtney based on all the yelp reviews to work on our puppy's leash reactivity towards other dogs. An initial assessment was set up very quickly and Courtney is super responsive. We are currently 2 sessions in, and I will update later with more progress of the training. I am so glad we found Courtney! We had tried another trainer whose methods didn't really stick for our leash frustrated 3 year old rescue dog. Courtney did an amazing job of explaining what our dog is feeling and how to read his cues. We had such trouble with pulling and escalation, I cannot believe this gentler approach worked so well, but it did! Once we saw what to look for and what to do with it, it is like walking a different dog! I rarely, approximately never, go through the trouble of writing a review. However, this one feels particularly necessary as the experience truly saved my most prized relationship. When I moved to Oakland, I arrived with my 8 month old mini Aussie who was a wreck with the stress of the move and the weeks of road tripping getting here. I worked with Courtney for approximately 6 months. She educated me as much (or more) as she did my dog on behavioral issues plaguing us that were primarily to do with my pups insecurity. Courtney has helped me discern my dogs nervous system cues, and to apply the appropriate intervention at the appropriate time. This is life changing for a nervous dog and their owner, it certainly has been for us anyway. Courtney has a keen ability to read, interact, and teach a dog (and a human) - it's actually nothing short of wizardry. Both my dog and my Self have grown in working with her. We started off with basic behavioral issues and, in conquering those, have advanced to therapy dog requirements and agility mastery. One of the things I've appreciated most about working with Courtney is her heartfelt presence and effort in building the bridge between dog and human. She doesn't do this by way of denying all of the dog's impulses, but by teaching their humans to accurately perceive and understand them. This puts us, dog and human, in a fluid and rich relationship with one another. The relationship isn't based on the human holding the power through repressive control of their pet but rather on a mutual respect and understanding of each other. This may sound normal or simple, but promise, it's not. I know as people, that we fall deeply in love with our dogs. It is a certain type of relational stress that effects us when things are going awry with their training/behaviors. Courtney is able to empathetically support a person in this stress with grace and understanding, another thing that deeply endears her to me as a trainer and as a human being. We've been working with Courtney on scent lessons with our corgi. Our pup has an independent streak, but she gives Courtney her undivided attention! Best of all, Courtney always gives us a better understanding of what motivates our dog, how to keep her mentally engaged, and how we can have better dog-human communication. My husband and I adopted our first dog, Pippa, in May 2016, and we had a lot to learn! Courtney was wonderful. She successfully trained us (and Pippa) on positive reinforcement methods and helped us all adjust to life with each other. We originally worked with Courtney at the Zoom Room's group puppy classes in Walnut Creek and loved her approach and knowledge. She is now giving our five month black lab individual training and is fantastic. She genuinely cares about our dog and our dog loves her! She shows and has us practice the specific commands and approaches we need to use to address problem behaviors like leash pulling, jumping, mouthing and dog socializing.
